I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated December 23, 1954 and came across the address of the infamous historic mansion of Abe Zindler that was demolished for the 610 freeway. The address is 4706 Bellaire Blvd. Does anybody have pictures of the home before it was demolished? Mr. Z. I was browsing the newspaper Southwestern Times dated March 31, 1949 and came across Marvin Zindler's old home that was demolished to make way for the 610 freeway. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 14, 1986 and came across an advertisement for Bissonnet Plaza Apartments located at 5104 Buffalo Speedway. There were two different apartment complexes on each side of the street. Looks to be have built in the 1950s and demolished in the late 1980s or 1990s. The two shopping centers were built in replace of these apartments? Plaza In The Park Shopping Center and Terrace Shops Shopping Center. Any pictures of the apartment complex? Did anyone happen to live here? These prices listed! $260 for a studio apartment in Greenway Plaza/West University? 37 years later and I'm sure that $260 apartment would be $1,260. So crazy! I never knew about this small neighborhood park in River Oaks. I believe it was first named after the daughter of George Meyer, Rebecca Meyer. Now it is simply referred to as Meyer Park? Kind of confusing since the large shopping center near meyerland is called Meyer Park Shopping Center. Rebecca Meyer Park covers an area of 1.8 acres and offers 0.3 miles of footpath. Located a few blocks north of Westheimer in River Oaks. From a Sanborn map dated 1934 - Aug 1950, probably in 1948.

I discovered a new hospital! The Turner Urological Institute located at 506 Caroline Street. The hospital was active in the 1930s and 1940s. Found in the publication: Texas State Journal of Medicine, Volume 38, Number 7, November 1942. Turner Urological Institute 506 Caroline Street, Houston, Texas B. One more historical write-up and an enlarged image of the campus rendering. From the book Houston's Forgotten Heritage: Landscape, Houses, Interiors, 1824-1914. Published in 1991. Greenwood Sanatorium for Nervous and Mental Diseases 9218 Old Main Street Road (now Fannin) at Old Spanish Trail built 1912; demolished 1951. One of the first private hospitals for mental illness in Texas, Dr. James Greenwood’s sanatorium was located on six acres backing up to Brays Bayou. The main building, pictured here, had forty-two rooms for patients plus rooms for nurses on the third floor. The separate two-story men’s building had twenty-two rooms. A furnace house with a boiler room, an artesian well, tennis courts, and a croquet field were also on the property, as well as woods where Dr. Greenwood’s sons hunted quail, doves, and prairie chickens. I figured I can transcribe information about the hospital's real estate, development, architects, and staff. I'll try and keep it in Chronological order. The Houston Post. dated June 1, 1912: Greenwood Sanatorium Handsome Colonial Structure Going Up Near Bellaire. Construction work has been begun on the new sanatorium near Bellaire for Dr. James Greenwood, Jr., of Galveston. The plans for the building were drawn by Jones & Tabor Architects. It is located to the west of the Main street road, a half-mile beyond the point where the street car line turns off to Westmoreland. The building will be a two-story frame structure in a graceful colonial architecture, with a long porch with columns in front. The building will represent a cost, with equipment, in the neighborhood of $20,000 or more. It will contain twenty rooms and will be operated strictly as a sanatorium. The contract calls for completion in three months. The Houston Post. dated August 7, 1912: Dealings in Real Estate Transfers Filed Tuesday Aggregated $46,605.00. Six Acres of Land Out of P.W. Rose Survey Sold to Dr. Greenwood’s Sanatorium for Consideration of $18,000. Among the real estate transfers filed for record Tuesday in the office of the county clerk was one from James Greenwood, Jr., to the Dr. Greenwood’s Sanatorium, conveying six acres of land out of the P.W. Rose survey, fronting on the Main Street Road, south of Brays Bayou for a consideration of $18,000. The Houston Post. dated September 22, 1915: Dispensary Treated Many Patients. From June, 1914, until March, 1915, there were 2329 visit made to Rusk school dispensary. Physicians held 192 clinics performed 25 operations and the nurses made 2775 visits to the homes of patients. Dr. Greenwood’s Sanatorium was established by Dr. James Greenwood in 1912, and is located one mile south of the Rice Institute. The building is a frame structure with 28 rooms. An addition of 18 rooms is to be made in the near future. The building is furnished throughout with pure artesian water, electric lights and steam heat. The staff of physicians are Drs. James Greenwood and C.W. Stewart. There are 11 nurses attached to the sanatorium. The Norsworthy Hospital is located at 3020 San Jacinto Street. – Established in the year 1909 by Dr. O.L. Norsworthy, who is its present proprietor.

