Below is picture of my Grandfather "lou Turbeville". I'm told he was 3 time Southwest Champion racing in the 40's and 50's. Raced against Doc Cossey, AJ Foyt Sr. My Father at one time had several pics of him and AJ as kids in the pits.

Great topic apoftexas. You might also want to post in http://txsz.com/forums/. You would most likely get "quality" replies and feedback there. I look forward to seeing more from you on your local racing history.

You haven't been active on HAIF in 13-years but I found some information about your grandfather.

autoracingrecords.com indicates the race track was called Houston Speed Bowl located at 2001 San Bernard St. (later Cullen), across from Buffalo Stadium. Alternative names of the race track are Midget Auto Speedway, Houston Speedway, and Speed Bowl. A book published in 1942 titled "Houston, a history and guide" says the name and address was Midget Auto Speedway located at Calhoun Ave. and St. Bernard St. I believe autoracingrecords.com has more accurate information as they have auto racing records from all over the world and that's solely what they focus on.

Houston Speed Bowl was in operation from 10/31/1937 to 07/30/1942. The track was designed as a 1/5 mile dirt oval race track.

Your grandfather, Lou Turbeville, raced on the following dates and in the category of TORA midgets.

1939-09-21

1940-08-08

1940-10-03

1941-05-01

1941-05-22

1941-06-05

1942-04-02
