  1. I went for that location for the first and last time today. Felt like the wild west. As I walked in, a guy was walking out nonchalantly with a garbage bag full of stuff he'd stolen. Considering it was Dollar Tree, he probably made off with $9 worth of stuff.

The NHHIP will extend the NB feeder from its current terminus to join the current feeder on Hamilton, so it will dovetail with that work.

Correction: should be Chartres, not Hamilton

Oh no!!!!  The feeder will be shut down for SEVERAL WEEKS!!  How will we get through this nightmare?  (And does it actually have anything to do with the I-45 project?  I thought nothing was starting on that until later this year.)

I went to the meeting tonight and here's what I found out.

    • A 96 inch storm sewer line is being installed underneath the feeder from the 288/59 interchange to N. MacGregor with an output to Brays Bayou. The feeder will be closed in phases. The first phase will close the NB feeder between N. MacGregor and Binz. The second phase will close the feeder between Binz and Southmore. The final phase will close the feeder between Southmore and Cleburne. The entire feeder will not be closed during the project, and the N. MacGregor and Southmore exits from 288 NB will remain open during the entirety of this project. When the section between N. MacGregor and Binz will be closed, NB feeder traffic will detour westbound along N. MacGregor and north along Almeda to eastbound Binz to rejoin the NB feeder. The Binz exit will also be closed at that time and will be detoured to the N. MacGregor exit to follow the detour along Almeda. The entire project will be tentatively completed around Spring 2027.
    • This is not officially part of the NHHIP, but it's essentially getting ready for the additional drainage that's going to come with the new 288/59 interchange. Additionally, this project ends where the current terminus of the NB feeder is. The NHHIP will extend the NB feeder from its current terminus to join the current feeder on Hamilton, so it will dovetail with that work. The first mainlane construction of the NHHIP will be at the 288/59 multiplex, so that work will be starting when this project is finishing up, so in a way, it feels like preliminary work before the official NHHIP begins.

  4. I came across this flier. I've seen vaguely worded signs about road closures, lane closures, various surveying stakes, and a temporary asphalt driveway for HEB has been paved on N. MacGregor, but no info from Drive 288 or TXDOT. I'm going to try to go to the meeting. If they're expecting closures that long, I'm thinking they're reconstructing the entire intersection or replacing bridges?

Yup, this is exactly why they aren't completely capping it.

Even with the updates, it looks less and less likely that the San Jacinto extension will have an underpass at the railroad tracks. I really wish the city would bump up this extension on their list of Northside projects. N Main can't even handle the current traffic around UHD and having the San Jacinto extension would further connect us to downtown.... perhaps we'll have to do an at-grade extension at this point.

Are COH and TxDOT not on the same page? COH seems to still be anticipating a N. San Jacinto extension underneath the railroad and the future Providence feeder road as of April 2022.

I am making 3d models to replicate and document traffic signals of Houston. I really need help with this project, I do not have a lot of photos for references. Is there any chance that someone has allot of pictures (mainly from the 1950s - late 90s/2000s). I'm not into the newer signals that have been installed in the last decade, but I have rendered some. Roblox11_22_20231_58_33PM.png.bb7040d4d7338d809d988dd7b08160fa.pngRoblox11_22_20235_23_50PM.png.4f4a11e61b96f506e9b47fef5ae75596.png

I created a thread here around 2007-08 where I photographed some of the remaining signals from the '40s-'70s. You'll have to search deep for it.

  7. This isn't a real rate reduction. It's an EZ Tag discount. When I first heard about this rate reduction plan, they made it sound like it was an overall price reduction on HCTRA roads, not only limited to only EZ Tag users. In fact, they only said it would apply to drivers of two axle vehicles, and mentioned nothing about it being only for EZ Tag users. See https://communityimpact.com/houston/spring-klein/transportation/2023/02/02/harris-county-commissioners-authorize-10-toll-road-rate-reduction-free-ez-tag-program/ and https://communityimpact.com/houston/bay-area/transportation/2023/01/25/hctra-proposes-to-cut-toll-rates-by-10-offer-ez-tags-at-no-cost/

That sucks for those who have TxTags, NTTX tags, or out of state toll tags from Oklahoma or Kansas after over a decade of touting interoperability with other agency tags.

  8. What will ultimately replace the coffee pot building? I work at the county and some of my coworkers say a dog park is coming, but I doubt that. The Plan Downtown Report from 2017 recommends developing a North Downtown Transit Center at that location, but I haven't seen any concrete plans either way.

On top of what TXK said, this will become a spur (do we have an official name yet?).

I'm guessing it'll be an unsigned I-145 or Business Spur I-45

Interesting tidbit but unrelated to this, he mentioned that TXDOT is turning over ownership of Allen Parkway to the city. He seemed to think it could be turned in more Buffalo Bayou parkland if the city decides to go that way with it.

I thought COH owned Allen Parkway? I can't find it in TxDOT's files.

3101 would have been right on the corner w/Alabama.  Grace is 3111 (may have been part of the plot).

I don't remember this one but I never paid much attention to Chrysler products.  By the late 70s, in fact by 76 I think, that was a large import car dealership with several lines of upscale foreign cars as I remember.  Jag-you-are was among them.  An acquaintance was intown for a couple of days sometime in '76 and had to take his car in there before he could continue but I don't remember what he drove (other than it wasn't a Chrysler product).  MG?, Triumph?,

Was it Dominion Jaguar by '76?

I did not realize about 63 locations were still open.      Looks like about 1/2 will close.

The closures already occurred back in 2020-21. There's 32 locations left now.

I wonder if the downtown location will stay open. I understand it does good business.

The only Luby's downtown I'm aware of is the Luby's Etc. in the basement of the Civil Courthouse at 201 Caroline. It's only open from like 7am to 3pm M-F, and they serve smaller portions at concession prices. I'm not even sure it's under the Luby's umbrella since Luby's sold its Culinary Contract Services Business to Pappas in 2021.

you guys have it all backwards.

freeways are the blight that need to be hidden (along with the noise pollution). I just wish the other pollution (rubber, and particulate) could be so easily stopped with a wall.

people that live near a freeway have to suffer with the freeway any time they are home. you only have to suffer looking at their homes when you are a traveler on that freeway.

This thread went full Robert Moses so quick!

Plus, she'll get a nice federal pension.  Will she also get a pension from the city after serving as mayor?

She may get one already from being a former municipal judge and also District D Councilwoman in the late 80s and early 90s.

Majority of the movie is filmed in 3rd ward but the restaurant scene is chin McGregor Terrace on blodgett.

The restaurant scene was filmed at This Is It in 4th Ward at 239 W. Gray at Genesee in 1993. That building is now a doggie daycare (classic gentrification!). This Is It didn't move to the Blodgett location (former Family Cafe) until 2010.