I found a photo of James Greenwood, Sr. in the Texas State Journal of Medicine dated October 1949. This was his obituary of his death. Dr. James Greenwood, Sr., Houston, Texas, died at his home August 22, 1949, of cerebral arteriosclerosis. Born in Seguin on April 18, 1878, he was the son of Judge James and Corinna (Henderson) Greenwood. He received his preliminary education in private schools in Seguin and attended the John H. Bishop Academy for Young Men, Seguin. Dr. Greenwood was graduated from the University of Texas School of Medicine, Galveston, in 1901 and began his practice in Seguin. From 1902 to 1906 he was on the staff of the San Antonio State Hospital for Mental Diseases. After again practicing in Seguin from 1906 to 1908, he became associated with the Department of Medicine of the University of Texas, Galveston, where he remained until 1912. At that time he established the Greenwood Sanitarium for the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases in Houston, and practiced there until his retirement in 1947. He was professor of neuropsychiatry at Baylor University College of Medicine for several years and was professor emeritus at the time of his death.

This was yet another business venture from Michi Gaidos? He also had 2 other restaurants. Given the date, maybe this was his first? I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 21, 1960 and came across a classified listing that mentioned the business Bellaire Turnpike Go-Kart Race Track At 5433 Richmond Road, now Bissonnet Street. Does anyone have any memories here? Any pictures of the place? I tried looking on old images but I cannot locate the go-kart place. Maybe it was a smaller indoor track? This would have been at the intersection of Bissonnet and Chimney Rock. I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated October 23, 1931 and came across a business advertisement for South Main Bowling Alley located at the End O' Main. Another ad which I cannot find at the moment, specified the location of Main at Bellaire. A little confused. This isn't the infamous Palace Recreation Bowling Alley located at 6445 South Main Street? The Palace Recreation Lanes was said to be directly across from Rice University in the 6400-block of South Main. Holcombe & Main has an address of 6977 South Main, using the address of the old Shriner's Hospital. Guess they are different? I wonder why this bowling alley doesn't get the historical press as the Palace Recreation Lanes. I guess being across Rice University had some fame. I believe I figured it out. These bowling alleys are a decade apart! South Main Bowling Alley was active in the 1930s. Palace Recreation Bowling Alley was active in the 1940s. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated October 10, 1980 and came across an unusual advertisement for a club on South Main. This is the Rinestone Rangler Club located at 9150 South Main Street. A little confused. Did the former club The Ranch Houston Club close down and R&R went in? That's right, thought I recall hearing The Ranch burned down and then moved a few blocks over on Buffalo Speedway. I guess R&R was built after The Ranch left. I was looking around the landscape of the of South Main coordinator in the 1950s and found a zig-zag race track (which would either be motorcycle dirt bike racing - motocross, or go-kart racing) next to the old Sam Houston Airport located on South Main Street. This race track was located at the present-day Hillcroft Street off of South Main Street. With addresses, around, 12417 Hillcroft Ave. near 13755 South Main St. The race track existed before that section of Hillcroft street was built. Anyone know about this track? Would love to know a name, or address, so I can research it further. With oval tracks, it's always a hit or miss if they are actual race tracks as they could be horse riding rings instead. With a track orientation like this, this can only be a race track of sorts? It's next to the airport, but I doubt planes would make all those loopy zig-zag turns. What else could it be?

I was reading some old Geophysical and Oil and Gas magazines and a corporation struck my eye. The company is Clevite Corporation, Texas Division which had their manufacturing and offices located at 9820 South Main Street in the 1950s. Anyone recall this campus or company? Looks like their old campus was at the corner of South Main & the 610 feeder. Possibly occupied by the present-day Alec Center Shopping Center that houses the restaurant Ruchi's Mexican Grill. I would have loved to see the area in the 1950s. All those small mom & pop/privately owned businesses that once thrived. Now replaced by national realty companies specializing in class-b retail centers. Give it another 20-30 years and these small retail centers will be replaced with denser applications such as multifamily housing combined with retail.
