  1. I wonder where the improvements will be made. Maybe they can get those train tracks out of the area. Or maybe even spruce up Harrisburg plaza a little more. Or you know what? Demolish that little check cashing place at the intersection of Wayside, Macario Garcia, and Polk. Put a nice arch, statue, obelisk, a column, or some kind of icon there. Something that would stand out and let visitors know they are now in da Greater East End.

    ....and the sports bar.

  2. Hello all you Broadmoor Newbees,

My Wife and I own a home on Scharpe and used to own another on Munger. You will love the neighborhood, it was very good to us and for that matter very safe. We had no issues other then the neighbor getting a little loud once in a while with his stereo and needing to be told to turn it down either by me or the police. You will find that Victor Trevino's guys are very good and very quick. He lives in the neighborhood and hosts the yearly Neighborhood night out at the ball fields including food, drinks, prizes, and activities for the kids. Location wise Broadmoor is situated perfectly and only getting better once Light Rail is built connecting Eastwood Transit Center.

I should note this though for any/all reading this. Our home is now a rental since we moved up north to our second home and the tenants called Centerpoint after smelling gas. They should have notified us first but CP came out, confirmed a gas leak at the 45 degree fitting underground and pulled the meter. Once the meter is pulled it takes a permit, licensed plumber, and bringing your house up to 2009 building code. This sucks for those who own older homes but alas it is what it is so our house will now have Gas lines (Heat, Water, Fireplace, Stove) installed to 2009 building code. If they had not called CP first I would have called the plumber who would have turned off the gas, replaced the fitting, tested the lines, and left with a much smaller repair bill and the tenants would have had hot water for the past week instead of not having hot water. We gave the tenants half off the rent in order to keep them happy since they are good tenants and are taking good care of the property.

Anyhow welcome to the neighborhood, I'm sure you will be as happy as we were and are.

    All the best,

    Scharpe St Guy

I appreciate your comments and the general feel of the neighborhood. I purchased on Munger last month. I'll be moving in very soon. Reasons for purchasing is it's close proximity to work (Midtown), DT, U of H, easy access to 45 and it's potential. As I posted before, I had mixed feelings, but hopefully that will change for the better as I get to know the neighborhood more and more. I'm looking forward for "National Night Out" and meeting the locals.

  3. When I tell are friends I live in Park Place, they know where I am by the traffic circle at Park Place and Broadway or by how close we are to Hobby Airport. Below is some history about one of Houston’s first airports.

    Check out http://www.1940airterminal.org/

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hobby Airport began service in 1927 as a private landing field in a 600 acre pasture known as W.T. Carter Field. The airfield was served by Braniff and Eastern Airlines. The site was acquired by the City of Houston and was named Houston Municipal Airport in 1937. The airport was renamed Howard R. Hughes Airport in 1938. Howard Hughes was responsible for several improvements to the airport, including its first control tower, built in 1938.The airport's name was changed back to Houston Municipal because Hughes was living at the time and regulations did not allow federal improvement funds foran airport named after a living person.

The City of Houston opened and dedicated a new air terminal and hangar in 1940.

Very interesting. Why is named Hobby? Shouldn't the county have named it Hughes after his death?

  4. i was looking on google streetview of a property i looked up on HAR this morning. The house across the street had police caution tape.

Of course, it also appears to have halloween spider webs.. but still..

Looks like a truly awful neighborhood.

It might be 'play' police tape. The Google-mobile tooks pics of the area around Halloween. I can clearly see my Halloween decorations when I look up my address. Wow, I hope people dont' think the house is haunted..ohmy.gif

  5. What are the approximate boundaries of Eastwood anyways?

East End management district website doesnt list the various neighborhoods, nor can i find a map anywhere. Eastwood Association website is equally unhelpful.

    Edit.

Nevermind.. found an old map. Eastwood is smaller and more West than i thought.

What neighborhoods make up the area east of Eastwood -

North of Lawndale and Telephone, South of Harrisburg, from Dumble to Wayside ?

Or is this also considered Eastwood in the broader sense ?

