  1. i went with two friends. after hearing about the film a couple of times on this board, i'm really glad i finally got to see it. long, yes, but very interesting.

there was an older (50's - 60's, i'd guess) couple sitting on my right side - the female was black & the male was white. when the older white lady in the film was telling the story about how they wanted to buy in river oaks but didn't ever have their calls returned, and she said that they heard from others that it was because they were jewish - the lady next to me said "hmph .. duh!"

the father that broke down crying when telling the story about his daughter wanting to bring her friend home happened right before the little 'break' in the film, correct? when the projectionist had to spool the next reel, or fix it, or whatever - there was a minute or so of nothing before it started back up. that probably intensified the effect of his story. i just saw it as some sort of catharsis, too. feelings that were probably pent up for a very long time.

the couple that ruled the roost from the living room of the house they'd designed ... from what i could see of it in the film, that's a gorgeous house!

niche & sev - did you guys sit in maybe the 2nd row down? we were upper left, too, and i remember a male & female coming in just before everything started. we were in the very back row and i think you guys may have sat just in front & to the right of us.

  2. Yes, and it was very well known... especially for its vast array of unique/rare fish. The name fails me now?

They were there for a long time as you say, since early 60's up until about 1989ish? Surely someone can recall a business thats been around that long, unless it swapped names over the years. Very possible.

What I really do remember is this area was considered a very desirable and safe place to shop, eat out, etc. Its still not that bad...

When I was in high school in the 80's, I used to buy fish from a place over there in Windsor Plaza (at least that's what I always called it) and I could have sworn it was just called ... Dave's Tropical Fish ?!

  3. Grew up in Bellaire. Gordon Elementary to Bellaire High School. Lived here my whole life save for a couple of years in Austin. I didn't appreciate most of the nice things about Bellaire when I was younger, but of course that came with age. Most of the time, we'd like to stay, but I don't know how much longer we actually will. We'll eventually get run out (at least it feels that way sometimes), or we'll just leave because we're sick of being bugged about whether or not our house is for sale. We get letters in the mail, notes on the door, they knock on the door, they cruise the streets & catch you as you get home, etc. It does start to grate after a while.

  4. got out my old ticket stubs & the ones i could find that i didn't see mentioned so far: the cure, metallica, sting, morrissey, the cult, lenny kravitz (opening for the cult), and depeche mode.

i was trying to remember some of the opening acts here ... flock of seagulls opened for the go-go's, i think. didn't asia just have a juggler or something? i think that was my first 'real' summit concert - 1982! ub40 opened for the police, omd for the thompson twins, and i don't remember about bowie (87) and/or the cult (90). also went to a lot of the others mentioned already in this thread. nin, run dmc/beastie boys, u2, etc.

WAY up thread, i cracked up about leif garrett. i was also crazy about him. my brother took me to see him somewhere - it says astrodome up top, but i thought it was just the arena or something? it seemed small to me, and i was small myself back then!

  5. I'm going to try. Unfortunately I didn't dress for a party to work today. But I'll try to go anyway.

    Shannon

Ack! We never dress for a party to work over here, but my husband & I are really hoping to attend tonight. Honestly, we very rarely dress for a party, ever. Hope we won't get kicked out of Houston Mod for being the resident bums! ;)

  6. You guys are killing me! :P That house on the corner was my favorite for a long time, too. After they painted the brick white, though, I just wanted to cry. I think it got a new owner sometime post-Allison and that's when the white made it's appearance. Still a beautiful house, though.

    Jersey01,

The white brick house on the corner is one of my wife's favorites in all of Houston. I agree with your point the lack of privacy, but it seems to not bother whoever lives there. Funny thing, I've never seen a person inside whenever I've driven by it, which is quite a bit, so they must have a place to hide in there somewhere!

  7. That big hill at 610/59 was definitely a waterslide at one point. My brother's girlfriend (at the time) worked there, so I'd rike my bike over & she'd let me ride for free. I was trying really hard to remember when that was, but I know that I was either nearly out of elementary or just starting junior high - so that would put it around '80-'82 ?

  8. My husband & I went and looked at this house today. We both really liked it. The only other con that was obvious to us (that Jason hadn't already mentioned) was that it definitely needs a new roof. We thought it looked like it was about that time, and the seller's disclosure thing does say it was new in May '79. So, yeah. Don't have enough knowledge to know about the foundation, etc. It all looks good, but I'm certainly no expert.

I agree with the courtyard in front, the entryway tile, & that living room all being huge pluses. I LOVE that formica in the kitchen. We also loved the pocket doors everywhere. It's got much more storage that we currently have, and all but one of the bedrooms are larger than our largest here, so how could we not love that?

Of course we also did the obligatory 'drive by & look' at the 3 Jenkins' - including your house, Jason, and from what we could see from the street - it's just lovely!
