  1. The Chicago Tribune has ZERO editorial influence on channel 39. Most of the people at the paper don't even know that 39 exists. Heck, the Tribune doesn't even exert editorial influence on co-owned WGN-TV which is just 13 miles away from the paper. The two entities are in very different branches of the company (Tribune Publishing vs. Tribune Broadcasting). The paper doesn't even mess with CLTV (24-hour cable news channel), which it owns, and is part of the publishing division, and is even located in a Tribune Publishing office building.

The same can be said for Belo. As much as I like to bash 11News, the Dallas Morning News has nothing to do whatsoever with its operation. As stated above, most local broadcasters don't have the time to think about stuff like that. They're just churning out the news so they can collect a paycheck and go home at the end of the day.

TV news sounds glamorous, but it's really very much like working in a plastic fork factory.

So true, if you watch your local news, they just regurgitate the news from the AP wires, etc.

  2. We didn't really deserve to win the game. We played 3 horrible quarters. Things will get better though. I really feel that this team would've gone 9-7 w/o all the major injuries this year. Oh well. I felt before the season started that we should've seeked a trade for Adrian Peterson by giving up Mario Williams. We should've at least given Dominick Davis a shot in training camp, but he wasn't even invited to camp.

  3. Because waving to other drivers isn't part of the traffic code. Yielding requirements are rule-driven, not an matter of courtesy. If you are at a stop sign first, or if you are on the right, then you have the right of way. It's not a politeness contest. It drives me nuts when drivers violate the rules in an attempt to be friendly and courteous. It is safer all around if people just go by the book.
Ok. My bad on terminology. When i say yielding, i meant when 3 lanes become 2 lanes and the sign says 'left lane ending', so if i let the guy in the left lane in to the right lane, i am yielding for him when he should've been in the right lane ahead of time before the lane was about to end. So if he waits until the last second to move to the right lane, he should thank me or whoever was in the right lane. There are other different situations.
I guess it should be considered courtesy for following the law. Drivers on the feeder roads never pay attention to those yield signs on their left and their right as the freeway offramp merges into their lanes.
Good point. I see this so many times.
  4. Why do alot of drivers here don't wave to thank other motorists yielding for them ? Houstonians keep bragging about how friendly and courteous they are, but they sure don't act like it. Oh...stop throwing things out of the car while driving when there are other cars behind you in the streets or highways. I don't care if it is a cigarette(use your ashtray),plastic cups, etc. or whatever, show some respect!!!

  5. I've noticed the traffic is even worse in the past 2 weeks when they actually widened the lanes between First colony before the Grand Parkway exit. It goes to 4 lanes after First Colony before going back to 2 lanes about a mile before the Grand Parkway exit. Isn't traffic suppose to be better? In the past with the construction, it has been 2 lanes and the traffic was at least moving smoother and faster, but with the temporary 4 lanes, it has gotten worse. F*** up big time!! Gee, i wonder when people start moving into the Telfair area, how much worse it will be. Bad times ahead!!

  6. We do not have another chance for years to come and I imagine more houstonians adapting to mass transit as we grow. I mean if we hosted the super bowl again this year think what out of towner's would think. H-TOWN changed alot with New freeways toll roads, and more light rail and brt stops. I believe we will have an extensive system(mass transit) by the time if we even our considered a finalist for Olympics. if ATL can do it we know Houston could do it.

During the Superbowl, many out of towners were willing to pay thousands of dollars to rent out apartments, condos, etc, near Reliant center because they knew traveling to the stadium would be a mess during the superbowl. My friend lives in an apartment complex near Reliant and told me during the superbowl week, Janet Jackson's posse lived in his complex. Jermaine Dupree was also living there. F few residents rented out their apartments for like 8-9k during the weekend.

  7. Obviously not.

I'm suggesting that the lack of an existing, substancial, mass transit system (rail) that could handle an influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors is one of the reasons this city is often overlooked.

I agree with you 100%. This is probably the real reason Houston will never get an Olympics game. Until they do, Houston can keep dreaming.
