torvald
today i went to see a friend and 2 family members at the veteran's memorial cemetery. when i got to the first grave marker, i noticed an egg laying on the ground next to it. there were no trees around at all and it was laying in the gravel next to the marker i came to see. i thought it was an abandoned bird egg and picked it up. as i was walking to the second grave, i saw a dried up snake in the drive that had been there quite a while. although the dead snake looked too small to be it's mother, i thought i may possibly have a snake egg. doing a quick search though, i don't think it is. it is definitely a real egg and has some weight to it. i hope i didn't take an egg away from it's mother, though as it was out in the open with no mom in sight, i doubt it. do you know what type of egg this is? it's about an 1.5 inches long. there seem to be two layers of spots going on and i'm not sure if the photo reflects that: http://static.flickr.com/69/155226674_4287a22ee9_m.jpg after doing a quick google image search for "bird egg spotted" it looks like anything from a spotted quail, to gulls and a few other things... torvald
i don't think it's a snake egg. a quick google search shows them as having a soft, leathery sort of skin and oblong. i felt bad once i got home but it was sitting on the dirt in front of my friend's headstone among the rocks (they're upgrading that section, see below) and without a nest and basically in the middle of a treeless field. maybe a snake initially took the egg and got interrupted, as it isn't cracked from a nestbound fall and it somehow got onto the middle of the field. wendyps
don't feel too bad. an egg left alone like that most likely would have been "ruined" already.
sevfiv
i wonder how you could tell how "old" the egg is. could it still be incubated?

torvald
building a quick little candler right now... http://www.minkhollow.ca/HatchingProgram/Candling/Fresh/ EDIT: so i made the simple one, cardboard with a hole in it and held it up to the light.there was nothing. no formed yolk at all, then it cracked and dripped all over my computer desk. i rinsed out the egg and i'm going to use it in an art thing. i don't know what i'd do with a damn baby seagull in the house anyway... other than clean up a bunch of bird poo everywhere.
