  1. I would wager that half the Houston population or more has never been through a direct hit.

i'd have to agree. i just hope everyone got plenty of cash and other reserves. seems like the east side bayous/streams are rising. i heard that brays bayou at mason park is way higher than normal.

  2. Nah, cool front coming after we get our asses kicked by Ike. It'll be positively heavenly here next week. :D

not sure i'd be using the word heaven at this point however any relief would be appreciated.

  3. I really hate to see this thing coming. I just don't want the Houston/Galveston area turning into the next New Orleans (Katrina). I just hope by monday stuff will be pretty much back to normal.

guess you weren't around during alicia

  4. 10 pm NOAA info is out. Storm tracker has moved it every so slightly to the East. I don't want to wish this storm on anyone, but if it were to continue on the more Easterly track....

my fingers are crossed. 13 had it as a cat 2 which is also good.

  5. Yes, we are running out of time, and we still haven't left yet. A lot of our neighbors aren't going, and we honestly can't decide what to do. We have reservations at a hotel in College Station, but then they said that they are expecting hurricane conditions on Saturday, as well.

74 miles/hr is a LOT different that 120 miles/hr. it's all about minimizing your risk.

  6. Even if I was able to get the plywood to board up my windows, I can't think of any reasonable way to put a board a 6x6 window on the third floor.

you could hammer it in from the inside and get some contents protection but window itself could be damaged.

  7. It could well be that at high traffic periods the number of cars and their slow speeds mean that synchronization hits a physical constraint and simply won't work. I think even at low traffic times it is difficult to pull off well due to the number of variables in traffic flow.

the downtown wasn't all sync'd up. this is particularly noticable on pease, st jo and pierce, west of main. you can drive on st jo and when you go west of main it just doesn't work but up until that point, it's fairly effective.

  8. There are a couple of Eastwooders here on haif...not sure where people are. I've spoken to my neighbors and (for now) those of us near the intersection of Walker and Eddington are staying put. I am, for sure. Damn, I went to Specs today and we've already put away half a fifth of vodka. So much for the storm rations. Back on topic, if you're nearby and in need, we will do as much as we can for ya! Note: We do not have a chain saw. We are fairly heavily armed and have shortwave, police scanner and bicycles--always good if trees go down.

    sarah is that you?

  9. Hey we are leaving the west end of Galveston. Does anyone know any websites/phone numbers to Hunstville Shelters?

    (plz reply quickly :()

    Thanks.

The Walker County Emergency Operation Center will operate full-time through the conclusion of the storm.

For more information, the center may be reached at (936) 435-2400.

  10. they had an afternoon meeting at the space center and mgmt there was told (by weather personnel) that JSC will experience hurricane force winds and the storm surge in galveston will be 8-12 ft. the guard is setting up along 45N in the huntsville area according to coworker evacuating to dallas. said it looked as if they were preparing for contraflow lanes.

  11. The city of Houston has put its downtown convention center hotel, the Hilton Americas-Houston, up for sale, officials announced this morning.

"We do believe there can be significant interest in this property at a very good price," said Mayor Bill White.

An offering memorandum placing the hotel on the market was issued today by CBRE/Concordis Real Estate. Hilton is the operator of the hotel, located across the street from the George R. Brown Convention Center.

White told City Council he personally would be involved in sale negotiations and that he had a "reserve price" in mind that he would not share with anyone.

"If we don't think there is adequate interest, we're not going to sell it," White said.

  12. We are in the process of a kitchen remodel, and purchased an electric 27" oven to replace our existing 24" gas wall oven. We couldn't find many gas options available in the 27" size, so we are having to switch to electric.

Problem: We have a 110V line behind the existing gas oven now, but need a 220V for the new electric oven. Is this something that can easily be done ourselves (if so -how), or will we need to hire an electrician? If we do need to hire an electrician, does anyone know how much this would cost, or have a recommendation of someone reputable/affordable that we could work with? We live in the Spring area.

it's not difficult if you are somewhat electrical saavy. just make sure you have the slot(s) avail for the double pole circuit breaker, otherwise it's a bigger job cause you'll need sub breaker box (or some other means) to hook it up.

  13. (2) Outside of deed restriction rules (which we need to investigate), is anyone aware of city rules against these? We would keep the concrete from the sidewalk to the street, but everything back to the detached garage would be an alternative substance.

it is ok to use the gravel. just remember, that the gravel does have a tendency to get stuck in shoes and tracked inside. not good if you have wood floors. landscapers are the ones who usually do the installation.

  14. Think "New York," and you picture the Empire State Building. Think "Washington," and there's the White House, the National Mall and all those memorials. San Francisco? The Golden Gate Bridge. St. Louis? The Arch. San Antonio? The River Walk, the Alamo. Austin? The pink-granite state Capitol.

But think "Houston," and what do you see?

    What are our icons?

    What defines us?

    What do we love?

    Those are surprisingly tough questions.

And they're important. When we think about our icons

  15. Why should Oprah take Palin on her show?

Isn't this a FREE country? Isn't Oprah just an entertainment show? It's not like Oprah is "Meet the Press."

And, maybe Oprah IS PROMOTING THE BETTERMENT OF WOMEN by not having Palin on the show. After all, Palin is against the notion of equal pay for equal work. Palin is also against the right to choose even in instances of rape/incest. Palin is also notoriously against birth control.
