  1. Lock, I've always wondered about that too ... isn't it bordered by rail to the north though? Maybe that's why?

The space was formerly occupied by Cameron (for oil or chemical or something like that)...anyways the site would require a ton of prep and "decontamination" in order to build on it and although the government offers incentives for developers it's obviously too much of a hassle for anyone right now to have any interest in building there

  2. I have a family member who does business with Arne's. The last she had heard was that they are working with the insurance co. & contractors to reopen as quickly as possible but that this won't happen before the end of the year. The store itself wasn't damaged just the warehouse is what Arne's told her.

If you're driving towards I-10 on Studemont they've updated a billboard to the left of the road stating that "We miss you too" and "Reopening soon"

  3. I guess some people on here just love bitching about things. I'm thinking they would have been happier with the 3 boring parking lots that were there before.

I'm really dissappointed that they didn't include an indoor ski park in the plan like in Dubai :P Geeze Houston!

I think this is a great addition to the downtown area, I think in the next year after the economy swings up again we may have some exciting news as companies announce new stores for HP. I also think they were very creative with their common spaces in how the incorporated the drainage at an angle with built in seating and planters.

  4. I don't get it. Is it some conspiracy?

Naw it's just the owner displaying their beliefs in a non-"IN YOUR FACE" way - Also, if you think Forever 21 messed up by placing their flagship store in an area with the wrong demographics, you should think of telling all the people downtown with that same yellow bag that they're shopping in the wrong area :P

  5. I still think it's a great space - just wish they would have a broader selection...on another note, I noticed on the pavilions website that Lids isn't opening until next spring, but the store looks almost complete...do y'all think other stores could possibly be opening sooner than projected? - I would think they'd try their hardest to take advantage of the Christmas season

  6. My wife and I went milling about Houston Pavilions last Saturday. I thought that McCormick & Schmicks might be open.

But the feel and look of the place EXCEEDS what I saw in the renderings. It is a fantastic design. It's certainly different. Just like Horton Plaza in San Diego is different...Houston Pavilions is different. The view of the skycrapers is astounding.

I just can't wait for more shops to open there...getting more customers. There were some people at Books A Million that night.

My complaint is that the guard rails around the cross rings could be higher. It is so easy just to jump down on San Jac or Fannin from that...or be pushed over.

And parking could be at least 3 bucks instead of the 5 we paid that night. I personally don't mind paying 5...but I just want added incentive for more patronizing.

Houston Pavilions is the kind of place that can really attract regularly...I just can't get over how cool that design is.

Has anyone tried walking there from the Pavilions to about Main @ Capitol (or close to Sambuca)? What's the distance like? I know I could look that up on a map or something but would still want to know how someone else finds a stroll like that.

I wanted to stroll that but my wife was heavily disappointed that McCormick & Schmicks was not open and she was hungry (wound up going to La Strada in Montrose).

It's Doable - might not suggest it at night though - I work in first city tower and sometimes the coworkers want to go to Frank's Pizza which is pretty much the same distance...it's not too bad but you will feel like you just walked off your dinner, which is always good I suppose

  7. ah ok..that must be the opening party.

I don't think they're going to have an "opening party" per se for Cowboy Mouth, just a few nights of shows...and then the night of the Blues Brothers that your friend got tickets to will be the big celebration - I think most of the tickets were given away and then they auctioned off a few for a charity or something like that.

  8. not sure if anyone's said this already, but I think they should just turn it into the worlds largest parking garage, maybe with a few restaurants on the top level....at least then it would solve the parking problem and still look good from the outside.

  9. Here's a more recent list of tenents...just a few adds. Site map looks to be about 90% leased at this point.

If Academy is going in, they must be vacating their location near Voss/I-10...I liked that one as it was unique...and what's with the tenant list? Is this Katy?!?

  10. Yah, I'd never heard anything about the gap being exotic, but then I don't know - I'm relatively young. I do remember when Banana Republic sold safari clothes in the 80s, which was brought up in earlier posts, but I'd be curious to hear about the Gap before my time.

I think they just meant that it was exotic in that it was the only one in all of Houston. Maybe they'll be "exotic" again sometime soon if they don't get out of their slump.

  11. someone told me an Apple store is coming to downtown. This is the only place where i can see them opening up. any word?

I looked it up on the ifoapplestore.com(main rumor site) of any future Houston stores, and the only one coming up would be at Willowbrook Mall...if they can have one why can't downtown?!?...I think it would be a hit with all the convention visitors and business people downtown.
