I agree 100% about the seats.

The facade is where majority of the work is needed. Extend the facade closer to the street on both Polk and La Branch with a more modern look and materials. I’d like to see it squared off similar to Little Caesars arena in Detroit.

I would love to see them do something with the exterior as well!!!!

Would be a good time to start on that “major overhaul” that Tilman mentioned in 18”

    Nice!

They need to rip those maroon seats out and go black and give the arena a Staples Center and Madison Square Garden feel by dimming the lights.

How will the SE Corner of Downtown ever develop losing this half of a lot to storage for the near future?

Yeah, it's not the best, but it's also something. There's a lot of nothing in this area. If there wasn't demand for storage, then they would probably have done something else with their $10 million.

I agree there will be plenty of blocks to add something significant just give it time.

UHD used to own the jail building. It was vacant for a while because it needed a lot of repairs. UHD figured it would be cheaper to build a new building than repair that one, so they sold it and built the Academic building. The 701 San Jacinto Jail building was also owned by a company called the Houston Terminal Warehouse and cold Storage company.

Also, there was talk of changing the name of the University for over 20 years now. Allen University and City University were major contenders.

One of the higher ups said that although they wanted a new name, most of the push for the name changed was from the main campus and board of regents. Seems UHD was in their opinion a detractor from what they saw the UH brand as.

I think they should change the name to Allen State University.

A bit off subject but related... What happened to the giant rings with the street names that used to hang at the Post Oak/Galleria area intersections. They were removed before the reconstruction for the bus rapid transit. Is there a plan to bring them back? They were a classy part of the area and tied in with all of the other metallic elements along Post Oak.

Oh, wow.  I didn't even know those were taken out.  I haven't made it out to the Galleria area yet.  So sad; they were iconic.  People I met across the country knew about them.  Not regular people.  Architecture enthusiasts.  But still, people.

I've been wondering the same thing. I think they will eventually go back up but don't know when.

I couldn't agree more. Something that should be a major feature of the city just looks like a massive embarrassment. It bums me out every time I drive down 59 at night, they just look so janky. If the Montrose Management District still existed, I'd say they should sue for their money back from the company that installed them. They worked for barely a week after the Super Bowl, and then barely a week again after what seemed like a push to fix them a few months later. Some of the bridges have literally one or two working lights left on them.

    They didn't even work then!
