We had to slowly butter up Houston to the fact that gambling is not such a "bad" thing. First we get the lottery, then the dog track, then the horse track, and gambling casinos just a stone's throw away in our neighboring state. Gotta love good ol' LOUSYANA !You want to revitalize Galveston ?, build a couple of floating "dens of decadence" right there on The Piers over by the Strand. Instant industry BOOM ! BTW. there is a Native American casino up in Livingston. It is shut down for now while lawmakers try to figure out how to get their slice of the pie. I think casinos in places like Cinco Ranch would be more appropriate than trashing up Galveston and MetroRail. That way all the exurbanites wouldn't have to shlep into Houston to catch their gambling busses to Lake Charles and the rest of us won't have to put up with a bunch of drunk-driving losers when they are dumped back off in Houston for their drive back to where ever land. The grim reality is most of the "gamblers" pooring over to Lousy-ana casinos are 65 to 75 yr. old retirees, blowing their retirement funds. OOOHHHH !, to live the American Dream. But hey, it's their money, they can do what they want with it, right ? I personally like to go over to Vegas or Lake Charles once in awhile. You can't take it with you, and you may very well lose a few bucks, but then again, winning enough to pay a little college tuition ain't half bad either. hokieone Posted September 27, 2005 Share Posted September 27, 2005 I used to think casinos in Houston was a good idea, but I'm not so sure anymore how it would work. Galveston seems like a good idea, but I really don't think I-45 can handle the traffic. Look how it gets now during the summer with the limited people just heading down to the area on weekends. Add in more people for the casinos and I think it would get even more tied up. Astrodome area, think of a Texans game day every weekend. A lot of traffic there too. Only place where it would seem to maybe work to me is a similar operation to the Harrah's in New Orleans where it is downtown and just one main place. At least downtown has multiple entry points. Still, I don't have a problem with the two hour drive to Lake Charles anyway. I agree, keep some of the not so great aspects far away.I don't agree with that anyone who gambles is dumb (seeing as how I like to gamble every so often and for entertainment purposes, definitely enjoy it, and don't consider myself dumb), but would hate to see the bum population increase anymore than it already is in downtown. I think they have some serious deed restrictions enforced there. If they would put one in Galveston as they say that Galveston's whole island can be over flown at any hurricane especailly as 80% of people left from Rita. They shpuld build it in the upper part 20 miles of the County of Galveston among I-45 Between the limits of Houston and Galveston. And more importantly, the cruise ships. People underestimated the power of Houston with the cruise ships, but now, all the cruise ship lines are coming to Houston because they basically have a built in customer base of 6 million people.
