  1. To the best of my recollection, the Witch's Hat House used to be the location of the Hallie Prichard Dance School, a popular place to study tap, ballet, etc., in the 1950's-1960's. Someone with an old city directory may have more accurate information.

That house was demolished and replaced by a :o bath house :o . The "witches hat" was at the architural antiques place on Westheimer for a time, don't know where it ended up.

  2. Where in those last stadium deals did we get profit? How did those stadium deals make money back for the city which the city could use to pay for more police? We both agree that the answer is n/a.

Now, what if there were a way to use this new stadium for MLS to profit the city of Houston? There's no rich owners here threatening us. Why do we have to assume that all stadium deals have to be ones where the city has to lose? It doesn't have to be that way.

The NYMets stadium deal seems like a good go by. The Mets foot the bill for the stadium and the government entities do the necessary infrastructure improvements (roads, subway lines etc.).

  3. Just got off the phone with someone from the PM company (super nice). I took the opportunity to ask her what was happening here. She told me the following (and gave me permission to share). I wont lie to you. This isn't the best of news...

    Confirmed...

    Chick Fil A

    American Mattress

    Payless Shoes

    Banks we already know about

    In the works...

    Chilis

    Starbucks

She didn't know anything about a 24 hour fitness, urban myth I guess. They left space for Target to be able to expand into a SuperTarget if they choose.

The apartments are supposed to be high end, so maybe that will drive better future options than mattresses and cheap shoes...

Oh joy, all we are missing is a pay-day loan place and a dry cleaners. Guess I'm not getting the HEB I was hoping for.

  4. So, I guess that means the Non-smokers only get to drink themselves dead ? Why not serve cookies and milk at these tar-lung free bars also ?

IT"S A FRIGGIN" BAR ! You don't go to a bar to be "healthy". I got it ! They can install a BAR at your local 24hr. fitness, and you can kick back with a Mai Tai, while you are on the treadmill trying to pick up the drunk broad next to you on the stairmaster, while her fat friend tries to run interference by jumping in between you two while doing her pilates. <_<

Funny you should mention 24HR. Fitness (or any gym). Back in the day (I'm showing my age here) I remember people actually smoking in gyms. Do a set, have a smoke, repeat as necessary. Actually, even smoking at my desk at work seems so odd to me now. It's only been about 15 years since that went away.

  5. I am not a smoker, but it seems that couldn't a law be passed that would allow bars to be smoking or non-smoking. That way, non-smokers could stay away from that second hand smoke and smokers would be able to congregate and non-smokers who didn't mind could go to either.

A bar called Jefferie's tried that. Smoking only on the patio. They lasted about a month.

  6. Are you sure about that, west20th? I think Houston Heights was 50x132, while Sunset Heights was platted as 25 feet wide. In fact, the prevailing 25 foot lot size is part of what doomed Sunset Heights' Lot Line petition. They were actually trying to change the prevailing lot size to a BIGGER lot! Sheila omitted that fact from her response.

Well I shouldn't say "all" of the Heights. My block/subdivision definitely was and most of the Heights West of the Blvd. near Sunset was also. Actually, I think most of the Heights West of the Blvd. was intended as 25' lots w/alley access.

Let me re-state the above. My area (20th near Shepherd) definately was platted for 25' lots. I'm just making assumptions on other areas in the Heights west of the Blvd.

  7. wow I didn't realize lots were 25' wide. You might as well move a trailer in there. Deed restrictions will definitely prevent that. I definitely would be in favor of keeping existing lot size. But making the lot smaller to make the cost lower would be something I would be against. If you can't afford the home, then find another neighborhood. I know I want to live in River Oaks but i'm a realist and won't live beyond my means. Too many people are in way over their heads now.

To clarify. 25' lots were the norm when the Heights was platted. That was the developers intention.

  8. Also, rather than an ordinance strictly limiting someone's freedoms, a City-backed fund has the effect of empowering the masses in such a way that everybody can win...but only if the masses really want something and are willing to pay for it themselves. The issue of "a vocal few" that seems to crop up in these matters is entirely put to bed.

Good idea but it is not practical. What are the odds that this city-backed fund would ever get a fair sales price? What's to stop developers from threatening demolition just to be able to flip their property for an inflated price?

just because something isn't declared a landmark doesn't mean it doesn't qualify to be one (it does qualify to be on the national register of historic places), or people don't want it to be preserved.

weingarten would have to fill out the application, though

And if it was a historical landmark that doesn't mean squat in Houston anyway. The Ashland Tea House is a perfect example of that.

  10. I don't shop at CVS becuase they have terrible customer service. They could learn a thing or two from Walgreens.

I don't go to CVS because they ask if you have a CVS card. Yeah like I need another card in my wallet to go with the Kroger, Randalls, Vallero coffee card..........

  11. Where did you get the information that the victim was an illegal immigrant? Ther's no mention of immigration status in the KPRC coverage linked above.

Here's the Chronicle's coverage of the incident -- no mention there of anyone's immigration status:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3948940.html

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/3948935.html

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3945217.html

One of the above articles states that the boy's father "is in El Salvador," not that he was deported there. Care to explain how you know that the victim's father was deported, and that the victim was in the US illegally?

I read in the Chronicle that the boys father was arrested for a misdemeanor offense, jailed for a time then deported. The boy that got killed and his siblings are U.S. citizens.

  12. Is "Jazzy Cafe" in the Heights? Never heard of it. And I have killed before for a good po-boy.

There was a review in The Voice on it. It mentioned it was on the "industrial" side of 19th Street so I'm assuming it is on 19th, West of Durham. The review was kind of good but it mentioned the eclectic menu. You can get a fried rice side with your po-boy

  13. I'm curious. Do yours? Does your right to walk into a bar include the right to make me extinguish my cigarette? What if 75% of the people in the bar were smokers?

I'm not going to participate in this debate, but I would like to ask the 75% of non-smokers who approve of these bans in bars, why your personal rights outweigh mine...because that is all this is. The majority forcing out the minority.

Majority doesn't always rule. As much as George W. touts it when invading another country we are not a Democracy. Aren't minorities protected from the the "tyranny of the majority"?

That being said, I'd have to say a ban in bars doesn't make sense. It's not like the overly health conscious hang out in bars anyway. Myself, if the smoke is too bad I'll go to an ice house and sit outside.

  14. its a little different when the personal freedom affects others, especially their health. you're not allowed to urinate in the street, why don't you complain about that "silly ban" ? that's probably not the best analogy, and i really don't want to argue over the law - that's pointless since it already passed.

i actually am an occasional smoker, and don't mind it in clubs/bars or other venues. but i don't like it while i'm eating, so i was happy when this passed.

The best analogy I've heard (can't rememeber the source): Having smoking sections indoors is like having peeing sections in pools.

  15. Slow removal of personal freedoms........

Always start slow with things a lot of people can rally around then builds progressively from there once you have become used to giving things/freedoms away..........

Not a smoker, but hope the silly band isnt enforced.

Do your personal freedoms extend to where they interfere with my personal freedoms?

  16. Really? It looked to me more along the size of the San Felipe location. I probably just haven't looked at it close enough. I've never been a fan of any big box grocery department. Every time I've ever grocery shopped at either Target or Walmart I get a feeling in my gut that I spent more than I would have at a traditional grocery store.

Not to mention you walked twice as far to get the groceries and waited twice as long in line to check-out. I hope it is patterned after the San Felipe store.
