Fringe
One of the problems is all the small utility companies that come and go. I was in 3 different utility companies that all went bankrupt. Went back to Reliant just because I was tired of having to choose a new company every 6 months.
RedScare
The Legislature passed a sweeping deregulation law in 1999 that sought to break down electric company monopolies and remove strict government control over retail electricity rates. The idea was to allow competitive market forces to drive down prices. The sponsor of the legislation, former Sen. David Sibley, acknowledges rates have gone up but said he still considers the bill a success.Sibley, who now lobbies for power companies and others, blames the hikes on increased natural gas prices. He said Texas is far too dependent on natural gas and would see lower rates if it diversified to coal, nuclear and other energy sources.

travelguy_73
Crap. I locked in a 2 year rate of 14.2 last spring with Reliant. Seemed like a good rate at the time. It would cost me $295 to cancel.Depending on your usage, paying the cancellation fee might be worth it. If you typically renew during peak pricing times, you will always be paying more than if you are able to renew during this time of year. It might take you a couple of years to recoup the cancellation fee, but then you would benefit from there on out.
BryanS
...I still can't get over all this cell-phone like talk of "locking in rates" and "cancellation fees" and "2 year contracts" and on and on. Why can't we just pay the power company and not have to worry about all this other non-sense? Like we used to. And it was way cheaper.

How can you hate on competition? You must hate America!!! One power company, Jeez! America- hating socialist!

America- hating socialist! ...yes... and here would be an excellent name for it: Houston Lighting and Power. No "Minute Maid" in the name, no "contracts," no "power plans." Just simple, affordable electricity. That's all.

rsb320
I need advise regarding my power usage and meter operation. My first bill for January was for 20 kWh @ 11.75. I thought, awesome, but I hadn't used much climate control during this period. February was 10 kWh @ 11.70. Then, yesterday, I got my March bill - 0 kWh @ who knows what! They charged me for not using any power, so my bill was about the same as the other two months. All three readings were 'Actual' meaning someone actually read it.I went to the meter and the readings were correct. I noticed that the wheel was not spinning, so I turned on the stove, oven and A/C. It appeared to move a bit, but when I went to check it again, it appeared to have gone backwards. I'll continue to monitor it closely.Anyway, my question is how should I proceed? I don't want to get slammed with lump charges later. If I can get the meter to spin at 10-30 kWh a month, I'll be totally fine with that, but zero usage is going to send a big red flag to them.
