  1. We thought of a few more over here: "Axel F" from Beverly Hills Cop, "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran from that movie, and I guess you could put the Ghostbusters theme in here, as well. Duran Duran is probably the only one I'd listen to, though.

What about The Goonies?! I still love Cyndi.

I think someone mentioned The Karate Kid and while I don't like this song, I love any excuse to link to

    .

Madonna had some 80's soundtrack tunes, didn't she? "Crazy for You" and "Live to Tell" are the only ones I can think of right now.

  2. I think it would be awesome. People can come in after the bars, sober up,meet people after/beforework,etc..

    It can be called;

    "The OTHER couch"

    "Bleary sports"

    "Not for Wives"

    "The Refuge bar."

    etc.

Not for Wives, huh? Guess that counts me out then. I was up at this hour, too, but I didn't reply then. That's probably strike two for me, anyway, right? ;)

  3. The windows up the stair to the turret are a nice touch. I guess anyone who needs to ascend the tower to save Rapunzel can look out the window on the way to see if any evil knights, dragons, or witches are approaching.

Well, my 5 year old daughter thinks the turrets are beautiful. She reminds me of this every time we drive by another one & I gripe about it. There's a house near us, though, that has a tower instead of a turret. It really looks like it should have cannons aimed out of it. You know, in case the knights, dragons, or witches show up.

  4. The Better Off Dead soundtrack had "Like to Get to Know You Well" by Howard Jones. Also, the title track from Pretty In Pink?! I love(d) the Psychedelic Furs. That whole soundtrack was pretty good - it had The Smiths and New Order plus the previously mentioned Echo & the Bunnymen & OMD.

I've watched all of those John Hughes 80's teen movies so many times that even hearing one of those songs makes me think of the films. "Wouldn't It Be Good" by Nik Kershaw? I immediately think of Pretty in Pink. "I Go Crazy" by Flesh for Lulu? Some Kind of Wonderful. "Edge of Forever" by Dream Academy? Ferris Bueller.

HELLO!? BUELLER?! Has anyone mentioned that one yet? "Oh Yeah" by Yello. Sigue Sigue Sputnik & Big Audio Dynamite, too.

  5. I looked up the address in a couple directories and maps, and nothing about "LML."

And I ran in to sheeats on site!

I have some photos to post soon as well.

I wish I had known you two were headed over there! I'd love to go back & take some pictures, but I'm too paranoid that I'd get run off. I'm really quite the ninny sometimes. I mean if I did get run off ... then I did? I don't know what I'm so worried about. I might head over in the next couple of days since I'll have a bit of free time. Hopefully I can go before they tear them down.

Over the weekend I took a couple of (bad) pictures of the Bellaire house that Randy & Dennis Quaid lived in during the 60's. It wasn't torn down as of Sunday, but it will be soon.

  6. Anecdotal, but interesting! Do you happen to know when they were built? Or remember what they looked like inside? I'm just wondering if that parquet flooring and kitchen tilework is original. It certainly looked like it...

I was over in that area this morning, so I stopped by & peeked into my grandmother's old apartment. The kitchen is just as I remember it! There was white carpet in her old living room, though, so I peeked into the apartment across the hall. It had the parquet. I didn't go upstairs & see if I could peek in my aunt & uncle's old unit up there but as far as I recall, their living room floor was parquet, too. I honestly can't remember what was in my grandmother's living room back then, but I'd bet that parquet is under the carpet anyway. My grandmother's was a 1BR and my aunt & uncle had a 2BR, but the layout was just about the same.

Unfortunately I have no idea when they were built. I even asked my mother, thinking her memories/knowledge as an adult might be better than mine as a child, but she didn't know, either. They seem older than 1960 to me, too, but I have only opinion to go on. My family members weren't living there until mid-70's at the earliest, so my limited knowledge starts there.

BTW, business must be booming at the Guild Shop. I was over there around 9am and people were lined up waiting for it to open!

  7. I spent a lot of time at this complex as a kid in the late 70's/early 80's. My aunt & uncle rented a 2nd story unit in one building and my grandmother rented a ground floor unit in another one. I used to go across Indiana to that convenience store & buy candy. Not very informative, I know - just anecdotal.

  8. Zappo's was much better in my opinion. I think Schlotsky's had already been open a couple of years before Zappo's closed. When they remodeled the shopping center they raised the rent, which is probably why Zappo's closed.

Yeah, I liked Zappo's better, too. You remember how you could buy half sandwiches? I used to go pretty regularly during my high school years and get a whole cheese melt. One day I went & ordered just a half and the guy working asked me if I just wasn't that hungry that day or what... I told him that I was just too broke that day! When I got home & opened the bag, he'd given me a full sandwich.

  9. I went to this 2 or 3 years ago. These houses are not my taste at all, but I was still curious. We were amazed at how much sloppy stuff was visible on these very expensive homes. I'm talking small stuff, for sure, but things like ridiculously cheap hinges, patchy finishes, baseboards that didn't even line up correctly & had gaps, and so on. Made me wonder about the stuff we couldn't see. I'm not a builder by any stretch, but you'd think they'd polish it up when they're showing off homes that sell near or over a million dollars. Was it better this time around?

They sure do love their turrets.

  10. There was also another restaurant called The Coquery.

Is this the one that you could take a shortcut through from Galleria I to get to Galleria II? It dumped you right over by the theaters ... I could never remember the name of that place.

  11. This dates me, but I saw the first Star Wars in first release at one of the Galleria theatres.

I'd almost be embarrassed to tell you how many times I saw that movie in that theater. Remember those circular bench things with the planters in the center? My friend & I buried an R2-D2 toy in there while waiting in line and then when it was time to move along, we couldn't find him.

I know I have pictures taken in the mall, but I think finding them will prove difficult. I'll start the search!
