worldlyman
I’ve been in the Philippines with the Missus for the past month. It’s my second time there since 2001 but with the advent of decent digital cameras nowadays, sharing the pics is more convenient. These were taken with her Kodak Easy Share. Though my Filipino ancestry allowed me to blend in, many individuals out there still figured I was “Americano” due to some of the non-verbal cues when I didn’t open my mouth. Anyway, if you guys want more pictures later, let me know. I’m moving to Florida (from San Diego) over the weekend and I’ll be off-line for about a week or two. I’ll just start with these. Luzon Island, the northernmost area of the Philippines is the most developed. It’s got the culture, fashion and is home to the big cheese, Manila. It’s very modern, sort of like an anti-Tokyo, though. It’s got lots of grinding poverty to offset the opulence and modern settings. MANILA: Mall of Asia. This is the newest mall to be built, probably with ethnic Chinese money. And the picture doesn’t even do it justice. The malls in Manila and Cebu City actually are more diverse in design and energy compared to the typical cookie-cutter malls in America. The Houston Galleria, Horton Plaza and Mall of America represent diversity in the USA…but Manila has all that range and then some in one city. Skyline(s) of Manila. Makati City. This is the Uptown Galleria or Century City of Manila. But it’s got much more hustle and bustle. Typical street scenes across the Manila Metro, with the colorful jeepneys and tricycles. Nightlife. Neon. Las Vegas has nothing on this place when it comes to well-rounded nocturnal sin. Here’s Roxas Boulevard. On the waterside, it’s live music, food and strolling. Every night. The other side has good hotels (about 35 US bucks a night), casinos, great restaurants and…the infamous girlie bars. And a shot of a backstreet that has a nurse’s college…more attendant nocturnal entertainment like al fresco cafes. It’s a bit wobbly because I was over eager to snap the pic and then get in the cab. Heights2Bastrop
Is that what I think it is? Is that a Jitney? If so, it is the least colorful one I have ever seen! I spent 6 months off and on in the Philippines. Or should I say "in and out"? My ship was based in Subic Bay while it was on Wespac. The town there was Olongapo. It was said of Olongapo that if they ever wanted to give the world an enema, the syringe would go in Olongapo. I was not going to argue with that. The only time I saw any other part of the Philippines was en route to Manila on my way back to the States. The countryside was beautiful. I wish I had taken the time to see more of the area.