I've wondered that myself. I know the ECA serves many of the subdivisions along it's "boundaries". My parents home on Clay St. is called East View, it's a small section between Jackson MS and the Collier St. Here's a question, how can a subdivision become part of ECA? Does a petition need to be created? I know there's amembership fee, but does that make you , or the neighborhood part of the ECA?

  6. Good question.

I've grown to love Houston and what it has to offer. It's diversity, its affordability, its people, and the things in between. Does it have its flaws? Yes. Been living here most of my life....I'm used to it. I was at a forkroad after I graduated college. I had the door wide open. I was unemployed at the time and applied for jobs in Portland, Seattle, Austin, San Antonio, San Francisco. I thought about packing up and moving to Portland, in hopes of looking for a job once I get there. It was a difficult decision. Most of my family lives here. I was offered a job that I wanted here. I recently purchased a new home, so I may be here for awhile before I decide what to do. In the meantime, I'll enjoy, see, and experience all the changes happening around town.

  7. Will be depressing for hubby & I to tour Harrisburg again & see Lenox dining close. Dating in late 50s/early 60s we'd have BBQ sandwich at Lenox & go bowling down the street. We remember Mr & Mrs Schlumberger dine at a table near us one evening. Not really any "memories" left in the area. Dinner Bell still at Lawndale/Wayside & that's it. Still have rent house in the area & drive around occassionally. Did some driving couple of weeks age & our socks were knocked off when we saw remodeling of his ol' home place in Eastwood. New addition on back & what looks like a fish/koi pond covering back yard. New addition being built over pond. We're guessing it's a fish pond. Lotza concrete poured on very very small lot. We stil have most all the title searchs/policies on that property going back before that whole area developed...

Drove by the other day...Lenox BBQ is gone.

  8. Maybe we will be neighbors. Im buying on Munger as well. Still going through the contract agreement but I think things will come together soon. After your painting party, maybe I will have a "kitchen tearout" party! I will be the guy cooking on a coleman stove in the front yard until my kitchen is complete !

Best of luck! Let us know how it goes.

  9. Update:

Well, after house hunting for almost 6 months. I'm now a Broadmoor resident. I closed on a house on Munger. I'm excited that I have a place of my own! Being a first-time homebuyer, I was nervous at closing. But, everything came together for me. In an unfortunate circumstance the owners had to sell... I feel really bad for them. They agreed to pay for the foundation and replace the roof. I'm familiar with the neighborhood. I love the old homes. A good friend of mine lives on Godwin and has most of his life. I too had mixed feelings about the neighborhood, but I see the potential and aware its a transitioning area. I'm optimistic it will pick up. The more homeowners move in, the better. The house needs work, inside and out, but I'm glad I have my family and friends to help out. My girlfriend suggested having a "Painting Party" to kick off my rehab project. We went for a walk around 10pm...quiet street. I'm looking forward to meeting my new neighbors.

  10. If we're going to cut car capacity on Westheimer there might as well be rail instead of a freaking moat.

It'd be nice to have something besides a vacant Blockbuster, a gas station and a Smoothie King at what's supposed to be a major intersection in Montrose though.

anyone know what's going to take the place of the former Taco Cabana?

  11. As a subcontractor working on a few of their properties over the years (we don't now), they are BAD news. Pops has bailed out the kids and is now running the show as Silverkey. They have re-contacted some of the trades they have used as subcontractors in the past and have preached that "its a new day and all is well." Not so much and we are not going back in business with them again.

Good to know. I'm sure we HAIFers appreciate your input.

  12. LOL This board doesn't like ANYTHING.

I enjoy the Midtown scene, it's almost a fixture of nightlife here. On a side note, in listening to a local radio show this morning, they mentioned how Houston needs an "Entertainment District", similar to The Gaslamp District in San Diego, RiverCenter in San Antonio, and Chicago's Uptown Square, being the 4th largest city, it's suprising we don't have one persay. I was hopeful several years ago, it would be be Main St., wow, what happened? That scene is now dead IMO. Rant.
