  1. From Cohen's enewsletterMayor Pro Tem Cohen, the departments of Public Works and Engineering [https://www.publicworks.houstontx.gov] andPlanning and Development [http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/] held the first meeting with the Lower Westheimer Corridor Study [http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/transportation/CMP/LowerWestheimer/index.html] Stakeholder Advisory Committee. The city is seeking community based recommendations for Westheimer (from Shepherd to Main) in order to prepare for future improvements. Lower Westheimer is a distinctive street surrounded by an eclectic neighborhood, diverse businesses, and important architectural buildings. While there are no current plans for the roadway, it merits an advanced level of design sensitivity due to its historic, cultural, and community significance. A series of public meetings will be announced over the next few months. Sign up for updates and to learn more about the study » [http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/transportation/CMP/LowerWestheimer/index.html]
  2. I was wondering if you are looking around Montrose or Midtown? I have a suggestion but it really should only be considered temporary living as it's a boarding house of sorts ( no kitchen and some of rooms have private baths but others share 2 rooms to a bathroom ) the property owners ( Little Finger Properties, I think) are really very nice and renovating ( yes it is a bit rough but has potential and location is killer)as they acquire enough money to do so.It's been a while since I dealt with them but it was less than $600 everything included--------24 rooms maybe? Iron fence surrounds property--locked gate. You get key to gate, front door and personal room door. It seems to always have waiting list forgot the address but behind convenience store at Brandt and Alabama.
  3. April 24th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Binz from Caroline to Chenevert, and Caroline from Binz to Wentwort
  4. From Cohen newsletter TUESDAY, APRIL 12th: the City of Houston will host a public meeting to discuss a new route for Cigna Sunday Streets [http://gohealthyhouston.org/sundaystreetshtx/] - White Oak Dr between Heights Blvd and Watson St. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss event details such as resident and business access and road closures. Sunday Streets attracts an average of 20,000 visitors per event and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle by encouraging citizens to explore their neighborhoods on foot rather than passing it by in a car. The meeting will begin at 6:30pm at the Heights Fire Station
  5. I think about this a lot more now that one of my kids moved into a 'gentrifying' area in third ward. Have you driven Dowling from I45 south? All those Townhomes and where do they grocery shop? Or go for fast food or CVS? There are not even many gas stations really. That new restaurant close to Anita street? COH immediately tore up the street so no one can approach-- how will that business succeed? All those people pulled toward that new park and community pool at Elgin and Dowling but nowhere to "treat the kids" to refreshments? It's not even a question of tearing down old buildings-- most of the old buildings are gone. Going further down Dowling and no grocery, no drugstores, no fast food.............but more and more of the original houses torn down and more multi family put in its place. Lots more people but really having to drive further. what ever it is that hasn't tempted grocery or fast food to the Dowling corridor might not be the "food desert" COH likes to talk about but I wonder really wonder about all that new construction for town homes but nothing else?

  7. From COH newsletter Recycling to Continue but Glass no Longer Accepted The City of Houston and Waste Management have reached tentative agreement on a new 2-year contract that will allow the city to continue offering recycling services without any disruption. The only change in service that Houstonians will notice is the elimination of glass from the list of items that are acceptable for placement in the green curbside single-stream recycling bins. Glass, currently has no value on the commodities market, breaks down during collection and transportation and is unduly destructive to the processing equipment. Residents will still have the option of dropping off glass for recycling at the City's neighborhood depositories. In announcing the tentative agreement, Mayor Sylvester Turner thanked Waste Management and Houstonians for being willing to engage in shared sacrifice during a time of fiscal challenges. "This agreement makes good economic sense for the city and for Waste Management," said Turner. "We want to reaffirm our commitment to recycling but we don't want the city tied down to a long-term contract that we cannot afford." The new arrangement, which City Council will consider on March 23, offers $2 million in savings over other options that had been on the table. The City's 6 Neighborhood Depository/Recycling Centers are located at: 9003 N. Main St. 77022 14400 Sommermeyer 77041 5565 Kirkpatrick 77028 2240 Central Street 77017 5100 Sunbeam 77033 10785 SW Freeway 77074 More information on the hours of operation and the materials that are accepted at the Neighborhood Depositories/Recycling Centers is available at http://www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/depositories.html Watch Mayor Turner & Waste Management's Press Conference for more information about this agreement and answers to questions about why we can no longer collect glass in the bins:

  10. The civic group is having annual garage sale later this month. The charity we asked to pick up last year didn't show then ignored our phone calls. We need pick up on a Saturday afternoon--- it's tough getting all the left overs packed up and stored then hauled then..... No one has pick up.....packing boxes scarce........Much easier to give leftovers to charity.... any suggestions?

