  1. DART isn't doing anything for Dallas.... their ridership is nearly the same as 6 years ago and carry about ~210,000 people a day on bus, LRT, and heavy rail for the entire service area. Get a clue.
  2. No it doesn't mean it, but you are sure more likely to have a better school with better students. I think UH needs to work towards shedding the Cougar High label and be more of a traditional university. The city, the students, and university will benefit from moving away from a commuter campus. I certainly don't think this should happen at the expense of the education. I didn't go to UH, I'm an outsider but I know lots of UH alumni and they pretty much sum up the place being somewhere you can a good education for a good price. It was sort of a bare bones experience for them, even those who did the frat thing.
  3. Is there not a middle ground between making investments in "lifestyle amenities" and improving the educational quality of the university? You seem to only deal in absolutes, only the Sith deal in absolutes. That was my first Star Wars reference and will be my last (although a reference from the mediocre Star Wars). I don't think it was a suggestion to follow UT, but to get some of the quality of students UT gets. Texas as a whole doesn't seem to regard education as important unfortunately, and our public schools (grade school and universities) suffer from it.
  4. It would result result in fewer students and less revenue? Do you think raising the acceptance standards incrementally would cause an enrollment drop off and therefore a revenue loss? I never mentioned how acceptance standards raised and you started to jump to conclusions. Furthermore, how would improving education not raise the university's expenses and potentially cause a tuition hike? And again tuition is going up nationwide.
  5. Perhaps you should compare the average SAT scores of students admitted to UH against some of those in your links. UH has a high acceptance rate and average SAT requirement for Texas school, which has an average SAT score due to Texas's mediocre education system (in general). I'm not knocking UH, but I think it would be better served to raise it's acceptance requirements. Some of the students at UH would probably be better served at community colleges . This would skew the socioeconomic demographics of UH slightly, but it would more than likely help UH out in the long run.
  6. It is perplexing that the lines that are least tied to our LRT's success have secured funding, while the lines that will be the most important are uncertain and haven't broken ground. I support the LRT expansion in its concept, but this has definitely confused in the priority of funding. Perhaps someone could explain this financial dubiousness.
  7. My two cents: It would seem wealthier students perform better academically and are demographic that UH needs to draw away from schools such as UT, A&M, and Tech. It seems that particular demographic is essential to UH (among other factors) to becoming a more reputable and better academic school. That is not to say lower income students aren't as hard working or less prepared, as I know many that have a certain work ethic that is due to the fact they want better than what they grew up with. However, community colleges are becoming increasingly popular and increasingly more reputable. I don't think UH setting the bar higher financially and academically is a bad thing because having a degree from a community college and university is becoming blurred in many profession. Furthermore, I would say that some professions are better suited for people that go to community college or that go to a university. As Niche mentioned, tuition rates are going up across the board. In fact compared to the big boys of Texas, it is a modest amount.
  8. I work for the HEB at Buffalo Spdwy in the pharmacy and actually talked our unit director about the plans for this Montrose HEB. She said no time table was set, but an opening in late 2011 was her guess. She expected that this HEB would adapt to the neighborhood but really gave no concise information on it, it seemed because HEB itself is still in the very early planning stages. My two cents: HEB has shown that it very much focuses on the demographics of the area and tailors the store to it. That's not to say this store will be an "urban" store. I know that the Buffalo store would love to bulldoze the bank and Buffalo grill to have the extra parking space. I wouldn't expect this Montrose store to be anything but a large store (not big box) with lots of surface parking. However, I feel they would try and retain as many of the trees as possible and the building itself to use a lot of natural lighting (lots of glass) and be made of recycled products, like the shipping containers and polished concrete floors (like the Buffalo Spdwy). Hopefully the community can persuade them to include more features that reflect Montrose because HEB really does listen to the customers.
  9. That's a shame. Missing out on some good food and drink.
  10. Has anyone determined where the parking is? There is still a lot of land on the lot but I can't see that being used for surface parking. Maybe a two story parking structure?
  11. It's a coin toss really. We are 2 games out of being in top 8 seed for playoffs. We lose our main bench scorer and 4th quarter scorer, but Kevin Martin could easily make our starting unit more potent and pick up the slack.
  12. Yep Andover, they seem like good people so far. There is barely any noise where I live but the units themselves are from an older era, which isn't a problem necessarily. I could only describe this complex as a garden complex as basically where there isn't buildngs there are mature trees and tropical plants. I've been nothing but satisfied with my decision to live here and the area.
  13. I decided on a different apartment in Montrose than I first inquired about. I've been living about half a month at an apartment complex off Richmond near Yoakum (1301 Richmond), basically across the street from St Thomas. I love the area and do enjoy living close to many amenities. I occasionally walk places, mostly to the Walgreens (maybe it's a CVS) at Richmond and Montrose, but there's so much to do. I do like to jog, and grown to love jogging through the neighborhoods and am only about a mile from Hermann and the Museum District. It's been great weather as of late so I've done lots of exploring on foot. I'm really glad I made the decision to live here.
  14. Title basically sums it up, need to decorate my apartment with something. I live in Montrose and need a place reasonably close by and was hoping some outstanding HAIRers would know of some places.
  15. Those grackles are nuts, it's amusing to watch the turf wars that occur on those big powerlines along Westpark inside the loop.
  16. So how about them Astros? Spring training starting up soon.
  17. Yea I was thinking about where the parking structure would be after looking at the recent pic taken. Does anyone know how much parking hotels require? Like would they need 1 parking space per room or maybe 1 per every 2 rooms? 3 rooms?
  18. I'm about to move to the Montrose area and work in the Greenway area and was looking at alternative means of transportation (bus and bike). Can anyone suggest a good place to go to buy a bike and accessories and is very knowledgeable. When i lived in San Marcos I would go "mountain" biking around the area but I was never an expect on the details and don't have that bike anymore. I would assume a different type of bike would be necessary for commuting.
  19. Seems to me he was giving his opinion on the matter, why the sarcasm?
  20. I stayed in the Hotel Sorella for a night with my girlfriend on a Thursday night. It really was a nice a hotel and a great area to spend an evening. We walked over to Escalantes for dinner and spent the rest of the evening at Yardhouse, RA, and the MonaLisa (bar in the hotel). It was very packed for a Thursday night and everywhere we went was a good time. I would highly recommend it for a couple for a one night "vacation" or with some friends.
  21. Not to mention the number of major apartment complexes that are/have opened in the vicinity of West Ave, I can think of 5.
  22. My predominately hispanic girlfriend makes a kick ass margarita on the rocks. Cheers.
  23. Yes, I don't want to live in an area full of the same type of people. Hysterical.
  24. Looks like I'm going to go for it. Thanks for the input everyone.
