LOL. You sound like one of my best friends that goes to Larry's every week. My wife and I have been there but have never understood the fascination with the place or of the popular Lopez near the Meadows. Neither have bad Tex-mex but nothing to write home about and their margaritas are terrible. Much better places exist but I know everybody's tastes are different.
larry's and Lopez's are completely different styles of food not sure of the facination you've mentioned. larry's doesn't put canned chili on their enchiladas. Clearly roasted meat is their norm. please go to El real and report back. You'll discover what bad tex mex is.

You're kidding right? Heard of Ninfa Laurenzo?Back in the main dining room, there's big historic photo panels on the wall. I'm not sure who the pictures are of.

My admin went last night and gave me the following report this morning on one of the combo plates: rice: awful and lumpy, refritos good, chile gravy good, tamale filling tasted of allspice (which she really harped on for a place calling itself tex mex) no onions in the cheese enchiladas (I'm with her there- if it's real there should be onions, dangit), and the plate was totally congealed right after it hit her table.Overall, she said it was some of the worst she's had in a while.
I'm going to wait a bit, but still definitely go, if for no other reason than the puffy taco. Man, I miss me some real San Antonio puffy tacos. I wonder is they do a old-schooly chile relleno with cheese?
Hola! I will have to steer you away from this place. I also went last week. It was bad. To be honest, there wasn't anything that was good.
The rice had no flavor. The salsa had zero kick. I ordered the puffy tacos and the cheese enchiladas. The puffy tacos were not cooked thoroughly. The taco ended up falling apart after a couple of bites. The meat tasted like canned chili, loaded with salt. The cheese enchiladas also contained the chili.
I had a flashback to eating a tv dinner cheese enchilada.
If anyone is looking for old time Tex Mex go to Larry's Mexican Restaurant in Richmond. Been there for decades. Look for the Felix inspired sign.

So ICON is going into bankruptcy and Cielo is also dying. Downtown is sure dying.

Had my first El Rey today... grilled shrimp tacos were mucho bueno.
Why do people like packaged tortillas cooked improperly?

What's the latest with the muggings while residents are walking their dogs/babies in walkers near Studewood? I know of 3 but my cousin says she's surprised it hasn't been on the news yet.

The study commissioned by former Mayor Bill White (done by Rice U's Bob Stein) said red light cameras resulted in more accidents. City was more than happy to sweep it under the rug.

It's not about rents. The city requires ground-level retail in all buildings, so there's scads of cheap cheap retail.
If retail was that cheap, more people would take the time to invest. There are numerous retail fronts that have been empty for years because prices are too high relatively. Downtown is unfortunately going back down because the club venues have left which actually drew non-residents in. Businesses are doing special deals or holding special events to draw NEW customers.

Yeah, you should try it again. Restaurant.com sells give certs to Hearsay.
A coupon won't help. $13 for a gin gin mule is ridiculous. Many of their drinks have low pours like Anvil. The food is just average. Bottled, bland sauces on their shrimp cocktail is just a ripoff. Other downtown residents that frequent the place have seen a decline in the quality. Since I never liked it in the first place it just confirms my initial thoughts.

I've been to Grand Prize recently (formerly, Ernie's on Banks) and liked it a lot. Nouveau Antique Art Bar on Main in Midtown is another good one. I tend to be overserved at Warren's on Market Square, but I'm cool with that.
Grand Prize service was mediocre which was a turn off.

I don't even really know where to start.
still surprises that rich's closed and this is it moved from midtown. the drive down san jacinto sure changed coming home from med center the other week. momentum went to washington clearly.

Seems the former weatherman passed away from cancer.

The Angelika was about revitalization and pulling in people that seek out the type of movies they show. There were people from Beaumont, Cypress, Sugarland, Lufkin, etc. who would come from all directions...
evidently not enough.

Basically most of what you said is false. Very very false.
what are you attempting to refute without offering any supporting information?

having 5 police officers guarding a lady walking her dog this evening was interesting. with the street people stealing all the lights on the fountains on preston and congress, it must call for increased police presence. they've also added additional commercial parking so less parking for the avg joe.

what will METRO do since they are having problem with this hump? raising rates with no constraints will sure lower ridership.

What madness is occurring? The elections are in November.

Everything at Thiem Hung rocks. I had the chicken curry on Friday and it was amazing. The weekly dinner specials are always awesome.
certain things there are great, everything isn't. don't get me started on their weak eggrolls.

METRO's tax income has faded which is contributing to their proposed delays on rail lines in work.

Seems Angelica Theater is now closed permanently. I guess the A/C problems they were having are just a tell tale sign.
oops sorry for repeat.

I second that. One more caveat, they must also construct an urban store that is green and pedestrian, maybe part of a TOD for the Inner Katy Line. Design is my biggest issue in my book.
Sounds like the architects are loving the design but the residents aren't.

I never knew they were ever here. I saw but never ate at one in California. I doubt I will if/when they come as I've only eaten at James Coney Island like once or twice in my whole life.
you're too young so don't try and lead a discussion on this subject.

El Bolillo fits the bakery bill, although I would like more yeast breads and croissants in the area.
so it doesn't fit he bill. and the taco place sure doesn't either. kind of embarassing that Heights residents support them so much. seems no sense is involved.

If they are claiming to be real tex mex, the pralines would be part of the meal. One of the bar regulars where I frequent has been working there for the past month. Seems the complaints are pouring in and management in trying to react. The yelp complaints that are being filtered are just killing them.
