  1. It's called Mainstage and I think they're already open at 2016 Main. Their website is leavetheboyfriendathome.com. I'm curious to if they have a dance floor and what kind of music they would play...

I got wind of a new club coming to Midtown. I'm not sure where or when, but was told that it will be a cross between Meteor and South Beach. That means dancing, a stage for shows and lounges. It is not a project by the owner of the previously mentioned venues. Can anyone think of an existing building that could be renovated to accomodate such a venue. Sorry for the vagueness, but that's all I have for now.

  2. Interesting point on this one. Personally, I like the "super-street"/expressway portion of Memorial. In fact, I wouldn't get rid of it--I would refresh it. To me, Memorial is one of the city's most signature drives, and a (long overdue) repaving coupled with improved bridgework, a simplification of the Waugh interchange (similar to the Shepherd interchange), a replacement of the chain-link fence median with something like wrought iron and stone, decorative lighting, more landscaping of overpasses and retaining walls (a la the Living Bridge in the park), and fresh updated signage would do wonders for Memorial. I know some hate to use other places as references, but Memorial (and Allen for that matter) should be our versions of the great parkways in DC and New York.

It just has a tired feel to it today. The 75th anniversary of Memorial's opening will be in 2031. Maybe something like this can be done by then??

Are cloverleaf interchanges that evil?!? I always prefer something like that over an interchange with lights. The only update I would possibly suggest is a dedicated lane on waugh for entrance and exit rather than trying to merge right after the cloverleaf turn (i.e. Memorial West to Waugh North).

  3. Today I had some trouble downtown. I took some clients to the Rockets game tonight which was excellent. Afterwards, we attempted to find a place to get drinks and a good meal at about 10pm downtown. Everything was either closed or closing except pubs that sell bar food. Ok no problem, I'll go somewhere else. One of the guys suggests sushi so I try and find a sushi place. I searched on my phone and called about 5 different sushi places, most were already closed, or closing by 10:30. The only one that stayed open till midnight was Ra. So we go to Ra, and order immediately because the kitchen closes at 11pm. Sushi is badass and the atmposhpere is good. The only thing that kind of sucked here was not that Downtown was closing early, I expected that. However, I didn't expect it to be so hard to find a sushi place open past 10pm on Monday night in Houston. I always thought of Houston as a pretty a busy city, even late in the evenings...

I'm not a sushi person, but my friends really like Zake...and they're open until 11:30 on weekdays.

  4. you have to admit, the place is going to have totally awesome coverage, depending on what service you use.

Overall, I think they did quite well building around it.

I definitely agree - even sans retail I think the place is an improvement nonetheless...now if the rent was just "slightly" lower I could move in :)

  5. There's been a sign up for a while that 24 hour fitness will be coming soon...but I can't find any info online. Does anyone have an idea when they plan to open?

This surprises me because I am/was a member and it was always crowded.

The building isn't in bad shape, but I have no idea what could possibly fill it now. Maybe a renovation would attract some commercial tenants, but there are much more attractive options in the area.

I hope it doesn't sit vacant for years, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

  6. I really like the proposed design, but I'm curious to know if the "bioswell" running down the middle would be create more of a breeding grounds for mosquitos than usual. I know we live in Houston and I should just deal with it, but definitely curious.

  7. I'm curious to see if the houses still stand almost 20 years later!

In a project management class I suffered through once, they showed a video (from 1983 or something) of 2 crews racing to build an entire house in the shortest time (they did it in 6 hours, foundation included). They had a project plan down to the minute for everything to get done by different crews. Anyway, the point is to build the roof, they put the entire roof frame together on the ground while the walls were getting done, then they lifted it on top. That probably wouldn't work if it's a custom non-uniform roof, but who knows. A crane would be really helpful to speed up lots of things like a'c install and just about any supplies that go above level 1.

  8. I also noticed that I could see them spinning last night when I was driving down the 45 home from Hobby. Pretty cool. Yeah it probably doesn't generate a significant amount of power but it looks pretty cool. I'd like to see the actual power generation numbers.

A comment on Swamplot put it at about 1%...definitely more for looks and PR than anything else.

  9. Well, most likely, if it's going on a lot sized for an HEB similar to the one on Buffalo Speedway, this lot will only be able to contain one of Walmart's high-end grocery concept stores. I doubt it'll bring in all the riff-raff associated with normal Walmarts.

are you saying all the people from www.peopleofwalmart.com are hiding at home?....just waiting for a walmart to be built near them so they can display all of their gloriousness?

  10. My wife is mega excited. She said Tuesday Morning is way better than Marshall's or TJ Maxx because it has the potential of real good deals on nice things as opposed to overstocked cheap junk. I think we got our crystal wine glasses from there.

Isn't there already a Tuesday Morning at Richmond and Shepherd/Greenbriar? I guess they're just moving it to a more visible location.

    Ha...was thinking Randall's at Shepherd and Westheimer....nevermind :P

  11. I've searched some, but could not find anything on this, but as I pass by it on my way in from Austin, I have to ask,

'Why is there an air traffic control tower on top on the new Memorial Hermann Hospital at Town & Country?'

At least that's what it looks like. Anyone know the story on the top of this hospital?

    http://www.houstonar...rmann-building/

Here's 10 pages of information for you. In a nutshell, the building is actually owned by Metronational and Memorial Hermann Leases levels 2-7 (the rest of the floors are medical office space or shell space for future tenant build-out. The crown houses the offices for Metronational...and you'd be surprised that the decor up there looks NOTHING like the building.
