  1. City Auditorium was torn down to build Jones Hall.

fun trivia.... City Auditorium is where Johnny Ace "committed suicide" by supposedly playing Russian Roulette with Big Mama Thornton standing nearby.

    Cardi's

Saw the Outfield there in '86 which was an all-ages show but the drinking age was still 18 at the time so when the show was over apparently my buddy & I looked 18 & they didn't hassle us to leave with the the other kids.

I was working at Cardi's at the time. In between the time we booked The Outfield and they played there, their video hit MTV. We booked them for a second show, which sold out immediately. One weird thing, the two shows were 8 days apart.

Part of my job that day was making sure their blind keyboard player Reg didn't fall off the loading dock behind the club.

Cardi's shut down 37 years ago today. I still miss the place.

  3. that's the neighborhood where I grew up. The grassy area to the left of it is a retention pond for that formerly swampy area (there are pipes underground there, they installed this stuff in 1980 ish. They go north next to my old friend Patty's house, then between the old back pool and at the cutest girl in the neighborhood's house, it makes a 45 degree turn, and into the bayou)
We used to do "acceleration tests" late at night on huntington venture.... get to 20 mph, punch it at the first street light, them slam on the brakes after the second one on the right. My old T-Bone would get to 70, my brother's car got to 72... I never did it in my old Barracuda, I was smart enough to know that it would never stop in time at the next intersection... .

The building is still there only it has been Number's Nightclub for over 25 years. I always thought that Million dollar dump was for a crowd comfortable with the Montrose area? Wonder why in the world Cheech & Chong would be there? Unless they were totally amiss to the surroundings? Oh well could have been the bong...

Maybe this thread should be moved to Neighborhoods in Houston-Montrose? just a suggestion?

Cheech And Chong were there because it was a venue they were booked to play after their preferred venue, Liberty Hall, closed it's doors.

  5. I'm on the exact opposite of the political spectrum as Whitmire, but I'll tell you that electing him can be one of the best moves Houston can make in a long time. He's well connected with the regular people of Houston and is a damned good administrator. If you ask him to, he will hold that dumb bolshevik (rhymes with witch)'s feet to the fire and get that big ditch dug near the jailhouse.

FWIW, if the bus is running on (or ahead of) schedule, there is no reason for it to not wait for the red light.  To the contrary, there is every reason for it to wait, so as to not get ahead of schedule and bunched up.

the only thing worse than a bus running late is a bus that is ahead of schedule

The lack of "bayoufront' development was a huge missed opportunity regarding the growth of Houston through the years. So I'm definitely looking forward to this project (and any precedent it sets).

they tried that about 100 years ago. Those buildings sank into the swamp. Then they rebuilt them. Those buildings sank into the swamp. Then they tried again. those buildings burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.

But the fourth set..... that's what you see here.  :)
