VicMan
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/3820076.htmlNew Orleans students did much worse on the TAKS than native Houston students. If they do not pass on the 2nd try, they will have to repeat the 5th grade. citykid09
I think when people rank Texas as the worst state for education there totally wrong. Just look at this, we can't possiblly be in last place.
YakuzaIce
If they do not pass on the 2nd try, they will have to repeat the 5th grade.Unless the article is wrong, it says they won't be held back until they fail the third time. And that is only if the parent doesn't appeal or if the committee doesn't vote to advance the student.

They will not easily advance the NO kids.
WesternGulf
That is sad but we have to put in consideration that the TAKS test just arrived in Texas last year plus it is a lot more difficult than the previous TAAS test that students were taken before. That explains the percentage of Texas students that passed the TAKS last year compared to the TAAS. Plus the graduating class of 2005 in Texas have been studying for the TAKS since they entered high school vs students who just arrived in the state 8 months ago. VicMan
Well, the TAAS was super-easy. But then the state started making the tests increasingly harder year by year...Even so, it demonstrates the failure of the school system in New Orleans, even with state differences taken into account. New Orleans schools did not teach many of the basics that the Texas schools taught. Edited April 27, 2006 by VicMan

Montrose1100
Our (texas) education system is alot "harder" for students. Even those who not only come from Louisiana (where it is a breeze to ace) but also students from around the world. I know a couple exchange students, so I'm not pulling this out of a hat. TJones
Yeah, having to repeat the 5th grade for the 3rd time just has to suck, not that I'd know or anything.
