WillowBend56
Sure wish Austin had preserved one or both depots that once sat diagonally across Congress Ave. from one another. International And Great Northern Railroad (I&GN) depot (for Missouri Pacific (MP) trains) was a solid stone structure that had an imposing turret attached. It was last used around 1948 before the current (Amtrak ) depot was built for Missouri Pacific trains. I&GN postcard view: http://www.austinpostcard.com/cgi-bin/view...?card=railroad1 Houston And Texas Central Railway (H&TC) depot (for Southern Pacific (SP) and Katy trains) was a solid two-story stone edifice. The latter was demolished in the 1960s. H&TC postcard view (notice the base of a moon tower in the postcard view): http://www.austinpostcard.com/cgi-bin/view...?card=railroad2 Carmelo's Restaurant in East Austin is supposedly an even older depot antedating the two I just mentioned. Saddleman
Cool stuff. Just one thing, Carmelo's is downtown next to the Hilton, not East Austin. :-)
WillowBend56
Here's a link to a photo of the old Missouri Pacific depot in Austin shortly before it was replaced by the newer one (now the Amtrak depot) circa 1948:http://texashistory.unt.edu/permalink/meta-pth-34153:1The caption is incorrect. Pictured is the old IGN/MP station with some modernizations.
