infinite_jim
I was out and about last night and in search of a parking space when I noticed that the residences along California street have no drive ways. This is the area around Winsor and Yupon where the patch of shifted grid (pre-war/pre-A/C breeze configuration?) creates that dynamic bend on Westheimer. Any info on the platting of the is part of town would be appreciated.

sevfiv
Yep - the block book maps show the alley (the scans are west-up, though):http://books.tax.hctx.net/v038/AE1997_37-38_0563.jpghttp://books.tax.hctx.net/v038/AE1997_37-38_0565.jpg
brucesw
The 1700 block of California has driveways, at least on the south side of the street.
sevfiv
True - that's the triangle-y part, right?http://books.tax.hctx.net/v038/AE1997_37-38_0564.jpg
Fringe
There's a section of Southampton like that.
infinite_jim
When and why was this area of Houston platted like the downtown grid? Was it a separate distinct neighborhood before the 1910's when Montrose was developed?edit: thanks for the block book maps

I guess with the tapered rectilinearliness (?), there wasn't room for an alley between California and Westheimer. It's the block with Da Marco on the west end, where Los Troncos used to be.
