Faux Bois Overpass, I-69 Over FM 1485

I'm accustomed to seeing faux bois concrete construction along San Antonio's Riverwalk ( www.flickr.com/photos/32345848@N07/8997045573 and www.flickr.com/photos/32345848@N07/9005783615 ) and at Hidalgo Park ( www.flickr.com/photos/32345848@N07/8465713091 ) in Houston's Eastend, but I wasn't at all expecting widening of the highway overpass at New Caney to result in some interesting faux bois.

It makes since, though, doesn't it? US Highway 59, now Interstate 69, is the main route from Houston into the heart of the Piney Woods, passing through many of the pine forests that helped the timber industry and railroads dominate East Texas for generations.

All new construction north of I-10 and US 290 in the Houston District has been receiving this treatment since around 2003-04. It's part of TxDOT's Green Ribbon Program. This design is called the Vertical Scheme.
