  1. Well... I guess in the opinion of some my "no reason for a light" comment is incorrect. I emailed Webber to ask what the holdup might be, and I actually got a response. They said this:

"At the South end of the project on Shepherd, (Dillards St)there is a school crossing and the community leaders request a signal light due to increase of traffic exiting from the connector. Webber was ready to open about a Month ago but have to wait until signal light and proper roadway stripping in place. Now is schedule to open August 24th."

    So there you have it

Still closed, as of yesterday.  Quite frustrating - there hasn't been much progress on those new signals at Dillards St in a while.

  2. Hey everyone - hoping y'all can provide some advice to me.

Last week I was backing out of a parking space at work (on private property), when a taxi came flying by behind me. I hit his passenger side. I have a witness saying he was speeding thru the lot (10mph limit). I was happy enough to trade insurance info and move on, but he insisted on having HPD show up.

Long story short, HPD showed up and wrote me a citation for the accident ("failure to back up safely")

Since then, everyone I've spoken to (including my insurance and the body shop) have been SHOCKED that HPD wrote me a citation on private property. Now I have a court date in May, and I plan on going in and speaking to the judge.

But my question is - what is my best course of action? I can't say to the judge "you should throw out this ticket because everyone says 'not cool, man!'", but I don't know if it was 100% legal for him to ticket me or not. Should I hire a ticket lawyer? Any recommendations?

There was talk mid-last year about the empty lot bounded by Crosstimbers, N Main, Yale, and E 45th street, just East of GO/OF.  People on the local Facebook pages swore that they heard from the horse's mouth that it was a done deal, but you know how people on the internet are :-)

Just measured it on Google Maps - 27,000 sq meters, just over 6 acres.  So who knows.  I'm sure the moment the rumor started, the price for the lot shot up.

  4. Thanks, we'll take a look at it. We have recently had an issue with a traffic sensor in that area because of the construction at Shepherd. However, it is causing the system to display no data (gray line) and not inaccurate data.

I do understand your concern about Amber and Silver Alerts on the message signs during times of peak travel. The policies regarding the message signs and prioritization of Amber and Silver Alerts are handled by the Texas Department of Transportation in Austin. You can contact them at http://www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/contact-us.html regarding your comments on the message postings.

Thanks for the answer.  While I appreciate the policies around Silver/Amber alerts, how about when the signs are displaying information about Rodeo parking, like this week?  Or the Strawberry festival.  Or a gun show.  Or a game at Reliant.  Or the Shell Open.  etc etc etc.

  5. I've noticed a lot of issues along I-45 North between 610 and BW8.  AM and PM.  Map shows green but I'm sitting at 0 MPH.  Sometimes there is a 15-20+ minute lag before the delay or incident shows up on the map.  I've seen multiple instances of an incident/accident being on the road for 30+ minutes, cleared, and THEN it appearing on the map.

Also, and I hope this isn't too off topic, but I've got to request one improvement:  When various festivals, conventions, shows, games, Silver Alerts, sobriety notices, etc take over the message signs, is there any way to have it alternate with the normal 'Travel Time' messages?  I'm sure there are plenty of people that need to know how to get down to Reliant or GRBCC, but I just need to get to work, and the travel time from 610 to 8 on 45 lets me know if I should take Hardy or not.  The signs are visible long enough that both messages should have ample time to be displayed before folks drive by.  Thanks!

Hello, I am a representative from Houston TranStar and I'm sorry you are having trouble with the map. Our goal is to make sure the map is as accurate as possible. Can you let me know which freeways or sections of freeway you are noticing inconsistencies on so we can attempt to address the issue? Also, is this occurring during a specific time of day or day of the week? The map itself is not cached and you can verify that you have the most current version by looking at the timestamp in the top left corner. It should be within a minute or so of the actual time.

  6. At the risk of getting banished from this thread, I ran the marathon.  I missed running through the Heights.  The crowds in the Heights were way better than those down in River Oaks.  But getting the race off of the viaduct made a huge difference for the marathon.  The viaduct was a bad choke point for the race.  Runners would go from 4 lanes to 2 lanes just over a half mile from the start.  Mid pack runners would have to stop and walk when they got on the viaduct because it was so crowded.  This year, the start flowed much better than it had in the past as runners had four lanes all the way through W. Gray.  Houston has very limited startline choices for the marathon.  In NY, they are able to get 45,000 off because they start on the Verrazano Narrows bridge with twelve lanes between the upper and lower decks of the bridge.  In Houston, even with the much improved start, it still took almost a half hour to get everybody out of just four lanes.

In every other city people know how to merge.  Here they can't even do it while running, let alone driving.
