  1. A submerged freeway is still a barrier unless its covered over with at least park land... ( and that would then be a tunnel, which so many houstonians think is impossible) Regardless, just look at 59. Montrose is no more connected and at one with University Place just because you now get from one to the other via an aesthetically pleasing bridge instead of an underpass.

Even if 59 were fully submerged, you'd still have the 6 block long GRB acting as a huge barrier for 1/3 of the way.

Downtown and Easton shall never be one.

    Implode GRB..Just kidding'.

  2. It was just a matter of time before developers, retailers, artists, and homebuyers took notice. I decided to stay/buy in the East End for this very reason....it's potential. I paid a hefty "price" for buying here (not going into details). IMO, development will continue to spread further east. Leeland is a great street, but I think Harrisburg has a greater chance for commercial/mixed-use. Polk has great potential. Canal/Navigation are wide streets, a magnet for retail/bars/restaurants. I often wondered why the huge empty land between the townhomes and Dodson Elementary isn't developed. If I only had the money.

  3. Trying to find some history here. Maybe HAIF can help?

My dad was telling me about back in the 60's he was in the Texas Medical Center, and how it was his wedding anniversary that day. He ran out of time so he had to stop by the nearest florist he could find. He was near the Medical Towers and drove randomly to find some flowers for his wife.

He went down the street and found a store called Jones Floral located at 6618 South Main Street. It was in a long retail strip center.

Decades later, I'm trying to find information on this florist.  Does anyone have any memories, or stories of Jones Floral? What about pictures of the store front or shopping center?

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Given how starved the east end is for basic, non-dollar store retail, outside of Idylwood and the usual Eastwood clique I doubt there will be meaningful opposition. Another grocery store in proximity will hopefully put the pressure on Kroger to step up their game at the Polk/Cullen store. Gulfgate HEB could stand to clean its act up, too. Interesting how this story broke about the same time it appears the Foleys warehouse is up for sale. I had always imagined that would be the logical place for the next big retail center along 45 South.

This would be a good location for a Target. Perfect for the Eado, Eastwood, Houston Country Club, and Idylwood residents.

  5. eastern conference? yuck. Houston is an AFC/Southern/Western conference type town. I don't like this!!! :P

So, our soccer team is in the Eastern Conference and our basketball team in the Western Conference...

  6. Hopefully 2011 and 2012 bring some nice residential infill to Houston's inner loop...

"Hines will probably be looking closely at “infill” locations such as “inside the Loop” in Houston, Baughn says. Finding sites where old, small commercial buildings can be torn down to render a prime apartment location will be a priority for Hines.

Expect to see Hines developing four-story apartments with parking garages in urban locations, as opposed to two-story garden apartments on far-flung suburban land."

"....old, small, commercial buildings". East of downtown? We'll see.

  7. Agreed, that would be real nice but they've gotta quit with 'eado'. That term just sounds nasty.

To my knowledge, residents of the east end were not asked about renaming our area. However, we were allowed to "vote" on a new color scheme/design for the Wayside & 45 underpass. The redo hasn't happened yet. Yawn

According to GEEMD's website, the underpass should be repainted by the end of the year. We'll see. The new design is definitely more attractive than what is there now.
