Memories Of Near Northside

The Near Northside was the only Houston location on Preservation Texas' Most Endangered List of 2005

Driving through this morning, I noticed 3 restored houses ( the first 3 pics below)that I hadn't noticed that last time I was there several months ago. This is encouraging. It's a lot like 6th Ward and hopefully will survive to some extent.

The other pics give an idea what the rest of the neighborhood looks like.

Nice pictures!

I believe the fourth photo is of the old Bergstrom Grocery store in the 2100 Block of Hardy St. Wouldn't this be one of the teardowns when they extend the Hardy Toll Road into downtown?

I make the trip down Hardy St. a few days a week when traffic is bad and have always liked that building.

Main St. seems to be lagging behind all others(i.e. Washington Ave., Houston Ave., W. Dallas, and many other major streets leading into downtown) in development. This side of North side still looks like it did 20 years ago with not much sign of life. What is up with that? Is it lonly a matter of time? Are developers waiting for the rail line to be completed before investing?

I can't see it staying like this forever. Eventually a TIRZ will get created and developers will take a chance on cheap land that folks will move over there. There are some amazing views of downtown from that area. Eventually there will be development there, when I have no idea.

Does anyone know if the building in the fourth pic is for sale?

I don't think there was a sign on it. The one across the street might be, I can't remember for sure though. It's another commercial building that is built from old concrete blocks that have textured fronts. Very early 20th century. And, as emil76 pointed out, the Hardy Toll Road people are hell bent on running the final leg through there and a lot of the structures along Hardy/Elysian would be terminated. Some preservationist groups have offered an alternative whereby Hardy/Elysian would be a beautifully landscaped "signature" boulevard but, at the public meeting I went to late last year, the representatives of the Toll Road smiled and carefully failed to present or mention that as an alternative.

Also, Trophy Property, there is a TIRZ already but it's "only" for 230 acres and I'm not sure what the boundaries are. We've discussed the area a few times at length in the past ( HAIF Topic - "Residents Say New Development Is A Threat, losing an identity?" and HAIF Topic - "Elysian Viaduct, Why an overpass?"" By the way, is the Hardy Place project dead? I can't find a thing less than a year old on the internet about it.

As for the toll road, those residents have very little organization so the Toll Road is likely to move forward as planned. However, with the new preservation ordinance, if any one of the buildings in the path of the toll road were to be declared protected, their plans would be altered. This is the true power of an ordinance like that.

Let's see, if each HAIF member kicked in $150, we could probably buy a couple of old buildings over there. ;)

Actually Danax, that last suggestion isnt a bad idea at all.

What exactly is going on in the Near Northside lately. There were several residential projects pending last I was through there, but thats on the far west side of it. Further east toward Jense and 59 is awfully downtrodden, but if you look at a satelite photo of it, there is soo much vacant land and unused property there, that coupled with its proximity just 5-15 blocks away from downtown should be prime for development, I'm not talking about just high end townhomes, but actual affordable middle income housing, where normal people too can buy and be happy with in a very close in area.

Any thoughts?

Does anyone have any old pictures of the N Main area? I keep searching online and there really doesn't seem to be much. Would really like to see how all this looked, especially without I-45 barreling through. Based on the old Google Earth imagery, even looks like there used to be some type of park in Little White Oak Bayou near White Oak Bayou.... I imagine a flood probably took that out. Was just wondering if anyone had any photos before the 80s or 70s...preferably the 40s and 50s but really anything would be great. Thanks!

Actually, I-45 took out a good chunk of Woodland Park (originally Lake Highland Park), which is what it sounds like you're describing.  It had a little lake and various attractions.

From Teh Googlz...

What! Wonder why that went away. Very cool... I knew about the name changes but didn't realize there was a lake like this there.
