During this stage, the Flood Control District is removing trees in order to add 12 million gallons of additional storage to protect the area during periods of heavy rainfall. Trees also had to be removed along the esplanades of South Braeswood Boulevard to install a new drainage pipe that will transfer overflow stormwater between the area neighborhoods and the new basins. The Flood Control District has made every effort to save or transfer as many existing trees as possible during this project. A significant tree planting effort will follow after construction has concluded which will include the planting of various sized trees to more quickly re-establish the forested canopy. However, the trees removed along the esplanades will not be replaced due to the placement of the new drainage infrastructure.

    Harris County FY 2019 Capital Improvements. https://agenda.harriscountytx.gov/2019/2019-02-26-FY2019-20InteirmCIP.pdf New Ben Taub Operating Rooms: The Ben Taub operating room (OR) project, which was funded by a 2016 bond issue, is in the final stages of construction. The $70 million project provides the necessary expansion of operative suites and supporting services on the second floor to support Level 1 trauma services at Ben Taub Hospital. The construction of 7 new rooms will be completed in 2019, with the projected opening in September. Most of the purchasing commitments for construction and equipment have already been made. The remaining bond project fund at November 30, 2018, is $39.7 million, reflecting the remaining expected cash outflows to complete the OR project, with any remaining funds to be used for the Ben Taub Emergency Center renovation project. Renovation of Ben Taub Emergency Center: The architectural and engineering planning has begun to modernize and renovate the emergency center at Ben Taub Hospital. This project is the next step in the continuing effort to improve emergency and trauma services at Ben Taub. Harris Health and the Harris County Hospital District Foundation are working on a $25 million philanthropic funding campaign to support most of the cost of the project, planned to begin in Fiscal Year 2020.
