Getting Houston Wrong in the Media

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be interesting, fun, and/or maddening to share some examples where articles or reports discuss something in the area - with some element obviously incorrect about the locale, the people there or something that would just cause you to question what you just read as a result.

A fairly simple example from a recent CultureMap post on an a penthouse condo unit up for sale.

https://houston.culturemap.com/news/real-estate/5-9-million-houston-condo-for-sale/

The title: Posh and palatial Post Oak penthouse towers on market with a potentially historic $5.9 million asking price

"A monumental 26th floor penthouse with a mighty price tag in downtown H-Town has commanded the eyes and ears of our city’s highly active real estate market."

then adding...

"The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom condo spans across 9,503 square feet in the Astoria building at 1409 Post Oak Blvd."

Good old Post Oak, snaking its way through the heart of Downtown Houston...

Definitely following this thread closely.

The impact one word makes from a blurb about a restaurant opening...

https://communityimpact.com/houston/lake-houston-humble-kingwood/dining/2023/08/14/tex-mex-chain-fajita-petes-projects-early-2024-opening-for-humble-location/

"According to its website, Fajita Pete’s focuses on limited quality menu items that are available for catering, delivery, pickup and dining in."

The website says...

"Each new location sticks to our simple business model: Focus on limited, premium quality menu items that are available for delivery, dine-in, or pick-up."

YMMV if their premium is actually your limited, of course.

"4th Street Project: $1.97 million for the construction of a three-lane concrete curb and gutter collector street from Mons Avenue to Rice Street in Richmond"

I (having grown up not far from this proposal) and the County (probably wanting to spend the nearly $2M on a street extension in the correct city) disagree and argue this is Rosenberg.

An oldie but goodie... 2015.

Rosenberg area picked as site of technical college (chron.com)

"The new campus, which could break ground as early as June, would be located on 80 acres, north of Interstate 69 on FM 2218 at FM 359."

The frontage, in reality, is along the Southwest Freeway (59/I-69) between (not on) FM 2218 & Louise Street. If it were ON 2218, it would be where Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home & Cemetery are located.

Sincerely don't know how FM 359 even ended up in that description as it's several miles from this intersection and not even in the same city.

Recently I saw an article in an Indian newspaper about cricket in the United States, which identified Prairie View as a neighborhood of Houston.

The misleading identification may be prophetic. Weren't Sugar Land, Katy, League City, etc. once considered to be "out in the boonies?"  😀 In 1961, when my parents bought their home in Hidden Valley (then US 75 at FM 149, now Interstate 45 at SH 249) my grandmother made the comment "You may as well have moved to Conroe."

Bryan Kang’s Dos Lagos Asset Plans $40M Hotel-to-Resi in Houston (therealdeal.com)

"The Houston Housing Authority, in collaboration with Columbia Residential, is converting a dilapidated Holiday Inn at 2100 Memorial Drive, long an eyesore near Buffalo Bayou, into an affordable 197-unit senior living complex. "

Wasn't that conversion torn down in favor of a shorter, newer building? And was it an eyesore?

Houston’s Meow Wolf location hasn’t opened yet, but local artists are already at work contemplating their installations – Houston Public Media

Flyer for Meow Wolf's Houston location... Based on the star in the graphic, the city is now located somewhere west of Victoria and southeast of San Antonio. Kenedy or Floresville maybe?

Bringing Great Wolf Lodge to the what?

“Things are going really well on the construction side of things, and (we’re) just definitely excited to bring Great Wolf Lodge to the metroplex,” said Keith Furnas, general manager of Great Wolf Webster.

. I noted that too!   This guy must be new here.

Houston’s Luxury Condo Market is Growing (therealdeal.com)

"Pelican Builders developed the first ever residential highrise in Houston, The Woodway, in 1974."

2016 Main says hi.

2016 Main – 2016 Main Condominiums (2016mainhouston.com)

"Completed in 1964, 2016 Main Condominiums enjoys the distinction of being the first high-rise residential (living space/building) in Downtown Houston."

Lamar Tower also says yo. (1965)

That doesn't even count some of the apartment highrises like The River Oaks (Originally - 1962), the Conquistador (1964), Houston House (1966), and the Cabochon (1966).

May have missed some...

CultureMap/InnovationMap story from Friday reports on a study ranking the top tech cities in the US.  The headline:  "Houston Falls Behind Other Texas Cities In Report Ranking Best Tech Hubs".  First sentence:  " . . . Houston failed to crack the top 20 — unlike a few other Texas cities."

Total focus on the negative.  What is with Houston media (and Houstonians, in general)? One has to study the article and attached graphic pretty hard to discover that this report ranks Houston among the top 25 tech cities in the country (#22).

I can't imagine media in any other city reporting it this way.

Pickleball Country Club to open first facility in Houston - Houston Business Journal (bizjournals.com)

"A Houston-based partnership is getting ready to open a 31,000-square-foot pickleball club on the northwestern corner of the intersection of Interstate 69 and the Grand Parkway in southwest Houston."

The northwestern corner of the intersection mentioned is barely in Sugar Land. It's in a weird physical location where it's almost in Richmond's ETJ and zip code. It would be in both if it were on the other side of the access road that runs between the feeder from the Southwest Freeway and Ransom Road.

Unfortunately, that's not where the business is located.

The one mentioned is on Kinghurst Drive, just west of the Southwest Freeway & Beltway 8.
