  1. I'm going to write a short story where a lonely, golden-hearted Wal*Mart trucker with a conscience who is just trying to make a living, accidentally turns onto Yale and goes over the bridge leading to catastrophic structural failure. As the truck plunges into the abyss below, cargo is hurled around in the trailer leading to damage to the top secret Wal*Mart R&D equipment contained therein. The soul essences of Wal*Mart employees mix with the shattered dreams of small town moms and pops, and is subsequently ignited by the spark of imagination from countless chinese underage workers leading to a massive energy release from the resulting matter/anti-matter annihilation. The resulting explosion destroys everything within a quarter mile radius of the bridge and induces some sort of radioactive fallout upon the bedraggled citizens living in the Heights' historic districts. A secondary plot line revolves around the family interactions of one Heights resident who tried to warn everyone about the dangers, and her tragic inability to reach the very people who were in the most danger because she was unable to come across as anything but a self-absorbed know-it-all.

Ooh ooh can we have the fallout create the zombification of everyone within a quarter mile radius?

  2. I saw today that all of the "For Sale" signs have been removed from the properties along Richmond across the street from Lucky Burger (corner of Mandell toward Dunlavy). These signs have been up at least 3 years, and the properties have been poorly maintained. I do not know if there is enough land for apartments, but it would be good if the properties were fixed up or replaced.

The Lucky Burger, Harp, Orange Bar and Maria Selma site has also been sold. They are all safe until 2014. I'll miss Lucky Burger.

  3. Full disclosure--I attend Lakewood and have since 2003. That being said--

I think you're disregarding what looks to be that the city will keep the 22 years balance of the $11 million lease in addition to getting the $7.5 million, which apparently was the value set by a city appraisal, not a Lakewood appraisal. Additionally, let's not forget that the whole thing came up because the city listed Compaq Center and something like 16 or so other properties for sale. Lakewood is the existing tenant but we've seen nothing about anything in their lease giving them the first right of refusal in the event of a sale. In fact, when the idea of the sale came up, there was word that another owner would buy the church from the city and Lakewood's response was that, "we have a lease that has to be honored by whoever is the new owner." When I rented a duplex I thought of approaching my landlord about selling outright because I thought it would be a good investment, so I (and many others) can understand Lakewood throwing its hat in the ring to be a potential owner. And if the city's asking price is $7.5 million, then I don't see how that's Lakewood's fault.

FWIW, before I attended Lakewood I was at another church in another state with 1200 people, one with 300 people, and one with about 20 people. There were things to contribute and get in all cases. They all have their value.

Guess the deal makes more sense when fully explained. I suppose my dislike of churches in general (not just Lakewood) not paying property taxes colored my opinion on this particular deal.

  4. I'm not a big fan of mega churches either, but the building looks a whole lot better than an empty parking lot would. Since most arenas that are replaced end up getting torn down, I think that this is a pretty good deal for everyone.

A good deal would have been Lakewood paying market value for the property. Didn't HISD get 38Mil for a smaller parcel of land nearby? A parcel that is now generating property taxes for the city?

  5. How did I know that there would be nothing but sarcasm before I opened this thread? One of the reasons that HAIF is dying is because of responses like those above. I'm sure I'll get a "lighten up" from someone, but these kind of comments are really offensive.

Do you really think sarcasm directed toward a con-artist like Joel Osteen is an insult to religion in general? Joel Osteen and those of his ilk is what should offend you.

  7. Yall must have some kind of attention deficit problem...I can talk on a phone, and drive, in exactly the same manner and fashion as if I were not on it at all. If Im not on the phone Im listening to the radio, paying the same amount of attention to it, as I would be a person on the phone. It does not take one single bit more of concentration (for me) to be on the phone than it does to talk to a person in the car, which I also do when I have a passenger. As I said in the first 2 responses, I use my hands free blue tooth - and I never text, or dial the phone while driving....heck I dont even dial when Im not using the bluetooth...its just easier to say, call (insert name here) than it is to look the number up and dial it. I have seen the studies, they all show that texting is the same as drinking and driving, not talking with a blue tooth device, and I don't disagree with that - its almost impossible to text and drive...heck its difficult to just text with how small the keys on the phones have gotten. But if your not holding the phone, which I dont, I do not see at all, how your driving is effected unless your just old and slow. Like it or not, I am confident in my ability to drive while I talk on the phone - your opinion, or a stupid law to grab money is not going to change that.

