NEW YORK - To Donald Trump, the proposals for the replacement for the World Trade Center look like a junkyard. His solution? Rebuild the twin towers, more or less.

The towers he advocates would be 111 stories tall

Very bold of Trump to propose this, but I think he has a valid argument. I say the best thing to do is rebuild them. I have been thinking about this alot...I wonder what people would say if the White House had been hit..would we rebuild it like before? What about Mt. Rushmore? Washington Monument? What does everyone else think about this?

Check out this recent NY Post article:

May 20, 2005 -- Donald Trump is a caricature of himself, and his arrogance is obnoxious ("Egghead in Trump's Face," May 18).

But I want him in charge of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center.

Period. End of story.

On the one hand, we have a showman with an enormous ego, but an even more enormous love of New York City. On the other, we have a childish egghead, who has drafted a horrid blueprint for an embarrassingly ugly building. It's not a tough choice. After years of ridiculous infighting and inertia, I can think of no better person to lead this effort.

I'm on Trump's team, because someone who really loves New York has an innate knowledge of what is best for New York. - Terrence Lavin, Manhattan

The Post is to be commended for keeping this issue in the spotlight. Most of the rest of the media, including The New York Times, chooses to ignore it or chastise anyone who dares advocate the return of the Twin Towers. - Boris Docevski, Manhattan

Building anything but the Twin Towers will be a trophy to the people that knocked them down. Rebuilding the Twin Towers is truly the way to restore American Pride. - Vincent Coscia, Staten Island

I don't think the WTC is/was on the same level as teh White House, Mt. Rushmore, etc. Forone thing, they were built in the '70s for commercial reasons, and second, they are/were extremely ugly.

So where was Trump 3 years ago when they were making plans for the new site?

Exactly. Where was mister "You're Fired" in 2001 when his voice would have mattered? Oh, yes, dealing with his bankrupt casino empire. Now that he's trying to reinvent himself as "Mister New York" and needs to get his face out there because ratings for "The Apprentice" have tanked, he cares.

He's a showman, and all this is just about getting more face time for himself.

I think the strongest statement would be to rebuild them. Trump's idea to add one story is his way to draw publicity, as Editor noted above. However, this is a rare case where I have to agree with Mr. "Comb-Over".

That freedom tower concept is weak. As for the towers being ugly, thats simply a matter of opinion. You can not deny that the New York skyline will forever be changed without though.

The thought that the towers were outdated? I disagree. They withstood more impact, heat, and sheer destructive torque than any other high-rise structure in any city here in the United States, including Houston, would have been able to withstand.

Rebuild them both.. and while we're at it, a wall for our borders would be nice too.

I think that the stalemate which has delayed the construction of the Freedom Tower is the best thing that could have happened. Better to take a little time and get some perspective on the events of September 11th before rushing into a design that's supposed to be all things to all people.

The current design is just flat-out horrible. If a building could have the rickets, it would look like the proposed Freedom Tower. A twisted tombstone with office suites; a skeletal tribute. And the idea that we should replicate that which has been lost smacks of denial. To build something even taller there, as Mr. Trump suggests, we might as well include a giant "KICK ME" sign on it. We shouldn't let spite determine the shape of our buildings.

Some people have pleaded to leave the site undeveloped, as was done in Oklahoma City. But this is Lower Manhattan, not the Midwest. This is a hole which needs to be filled, both literally and figuratively.

As I mentioned on the previous incarnation of HAIF, I lost a cousin in the South Tower. No memorial, however grand, will bring him back; nor so small will allow him to be forgotten. Surely, respect should be paid to those who lost their lives. Just as importantly, respect should be paid to those who continue to live in NYC.

While I wouldn't choose Mr. Trump to be the developer, I think the highest bidder should redevelop the property in whatever manner he or she deems most profitable, and to hell with what anybody says. Isn't that what made New York a great city to begin with? Isn't the survival of the city the greatest tribute of all?

Westguy, you hit the nail on the head. The common answer from New Yorkers seems to be rebuild the towers. Metaphorically, I think it would best show us getting up after getting knocked to the ground.

The freedom tower just seems weak, like we're getting up and turning the other cheek. And as an American, I sure don't like that mentality.

Oh yeah.. lets build that wall too.

Well, New Yorkers hated the original ones when they were first built. And most of the New Yorkers I know don't want them rebuilt exactly the same.

Not to mention they'd have trouble finding people to lease space in it. Manhattan has a glut of office space these days.

I think that for all of Trump's faults, this is his best idea EVER. Just that extra floor would be the middle finger NY deserves to give to the Muslim extremists that want all infidels dead.

I LOVE IT!

I think if they aren't going to do that, then leave the space as is. Nothing was more somber and humbling than going to see the empty space where they stood just 6 months after they fell. :( I kept looking for the Nathan's I used to go to all the time right across the street and realized it was gone, too, much to my horror.
