  1. It's funny hearing "sketchy" in relation to the poor areas of town. In all honesty, there is nothing dangerous about those parts of town. I grew up there. There are drugs, and homes in poor condition, but rarely any violent crime. In Galveston's case, perception far exceeds reality. The fact of the matter is that the island is so small, you can't get away with much. Now, the stuff that I see happening on Channel 13 news in Houston......
  2. Yep, the one and the same... http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=450725

  5. Yeah, it was the taxes. She looked for another home on the island, but she could get something twice as nice on the mainland just 15 mins away for the same price. My mom would look at house prices in Galveston and would really be surprised. Her favorite quote would be, "I remember when they couldn't give that house away". The funny thing is that her ENTIRE neighborhood is from Galveston. They commute to work each day to the island, then back home.
  6. The Galveston County Daily News' editor recently gave his opinion on the cost of living in Galveston also... Link How has other "tourist towns" dealt with situations where the rich (among other factors) have driven out the middle class? My Mother reluctantly left the island three months ago, and moved to Texas City because of this very reason. 52 years on the island, and now the closest she can get is a glimpse from across the bay.
  7. Yeah, I saw that about two weeks ago when the Daily News did a story on the market. I thought, "We're famous"!! LOL
  8. This is from the Beachtown site's news section; Upcoming News Thursday, February 1, 2007 The next edition of Beachtown Town News is scheduled to be released on February 14th 2007. I guess you might want to check on Valentines day!
  9. Feb. 9th 08:08 PM in Buzz Flat-out interesting Posted by Laura Elder Should we file this under “P” for preposterous? Around the holidays, a rumor was floating that the Royal Family of Dubai was planning to buy roughly 600 acres known as the East End flats in Galveston. What I dismissed as rumor went something like this: Members of the royal family wanted to go where no developer had gone before, investing millions and millions of dirhams just to stabilize land long used for dredge spoils. The plan? Build a waterfront residential project massive enough to house 80,000 people. About 60,000 now call Galveston home, in case you're missing just what “massive” means. Perhaps I was too hasty in dismissing the rumor. City officials recently dispatched requests for information from potential developers. In Thursday's city council meeting, Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas said the city had received encouraging interest from developers, including some from Dubai. Dubai's royal family has been in a $3 billion hotel-buying spree in the United States, according to reports. Apparently, money is no object for Dubai's ruling family. Members also have snapped up trophy properties around the United States. Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf. Stay tuned. http://galvestondailynews.com/blog.lasso?b...be34d234d8cd34f

  11. I can believe it. In high school I was a lifeguard at this public pool (Sanders Pool) in Texas City for three years, and three or four times a summer we'd close because of air quality issues. This is the park that sits adjacent to the pool
  12. Crime Stats for Galveston vs Atlantic City They are very similar
  13. None taken, I actually found your bluntness quite humorous.
  14. How does the city of Atlantic City compare to Galveston (tourist's perspective)?
  15. I was thinking the same. Does Galveston have the potential become "the" gambling spot on the Gulf, even larger than New Orleans?
  16. It's actually a lot. The issue is not the terminal, but how the Brown family will be compensated (the family who owns the land). More recently, the city council has objected to this spot because the company conducting the feasibility study has suggested that 25th be closed to traffic. It is the lot on the left in the pic below (its the only pic I could find online)...