And study or no study, I still think a person in the car is a larger distraction than a hands free phone ever could be. A baby is constantly requiring attention, a toddler is worse, a young child is screaming, spilling, unbuckling, fighting,etc... teenagers do whatever it is that they do now, and normal adults talk - they talk about the same things they would talk about if they were on the phone, so there is no difference there. The difference between having a passenger and being on the phone is that you have the added distraction of the persons movements, and emotions, but a slight advantage in a second set of eyes.

To me all the studies show is that some people cant do both safely - I know I can. I can also handle a gun safely - Im sure its the same groups of people who are out to save us from ourselves that dont want cell phone in cars, also dont want people to have guns. Its all a money grab in the name of safety - and its very difficult for a politician to stand up and say he is not for safety, let alone the extra money it brings. It may sound like Im some cocky punk kid who thinks the rules dont apply to him, but thats not the case - I know my driving abilities, I don't speed, I don't drive aggressively, and I do a whole lot of coasting... for me (maybe not you) its not distracting or difficult to talk and drive, and I suspect its not for a huge problem for alot of folks. Its just the politicians out to govern all us to protect us from those who probably should not be driving anyway.

Pssst.....this law does not apply to you.

Texas - House Bill 55 - Provides that an operator may not use a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle within a school crossing zone unless the wireless communication device is used with a hands-free device.

  8. But hot tea will make you feel better if you have the flu. Conservative conspiracy to expand tea parties!!

No just the opposite. People will be drinking the tea instead of tossing them around at the tea parties. Maybe they can have a coffee clache instead. But to get serious and back on topic. Will hot tea relieve the pain if you're a re-animated zombie craving brains?

  9. You could be right. It's all coming together now.

    MJ.jpg

It's as plausible as Pat Gray's theory that this is a government conspiracy to limit public gatherings. Yep, it's an Obama plot to stop the Tea Parties.

  10. What's the deal with the construction barrier along the back of Heights Hospital along the 400 block of W 20th street? There has been no activity for at least four months and the street is reduced by cordoning off the East bound lane behind the Hospital.

They first went up when the brick facing on the upper floors blew down during Ike. Not sure what the delay is in getting rid of them.

  11. Name drop a few well known names and that makes the area upscale, that alone is a riot. Everyone that is reading this, I urge you to take a drive around Dowling to where this event occurred when sun is going down, then cruise around until around midnight. How many brave souls are walking around? How many freaks creep up from nowwhere?

I just dont believe in sugar coating & its too bad developers dont like my honest assesments but that's life like the song goes. Back to topic though. Any idiot that is scoring or trying do a to pick up gets what they deserve at that insane hour. I bet HPD says the very same thing. Now students, shall we turn the page now... :)

So what is your point? That he was there "trying to do a pickup". A man can't drive around in his own neighborhood? Do you have any facts to back up your assertion or are you just being a gossipy old lady? Also, how do you know so much about what this area is like late at night? Cruising around "trying to do a pick up"?

  12. I knew the hotel was gone, but I have wondered about its history. The TSHA says that the hotel was converted into the Texas Christian Sanitarium, and I've seen that elsewhere. The sanitarium doesn't really look crescent-shaped - but then, maybe the hotel didn't turn out to be cresent-shaped in the end.

Also, I've seen in a number of places that the hotel was on the NE corner of 19th and Ashland - Carter & Cooley, for example, say that they are located on the former site of the Houston Heights Hotel. Sister Agatha also references the NE corner of 19th and Ashland.

Sister Agatha also mentions, though, that she hasn't found any record of the hotel. I think I might research it a little and see if I can find out more about it and the sanitarium. Seems like I remember reading about a fire at one of the two.

Speaking of Sister Agatha here is a link: http://community.rice.edu/focusresources/b...atha/index.html

Very interseting read for those that may not be familiar with "The History of Houston Heights" by Sister M. Agatha

  13. The following is an excerpt from an 1892 newspaper article, in the Galveston Daily News, regarding the construction of Houston Heights. It probably could have gone in the History section as well, but I thought it might be of more general interest here.

I know the location and history of some of the structures/features mentioned, but not all. It could be that some weren't built, or at least not as planned.

The hotel is long gone. It was at the site of the Senior high-rise on 19th.