  12. Drive by this corner-- notice anything missing?
  13. Heard Anthony Allender talk about this yesterday--- He said it should be completed before Superbowl event here in Houston.
  14. Heard the presentation and saw the flyer. This must be in early stages. The speaker worked for COH. Most of the Q&A was about the other crosswalk art installations at Elgin and Lousiana and at the Menil--neither seems to be holding up to wear and tear and that bothered everyone. The other talk centered on the $25,000 goal and how that money could be better used for safety.
  15. Funny you mention tools for your dad....... I frequent this store a lot just for that reason.....tools. The tool department is very well stocked and the sales associates seem to be knowledgable. It's a short drive from Montrose. Lots of my neighbors seem to go to Sears for same reason. When living in a one hundred year old house there is always something coming up for repairs or maintenance. If a craftsman tool breaks- you can take it back to Sears for replacement.
  16. This week the Neartown President received this letter: My name is Matt Brollier and I am working with a group of volunteers that is interested in raising funds to install artwork in the crosswalks at the intersection of Taft and Westheimer. We are seeking consideration of a letter of support from the Neartown Superneighborhood Association and are prepared to make a brief presentation to your board. I understand you have a meeting tonight, and we would be happy to present if there is time in your agenda. Our group started this effort following the hit and run death of our good friend Alex Hill at that intersection on January 8th of this year. In January, four of Alex's acquaintances spoke at Public Session of City Council, where several council members expressed support and directed us to the Montrose Management District. We spoke to the District earlier this month seeking support for our project and we have been directed to their Mobility and Visual Improvement subcommittee, chaired by CM David Robinson. Attached is the presentation we delivered to the District. I will update this for Neartown. Please let me know if tonight would be suitable for us to approach the board. Further, please let me know if you have any thoughts in general about seeking approval from your organization. We also intend to seek consideration of support from the Avondale Civic Association when they meet next in March. Thank you, Avondale Civic invited him to present at their March 3 business meeting I really like this idea.
  17. The Montrose Management District presented their plan for special parking last week to the planning commission. Avondale Civic is within the eastern part of the proposed plan and requested a spokesperson to give a presentation with short Q&A afterward at their March business meeting. Didn't know if anyone had an interest but it's an open meeting March 3, upstairs The Women's Home 607 Westheimer 7 pm
  18. I have just about given up on late Nite Pie changing at all..... If you call in about the Grafiti COH complains that the murky title makes it hard to pin down a responsible person to force to paint over the grafit---plus Irwin from FBar tells anyone and everyone he's been trying to buy that property for years.

  20. I was looking around and found this: http://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/09-18-15-landlord-seeks-ambitious-restaurateur-to-give-life-to-historic-midtown-home-1/ I have doubts about any restaurant or bar getting enough parking ( the new Montrose Management Parking district doesn't extend that far) to secure a liquor license though....... the rumor around Avondale is that it will probably end up as a Real Estate office-
  21. From their Facebook page Biskit Junkie December 11, 2015 · Houston · Biskit Junkie Oak Forest will be permanently closing today. We enjoyed all those who helped get it off the ground but we're excited to be moving into our larger more spacious home in Montrose. Oak Forest location served its purpose well as a test sight and test kitchen. Our new home will feature a much more diverse robust menu and full coffee program. We cant wait to see you again next Month!!! I can remember Eating at Mangos when it was more of a restaurant and less a performance venue---
  22. 24. Today's chronicle HOUSTON Free Access View Teen certified to stand trial as adult in Midtown slaying Judge cites lack of empathy for victim in Midtown altercation By Daniel PérezOctober 21, 2015 Updated: October 21, 2015 7:46pm A Houston teenager who has been in and out of criminal rehabilitation institutions has been certified to stand trial as an adult in the slaying of a man in Midtown earlier this year. Alferis Coby was 15 when he shot 22-year-old Juan Carlos Ramirez, killing him, in the parking lot of the F Bar near Helena, then stole a car belonging to the woman he was with, Houston police said. Ramirez was the second man Coby is accused of shooting in that parking lot on March 12. The first man survived. State District Judge Michael Schneider cited those incidents, and others, in his decision on Oct. 13 to certify Coby as an adult. Coby, now 16, is charged with capital murder.
