Highrise Tower
Sometimes referred to Eleemosynary Institutions, I found the original, first, BakerRipley center! Known either as Settlement House, Houston Settlement Association, or Rusk Settlement. In 1907, Alice Graham Baker hosted a meeting of twelve influential, like-minded women to address the living conditions of families in Houston's Second Ward (today's East End). What grew out of that meeting was the Houston Settlement Association, which later became BakerRipley. https://bakerripley.org/about/our-story/ Rusk Settlement. 301 Gable Street. A Community Chest Agency. Visitors Welcome. Photo dated 1910: The City of Houston 1921 directory lists: Settlement House- 61 Gabel. Club house for use of the public, also kindergarten, dispensary, and day nursery. Under supervision of the Houston Social Service Bureau. Highrise Tower
The owner of the land was J.J. Settegast. He donated his mansion to the Rusk Settement. Originally, before the Settegast ownership, it was the residence of the Floeck family. Photograph from 1909:
