Hunter's Creek. HCAD says this one was built in 1958, and I believe the original owner was a man named Lomis Slaughter, Jr., an engineer and sculpter in his retirement years. I'd never seen it before and have no idea who the architect is.

The house reminds me of one of Craig Ellwood's houses.

That sales price (however recent) is actually kind of a bargain for that area. Looks like the second owner "granitized" the house a bit, but just keeping it standing says a lot.

That last sales price is way below lot value today.

Hcad has the land valued over a million and the house at 7,800.

Wow - the house is way underappraised - and the current owners pay VERY little taxes.

Slaughter has an endowed scholarship for sculpture in his name at UT Austin, and also helped with the Charles Schorre Project (http://houstonartistsfund.org/charles_schoore.html)

He died February 15, 2000

Stephen Fox tells me this house is by Neuhaus & Taylor, designed in 1958 for Mr. Slaughter.

I'm glad you posted this, I wasn't aware of the place. As you mention, Ben, it does have a bit of an Ellwood vibe to it, and also looks like someof the 1970's work of Buff and Hensman in Los Angeles, as well as some of Richard Meier's earlier work in The Hamptons, NY.

With that address, it's likely a goner. Kuhlman Road has gone McMansion CRAZY over the last 4-5 years, especially right off of Memorial Dr.

Don't be so sure...the lot probably won't support it. It's a very small space on a one-lane road with homemade speedbumps.

852 Kuhlman was built by Marcia and Lomis Slaughter, Jr. The architects were Niehaus Taylor and it was first occupied 12/24/57. The Slaughters lived there until their deaths and it was sold in 2002. It has been modified by the current owners as it was orginally a "bridge house" with ramps which spanned the intermittent stream bed and which met at the platform at the front doors. It was silver weathered redwood with stark white I-bean columns. The entire back wall (the reverse of the view in the photo, was glass. We likened it to a match box on toothpick sticks and loved to play in the shade underneath during summer months.

This is my grandfather's house. He was in fact Lomis Slaughter, and they lived there until his death in 2001. We were in Houston a year ago and the house was still standing. The new owners changed a lot of things in the house but the general structure of the house is still the same. I've always wondered if they kept the fire place though. The fireplace was an airplane wing. One of the coolest things I'd ever seen.

Anyways, I thought i would write in. If you're seriously interested, I can track down some information on the house via my aunts who would know much more than I would.

Do you happen to know when was the house built? Unfortunately it wasn't included in Houston Mod's book on Neuhaus & Taylor, so there's not much information out there about it.

There's a road. It's a small, one lane private drive at the end of Kuhlman on the left side of the cul-de-sac. There's no room to turn around on that road, so you'll have to use a driveway.

I am the current owner of this house and yes, we are looking for buyers.  We just took it off the market due to having various visitors for the holidays, but we will be putting it back up on the market at the beginning of next year.  We absolutely LOVE our home, but are looking to retire on the west coast.  We've been the owner for the past 11 years and have not changed anything inside.  I really wish I could've seen the airplane wing fireplace, but that was not there when we purchased the home.  We still have one of the original sculptures outside our home.  Unfortunately, the previous owner gave a neighbor one of the other sculptures.  

 

As the BenH posted, the road to the home is a small, one lane private driveway that leads to 4 homes (ours being 2nd to last).  However, we've never had an issue with this and actually love the secluded feel of the home.  Memorial Village police also makes a point to drive in (as part of their neighborhood patrol watch) and turns around on our mini driveway couple of times a week.

I'd love to have this house and keep it as close to original as possible. Unfortunatley it's about $900k out of my price range.
