  1. Where exactly was it located? I saw it on one of these boards but have not been able to find it.
  2. Yes the inside area is beautiful. Not the rooms per se as they have undergone renovation twice over the years.
  3. Today we found out that the last day to live in the Downtown YMCA is going to be at the end of June 2010. There is a new one being built near Main in Midtown that may or may not have housing. This building is historic. Hiow do I go about saving it?
  4. Magnolia Park on the East Side was majority hispanic when it was incorperated.
  5. One day someone is going to come along and renovate the apartments and triple the rent.
  6. I bet someone has mentioned this but was there not a a big dlide on Alameda?
  7. Root Square was once the site of a hugh mansion owned by the Root family of Brown and Root fasme.
  8. Am I wrong or did Jackson start out a HS and become a Jr. High when RHS was built?
  9. I graduated Brazoswod in 1979. When my family moved to the Brazosport area in 1969 a person still had to go to Freeport to get many items. In Clute the Old wooden Reck's store was still being used but they had just layed out the plans for the one now in use. Clute at one time had a theater but it was torn down years before I moved there. I was told that Freeport during it's boom had three four theaters. I went to the Velaso once but to the Lake all the time in Lake Jackson. The Brazos Mall was supposed to be in Clute on Dixie Drive.
  10. Where was thsi school located. I have seen it mentioned in a book and on a website.
  11. Albert Sidney Johnston was a Condederat General killed at Shiloh. A newer school bearing his name was built in Southwest Houston. I do not know which Miller the older school was renamed for. but since I can not find a Miller Jr. High or Middle Schol it must have been closded and demolished.
  12. I have been reading the Booj Houston, The Forgotten City and trying to locate the location for the first campus of ASJ Jr. High which bcame Miller Jr. High.
  13. Yesterday I went for a walk down Auston Street and saw an interesting set of apartments across from the park. It was hard to see the names of these two. Anyone know what they are called?
  14. The on On Main by the Bus Station. I walked around it yesterday and it is called 2016 Main Bulding. It looks like apartments higher up.
  15. Where is the location of the Old Charlotte Allenn school?
  16. I went for a long walk yesterday from what I could tel Catholic Charities is located on the old Fanin school location.
  17. The Bu8ff's would draw 25,000 fans at West End Park according to the boo Houston, The Forgotten City. It makes one think that had The Astrodome been Downtown or has retractable roofs been an option would teh crowds have been better in the 70's and 80's.
  18. Yesterday I went for a long walk from my bearings the location of the second St. Thomas HS is now the La Branch Federal Building.
  19. This building has a lot of lawyer's offices on the ground floor. Was it a hotel at one time? I think it had a bar or comedy club as a tenent at one time. I think the building has a clever name now.
  20. Houston at one time was 70% white and anyone would have bet that blacks would have became the majority in the future but the hispanic population exploded. Davis HS used to be white as well as Sam Houston. What changed the cities demogaphis was a little noticed ruling by then AG Mark White whic declared singles only apartmant complexs to be against the law. This opened up southwest and west houston apartments to minorities. and lower income whites. The vast majority of the newcomers were hard working folk. Once again whites headed further west and into other counties. The reason why the area south of 610 will not be developed is unless it grows so fast with moderate to expensive houses and warents another HISD hs then most of the parents no matter what their color will not sned their children to precieved inferior schools.
  21. What gripes my cookies is that Kroger has a two track mentality. One for The Signature stores and one for the other Krogers. At the Montrose and West Gray and I am sure other locations the sliced meat in the deli is very expensive compared to the other Krogers. I live downtown at the Y and ride teh bus therefore these are the two closest stores of any chain to me.
  22. This must not be owned by the city since it is not listed as municipal art. Maybe the owners of the Savoy own it or it maybe owned by the bank that used to have a drive through there.
  23. Thank You. There is an even older location for St. Agnes on Fanin near the 1910 Courthouse. I used to live in the 1300 block of Truxillo so the location of the Beautiful School in the pic must have been very close to there.
  24. No they would build another one a few blocks south. There are a few large tracts of land in Midtown and I have been told they own one of them just not sure which one.
