  1. It is right off Broadway, which has several chain tourist restaurants. There was a HOB right next to it, but not sure if it's included in the development or if it's considered by itself.
  2. So completion by Spring 2011? I am sure they will push to finish by the time the Final Four gets here.
  3. Recently I was in San Diego and visited Horton (sp?) Plaza, which is basically their downtown version of the Pavilions. It was fully occupied. It had a Macy's, Abercrombie, Banana Republic, ice cream shop, etc. And still, it wasn't extremely exciting and I don't think HP ever will be, either. After one visit I never went back and instead spent time in the Gaslamp District and the Pacific Beach area. The only time I went back was when I needed to get a pullover from BR because it was chillier than expected at night, and the only reason I went to that one is because it was close to my hotel. My thoughts out of this whole experience were that the Pavilions are not going to be the destination people expected them to be. If they are ever able to climb over 50% occupied they will be a nice attraction for convention and business visitors from out of town. But even then, after one or two visits those people would realize that Midtown, Highland Village, Galleria, etc. have more to offer. Just my .02, none of which is groundbreaking insight.
  4. Well there's only one block left....although it's a pretty large block.
  5. I think Midtown will survive. The residential population alone will keep most Midtown bars alive, and it looks like more is being built. I think the overall gentrification of the inner loop won't let any of these nightlife areas go away anytime soon. I don't think the East End will take off as a new nightlife destination like a lot of people, though.
  6. There's really no point in getting worked up over the design. We probably won't see this for at least 5 years.
  7. The amusing part is that this complex's rents will probably be the high end of the Midtown apartment market, which is already ridiculously overpriced anyways.
  8. Minute Maid and Reliant are both world class sports facilities. Toyota Center isn't bad, either (although it is inferior to other new arenas I've been in). I guess the city is spoiled with its stadiums. Either way, I've significantly lost interest in the Dynamo Stadium. I guess it will be good for the East End.
  9. Well there is a trailer and a couple of a bulldozers on the site now. Along with a little gravel. They also put up a permanent wooden fence along Morningside. I don't know what any of this means.
  10. It's amusing that a lot of us got worked up over this stadium, and the owner is touting it as "nothing fancy". I mean, then why even do it? Just keep negotiating with U of H to play at Robertson.
  11. Another parking garage at a critical downtown intersection. Exciting.
  12. The Olympics are a totally different animal. Houston should not be pursuing them since it will just be a waste of time and energy. However, I think the city should continue to compete for Final Fours and Super Bowls, merely for the fact that we don't have a city-wide economic boost every year. The closest thing is the Rodeo, but that is all confined to Reliant Park and the HLSR. I'm not sure how much OTC does for the city, but I would imagine it pales in comparison to larger events that attract mass amounts of media and tourists.
  13. It just seems like a lot of money to implement a system that will be useful up until a point. I think there has to be some break-even point in Houston's future growth to where this becomes more of a burden than a benefit. If we have to continue to wait on funding delays as costs continue to rise, why not just ride it out until everyone agrees on a heavy rail system that will be sustainable over a century.
  14. The costs have risen significantly since first proposed and with all the funding delays there is no chance that we would have this built in 2013 or even 2014 for that matter. And honestly, I've been spending a lot of time in Atlanta and Dallas recently, and their systems would blow away our 20 mph train system that interacts with cars. I would rather keep formulating new ideas to improve the transportation system for the city that would be sustainable for the long term rather than put in what may just be a "nice to have" system that does nothing different than our regular city buses.
  15. 6 months ago I would have disagreed with you. Not now, though.
  16. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if the whole solutions plan got scrapped. Bring in some new people to start making smart decisions. The last couple of years have been a clusterf....
  17. I don't know, but I just hope it doesn't sit vacant for another decade.
  18. I just don't understand the business logic behind this or any other minor league park within the city limits. The only minor league team in the Houston area would have to be in one of the self-sustaining suburbs like The Woodlands or Sugar Land. I actually always thought Galveston would be a perfect place for a minor league team, drawing in not only local residents from the gulf coast area, but also a tourist draw from Houston residents. That was pre-Ike, though, and I don't know if that makes as much sense now.
  19. If he's saying that, then I think that is an even worse idea. Festivals and other similar cultural activities are not meant to be indoors. The return the city would get for the money we put into it would be nowhere near worth the investment.
  20. I don't know how much of a baseball town Dallas is. Adding a minor league team seems like bad business logic. The Rangers struggle to average 30k in attendance, and they are a much better product. Plus, Frisco is already the close minor league option. However, if this becomes the Rangers' AAA team and the Astros are able to keep Round Rock out of Ryan's hands, then I'm all for it.
  21. Restoring the dome to be used as a backup for weather conflicted festivals is a waste. Plus, who would really want to go to a festival inside the Astrodome? The best use for this is easily the studio idea.
  22. No Houston-Dallas connection is pretty weak
  23. Unless the grey parts are going to become high speed rail, I don't see this being that effective.
