  1. 5/13 reviewers on citysearch said it was one of the worst dining experiences they have ever had (which isn't a very good percentage)... although 6/13 were very good reviews (although I always wonder if gushing reviews are written by people affiliated with the establishment).
  2. So is Metro's Intermodal Terminal definitely being put on hold? It seems like it would be an ideal way to link commuter rail into downtown, in addition to spurring development in that part of downtown.
  3. All the reviews for The Grove I have seen online have been pretty luke-warm/bad... has anyone gone and had a good experience? Does it take time for a restaurant to get its groove? How expensive is it?
  4. Off-topic, but my gf and I went to Julia's last weekend... the food and the service were awesome. This little block is pretty neat, I don't understand why the areas around it haven't developed at all.
  5. What does 95% of capacity mean exactly? I am amazed at how many riders are on the train at 5 AM (frequently standing-room only)... seems like a huge number of TMC construction workers ride the train from downtown.
  6. I currently live 3 blocks away from Ensemble/HCC, ride the Red Line to TMC everyday and love it... the people the rail stops attract in Midtown never bother me one bit.
  7. I agree... but at the same time it would be nice to have a skyline-defining, modern supertall on the east side. Here is Philly's: http://www.acctower.com/
  8. Yea, I have often wondered how the areas surrounding the McGowen stop (huge open field South of the Cadilac dealership) and the Ensemble/HCC stop (3 blocks of surface lots) have not been developed... Just landowners willing to sit on their investment I guess. It seems crazy. Maybe the proposed Camden development on Travis, South of Reef will kick-start the area around the McGowen stop.
  9. It all depends on what you're looking for... compact vs DSLR? Price range? I am a Canon fan personally. I have had a 20D and a Powershot s70 for a few years and am really happy with both. If you are considering DSLR (a huge upgrade in image quality), Canon is for sure the class act (in terms of camera body and available lens quality)... but they are not compact and cost much more. As for point-and-shoot, there are 100s of good options from any number of companies. Do not get wrapped up in megapixels... they don't matter beyond about 5. Lens and censor quality is where the money is. Check out this website for exhaustive reviews of any camera you would want: http://www.dpreview.com/
  10. Thats pretty lame to put those big banners up a year before the developer is considering building...
  11. It's real brick... with white stucco-like accents. I didn't realize both upper levels would be 24 hour fitness until today's Chronicle article... how are they going to put a pool on an upper level? Personally, I was hoping for more retail... hopefully they get some good tennants for the first floor. EDIT: Actually from Feb 22, posted today in "The Mix" thread: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/busine...ff/5563952.html
  12. Well Jobs is a vegan, so it must be hard to keep the weight up.
  13. The city is considering selling Hilton America's in part to help finance another convention hotel, in todays Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/5599859.html Mayor Bill White said he thought the city could get more than $350 million for the hotel, which would enable it to pay off its debt and create more financial flexibility to undertake another project. They discuss placing the new hotel opposite of Hilton... which I assume means next to Discovery Tower north of DG. Pretty interesting.
  14. It is true the Mavs have owned us for a while. But last night's game was awesome... I'm loving the up-tempo play sans Yao Ming (of course I wish we still had Yao though). Landry/Scola are just awesome players... they are making Morey look as brilliant as everyone thinks he is...
  15. While pancreatic cancer is generally a terminal diagnosis, there are certain types of tumors that are resectable. Steve Jobs recently announced that he had a pancreatic tumor resected with a good prognosis. However, if they are not planning on surgery because the tumor is not resectable, then prognosis is generally 10-12 months or less.
  16. Wow... This story is kind of sad. On one level I think a park in BLVD would be a nice addition. On another, it seems the brothers are the victim of a government screw-job. They bought the property in 1982 for $360K. The city offers them $398 in 2004. Wulfe $1.4 mil in 2006. The city $433 in 2007. Something doesn't seem right.
  17. You are saying the NY subway is cleaner and has less low-life's relative to the Underground?
  18. I think it's nice but not overly exciting... but I think I would only get overly excited if it was >40 floors.
  19. I much prefer London to New York. As an aside, I'd like to add that the Underground is a true modern marvel (and MUCH cleaner than NY subways).
  20. I definitely don't think your characterization of him as an "instant snitch" is fitting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_mccain#Prisoner_of_war In July 1968, McCain's father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater.[3] McCain was immediately offered a chance to return home early:[32] the North Vietnamese wanted a worldwide propaganda coup by appearing merciful, and also wanted to show other POWs that elites like McCain were willing to be treated preferentially.[37] McCain turned down the offer of repatriation; he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.[43] McCain's refusal to be released was even remarked upon by North Vietnamese senior negotiator Le Duc Tho to U.S. envoy Averell Harriman during the ongoing Paris Peace Talks.[44] In August of 1968, a program of severe torture methods began on McCain, using rope bindings into painful positions, and beatings every two hours, at the same time as he was suffering from dysentery.[37][32] McCain made an anti-American propaganda "confession" that said he was a "black criminal" and an "air pirate".[32] He has always felt that his statement was dishonorable,[45] but as he would later write, "I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine."[37] His injuries left him permanently incapable of raising his arms above his head.[46]
  21. I've often wondered why The History Channel is in the business of producing bogus pieces on these "outlandish" topics... From extra-terrestrials/UFO's to Nostradamus's prophecies. And they always seem to go out of their way to give validity to the bogus viewpoint. Not exactly a credible organization IMO.
  22. But they re-did the website less than 2 years ago to make it uglier than ever... So this argument doesn't quite make sense. I want clean lines, less terrible orange color, subheads on major stories, less obtrusive advertising, etc. But to be honest I don't really trust the Chronicle editorial board to bring about these changes.
  23. I really dislike chron.com. I think the layout is hideous, the colors are terrible, and the journalism is amateurish. The actual paper isn't as bad in terms of layout/design. I have sent them emails letting them know their website is totally outdated and ugly, but I don't think they are listening to me. It seems to me that as the fourth-largest city in the country we should have a decent daily newspaper. I personally rely on NYTimes.com and Washingtonpost.com for news, and the Chronicle for sports-related information only (although the sports writers don't seem to be the brightest tools in the shed based on their blogs).
  24. Nice article... Hospitality Apartments sounds like a really nice organization. I had never heard of them previously.
  25. Yea, I was speaking generally about the decreased regard for TMC's building explosion... obviously the Alkek expansion isn't as sexy as HP. But I do think there are some cool things going up in TMC that in a purely architectural sense are more interesting than some of the much discussed minor developments elsewhere. Like Texas Children's new buildings that will have the largest circular skywalk (over Fannin) in the world. Or the new Methodist research facility. Texas Children's Methodist Research Center And in a larger sense, just regarding Houston's perception on the national and international level the TMC developments are more important. I don't think I really appreciated just how huge this aspect of TMC is until I started rotating at MD Anderson (where every other patient is not from Texas). Thousands of patients from all over the world are coming to Houston -- staying, spending their money, looking around. Its a high exposure area. I definitely agree with The Niche about the demographics of the forum influencing interest. It's understandable... I just think it's interesting to see how little interest this stuff generates with HAIF.
