Anyone been inside La Luz Del Mundo?
This is the church out 59 north.
I saw it this weekend. I couldn't decide if I liked it or if it was "almost oppulent tacky". It certainly is a head-turner. Guess I'd have to see it a few more times. Can't wait to see the inside though.

I guess I was too quick to judge the Chron. Who can argue with quality journalism like this?:
Turkey legs take center stage at the Houston Heights Festival -
Claudia Trevino, 21, had two words to describe the turkey legs at Sunday's Houston Heights Festival. "They're awesome," Trevino said about 3 p.m., just moments after biting into the $5 delicacy at the 29th annual event.

They looked yummy but that is hardly stop the presses kind of stuff. Besides the Italian Ice was a much bigger story, beyond awesome. I have to admit the Chronicle does seem to be lazy w/o any competition.

I don't know much about football. How come the Texans suck so bad and can't win?
Good question. If the Texans knew they wouldn't suck so bad and they'd be winning.

Great Southern Life Insurance Co. occupied a building on this corner in the mid-50's. I had a summer job there just after I graduated from high school. There was a park called Dunlavy Park just south of there that had a swimming pool. I have no idea how long Great Southern was there. Seems like I remember a Great Southern building near Richmond and Buffalo Speedway when I worked for TI on the SE corner of Buffalo Speedway and Richmond in the early-mid 60's. Does anyone know the evolution of the occupancy of the Richmond-Dunlavy corner from the 50's on?
It was an HCC campus before HISD took it over.

Yeah what they all just said
just seems like you lost your bearing
Westwood and Sharpstown were similar in situation to Town and Country and Memorial. Too close together. One of them had to go. Unfortunately, Sharpstown hasn't been upgraded like Memorial has.

Maybe Cedar Point could build something here. A roller coaster fanatics dream park.

Ok, boys and girls, i'll help spill the beans here. Six Flags is getting out while they still can, and the property still worth Buu-Kuus of dollars. I know the "rumor" of DisneyWorld coming to Katy, or just outside of it, has been floating around for years. Do you think if Disney did come to town that Astroworld could function and still make a dollar ? No Way my friends ? That is why they are getting out. Mickey, I'll be shakin hands with you soon.
Disneyworld?! How kewl. One can only hope.

Let's put an end to this silliness, once and for all.
Yakuza was correct. BP's North American HQ is in Warrenville, Illinois
North American headquarters

This is also somewhat of a remnant of its "Standard Oil days." BP first bought Standard Oil of Ohio, which was based in Cleveland. For a time, then, BP's North American HQ was indeed in Cleveland. But they later also bought Standard Oil of Indiana (aka Amoco), which was based in Chicago, downtown in the huge white skyscraper right on the lakefront known locally as "Big Stan". When the combined the former Standard of Ohio with the former Amoco, the North American HQ ended up in Chicago (or Chicagoland; I'm not sure when they abandoned the downtown skyscraper and moved to the suburbs.)
Ooops. My bad. I haven't lived in Cleveland for 21 years and my info is kind of old.
-
Several of you caught my mistake on BP, but you got my point. Even if the HQ is not here, most significant oil companies have large presences here.
I think BP's US headquarters is still in Cleveland. Remnents of it's Standard Oil days.

So does the Target center look urban or suburban?
Nothing there to judge by yet. The site plan looks pretty suburban to me. Hopefully the bike trail on the site will make it to completion.
-
Those are busts for a presidents exhibit at a theme park (in Virginia?). They are being created by a local sculptor.
Thanks for the info. The area around the Target is really different. Artist loft/wharehouses etc. It was fun exploring an area of Houston I never saw before. Hope the re-development doesn't drive out the artists.
-
I drove by the Target site a couple of weekends ago to check out the progress. On the way I saw some sort of wharehouse with all these "President" busts in the parking area. These things must have been 10-15 feet tall. Made of some sort of concrete stucco mix. There were probably about 20 of them. From Teddy Roosevelt to Clinton. Anybody know anything about this? No I'm not crazy! The voices said they saw them also.

That is a shame. I would be interested to see the statistics on how may restuarants quickly go under due to poor service. I think many new restuarants do not spend enough time training and working on customer service and assume it will all just work itself out.
Many people will experience what you did and simply never go back. I try to give a resturant a second chance if there were some redeeming qualities.
I'll be back. I'll give them a month or so to straighten their service out. Most places have service issues when they first open.

Was there Saturday. The lady at the cash register couldn't have been ruder. She growls at me "take a seat". Like I'm supposed to automatically know what their serving system is. There was no "please be seated sign". At the Oinion Creek you order from the counter. I assumed they had the same system at the Dry Creek. Well after being seated and ignored for about 15 minutes I just left. Looks like a nice place and hopefully they will get their service straightened out in time. Hopefully they will get some cheerful help because the place looks like a great addition to the area.

The disco Kroger had a makeover and is a little nicer now. HEB is the best. Just wish they had a nice new one in the Heights area.
