Northwest coalition lobbies for UH campus

University is facing Sept. 1 deadline to buy 45-acre site

Several northwest Harris County community leaders met recently with higher education and elected officials to lobby for a University of Houston satellite campus in northwest Harris County.

The community group called a meeting July 31 to communicate community support for the UH campus proposal, said Glenn Wilkerson, pastor of Cypress Creek Christian Church and member of several community organizations.

Supporters

Organizations in that coalition include the Cypress Creek Cultural District, Cypress Creek Fine Arts Association, the 1960/Champions Improvement Corp., 1960 Area Community Alliance, the Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts and Community Enrichment and local school districts and chambers of commerce.

"We wanted to let University of Houston and state elected officials know how much we support this proposal," Wilkerson said. "We have several school districts in the area with one million kids that are underserved. We need a four-year university out here."

On the invitation list were University of Houston and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board officials as well as several state legislators who represent constituents in the primary area the sattelite campus would serve
