I think it's like building an upscale dining establishment in the middle of 5th ward.
Huh...no it's not. East DT is not 5th Ward.

im very late to the game, but i hadn't driven down yale in years (i live on the other side of buffalo bayou). i did this morning. this area is currently so ugly that anything here--absolutely anything--would be better (i didn't relealize land west of downtown and inside the loop was still this bad). the road is also awful (close to Shepperd awful), so to get a private company to help with the road to boot is a great deal.
would it have been nicer to be mixed use, of course. but this developement should be a very welcome change for everyone in that area .
Most of Houston is ugly. I love it here.

Love it. This should be the "Thread of the Day". Another one bites the dust.

I just signed the petition... on my LAST official day as an East End resident. I just moved to Montrose.

What a POS drunk. My condolences to the officer's family.

Midtown is definitely in a building boom. So glad to see!!
Speaking of, does anyone have the scoop on a very fast construction at Louisiana and Hadley. My guess is a Taco Cabana, based on the store layout.
I LOVE Taco Cabana!!!
Really? Fake Tex-mex food IMO.

The land across from Camden Travis is probably what you are referring to. I talked to one of the managers that works at Camden Travis and they are supposed to break ground in the fourth quarter. I have been told that it will be retail on the first floor and apartments on the next three floors.
So I guess it's not going to be a park like some hoped it would.

The pharmacy buidling looks awesome. Reminds me of a 50's diner.

I spoke to the owner a couple of weeks ago. She said she is considering selling the place/looking for a buyer.
Cafe Flores or Dinner Bell?

Looks great. Is there a timeline?

Nice. Great place to take a date.

Went to see Kings of Leon on Sat. Got to DG early, approx. 1pm. Got a spot about 15 ft from the stage, after I got my beer, of course. Was in the middle of it all the crowd surfing and shenanigans. Alot of Kentucky fans in attendance. Had a blast.

Speaking of Broadmoor, does anyone know what happened to the old wooden "Broadmoor" neighborhood sign that used to be on the little triangular esplanade on Dumble Street? It's been gone for several weeks now.
Yes, it was faded and didn't stand up straight, but the Eastwood Civic Association board has been discussing restoring (or if necessary, replacing it) and it should not have been removed without contacting the ECA or Councilman Rodriguez's office.
A fellow HAIFer and I plan to contact the ECA about replacing the sign. Any more volunteers? There's strength in numbers.

I really like the one on Indigo.

They've also torn down a multi-story building at (say) Fannin and Holman. Both locations are easy walking distance from HCC.
HCC purchased the properties and tore down the building. Source: http://www.chron.com...ff/7081501.html

I'm with Ricco.
East DT is already anchored by Luckys, which is an everyman bar. So is Woodrows. I hope the new stadium and fans will allow the neighborhood to maintain a democratic nightlife scene, rather than the fauxsclusivity of the clubs on Washington.
If Washington Ave is for (I'm intentionally stereotyping here) douches and goldiggers, and Montrose if for freaks, hipsters and people who want super-trendy drinking and eating, then let the east end be itself. Unpretentious, low to moderately priced and taking all comers. And especially catering to sports fans due to proximity of the stadiums.
I like the sound of that.

I've live in Houston for 30 years, and there's a dreadful sameness about 'party' neighborhoods. They change, on a predictable basis.
In the early 80's Lower Westheimer was a fun place to party. Exuberant and chaotic. Eventually the neighbors complained and a police presence shut it down.
Soon after, it was the Richmond Strip. Ditto.
Shepherd Square? Same curve. Started fun, became popular, then obnoxious patrons overstayed their welcome.
For a while River Oaks Plaza was the 'in' place to party. Noise complaints and towed cars put an end to that.
Downtown? Ten years ago, there were some very cool bars; Saturday nights the streets were crowded. Violence broke out, and it became edgy - and not in a good way.
There seems to be a pattern.
Washington Avenue is vital nightclub scene, at the moment. Eventually, the people who live nearby will say "No, wait just a minute...", and may become less tolerant for overfunded young douchebags to vomit and urinate in people's yards.
Our lack of zoning is a mixed blessing. Is there an ideal place where young douchebags with excessive allowances can congregate, yell idiotically in the early morning and not irritate nearby residents?
Well said. Next up, Eado?

Ok. The sign is no longer there.

I drive pass Old Cage quite often and hopefully a preservationist w/ deep pockets of course picks it up. I can imagine from the top floor, it has a great view of downtown. Lofts entered my mind, then I thought "Yeah, right".
