Chicago or St. Louis (which may become a reality), although I am not attuned to cold weather at all.
-
I currently live in a 51 (Braeswood area), which is the second worst of all the places I have lived in Houston for the past ten years -
The best were an 88 and a 78 in Montrose, and a 75 in the Museum district
The worst by far was a 25 when I thought it would be a fun experiment to live off of 290 near Hollister...oops, I was wrong!
As far as real life goes, the scores pretty much reflect how I feel/felt living in those places.

Zimm's - still there I think. Earlier that had been a Steak 'n Egg
Butera's was a great place - especially the Butera family. I am saddened that nothing remains of Mr. Johnny's legacy.
Zimm's on Montrose near Richmond - wine bar now? (but still owned by Mr. Zimmerman)
I used to live across the street from one of Butera's sons - he had opened an Italian restaurant on Bellaire Blvd. called Angelina's (?) after his daughter, I believe (it's now Nick's Pasta Place). I think when he sold it he moved out of the Houston area.

Does anyone have an old map that shows the original route San Felipe took going west out of downtown?
San Felipe was where W. Dallas is now, one block north of Saulnier.

Also, here is the Westheimer-Hathaway-Elgin alignment (which was a little disjointed) c. 1925:

Does anyone remember Food Giant? What about Weingartens?
I don't remember going to Weingarten's, but right now I am looking at a picture of me as a little kid on a picnic with a Weingarten's shopping bag on the table.
I don't remember Food Giant, but I remember Food Lion (not shopping there, but hearing not so great things about it).

I believe the themed neighborhood is Prestonwood (out by 249/1960)
edit: here is a Chronicle article from a few years ago that might still be relevant (and it mentions Prestonwood Forest):

Fox26 posted a report with video from the protest yesterday:

Sad to see the words/actions exchanged between the two parties.

There are tons of street name changes - good references are the Harris County Block Book maps or Sanborn Maps - depending on the year of the map, there are often different names, or new names written in and old ones crossed out..
You can search the block books by subdivision name here:

Does anyone here shop at McCain's on Heights Blvd?
The Heights may be on my next moving tour of Houston, and I was curious...

I hate to be the potential bearer of bad news - I saw the demo permit post for 3803 Westheimer (the old Shell), and the "Owner/Occupant" is listed as Wachovia Bank.
So either it is going to be another bank, or Wachovia just owns the land - I'll try to keep up with construction permits for that site to see what they build...

There are a couple blocks worth of homes north of there going through the same thing, but many have been permitted for demolition already - it's just north of the bayou off of Clinton and Gregg streets. At least one house had a violation notice for being an unsafe structure.
I am making a photo montage of all the homes (i'll post when it's finished) but they look about the same as the ones danax posted above.

^that's a good opportunity to make handpuppets on your visor
I have probably mentioned this before, but I seem to encounter it (and at more intersections) more then ever:
Green lights with a left turn yield. Some folks just can't (or won't) get it. They just go - right in to oncoming traffic.
-Sunset at Main - seems to be more of the folks turning left onto southbound Main from the little Fannin split.
-Greenbriar (southbound) at Rice.
-Brompton (north and southbound traffic) at Holcombe. This one is particular bad because southbound traffic turning onto Holcombe going east comes out of a neighborhood, and I bet these people do the same stupid thing every day.
K. There.

I get occasional calls from my credit union after I've been out of town, but not always. There doesn't seem to be an exact pattern.
Regarding police telemarketing, a couple years back I received a call asking for a donation - I didn't recognize the name of the organization, but I don't give money over the phone either. I told them I don't make donations over the phone and asked if they had a web address or print materials.
The guy then said something like "so I'll put you down for $30?"
I repeated what I said, and he said an expletive and hung up the phone. Nice.

for the less busy streets i would agree. i went through a couple in a hood near mem city earlier this week. my corolla made it easily but i could see some drivers having issues.
but to keep traffic moving for busier thoroughfares, the circle would have to be larger to allow for turns at a reasonable speed.
There's one close to Memorial City Mall - maybe around Kingsride/Benignus - that was pretty tight for larger vehicles. As I was approaching a fire truck came up - it cut the circle diagonally and still had a difficult time.
-
Yep - probably about 90-110. Kinda hard to exactly calculate since it isn't a perfect circle, but the radius of the loop ~6 miles.
Isn't the perimeter about 40 miles?

Yes, note merged topics.

Thanks for the replies so far.
texianjoe: I will see if I can manage to do that. If it works, great (but I still got swiped $250 from the dealership).
vertigo: yeah, I have heard that more than once - this is my third Ford vehicle, and it has had the most problems (but not that much really). I had a truck once with no problems, an Explorer with only one electrical malfunction, and now this car which has been decent, except for the ignition failing a few months ago and now this.
I am not frustrated with the car - I am frustrated with the service.

I found 2808 Hadley in 1951 - must have been one page down from the map posted above.
-
I'll dig through some older city directories this evening...
Also, it appears that the 2800 block of Hadley is now owned by the Foundation for Tomorrow (Yellowstone Academy?), was previously owned by HISD, then Grocer's Supply in the eighties.

If you don't have money for the toll, you stop at the full service stall and fill out an IOU form. They take your license information and give you 15 or 30 days to pay the toll.
I always wondered how that worked. I have only been on a toll road once in the area (yep - a mistake) but i happened to have some change handy.

KPRC is reporting that the mall murder was random:
The gunman behind a fatal shooting at a north Houston mall set a fire at his job and called his ex-wife before choosing his victim at random, police told KPRC Local 2.
