  1. I have a compost bin in my backyard that I made from pallets. I try to get a 10 to 1 ratio of carbon (oak leaves) vs Nitrogen (grass clippings, coffee grounds, vegatable & fruit waste).

I've just started a new bin in which I'm going to attempt "hot composting". Supposedly, if done right, will give you a weed free compost with six weeks. One thing I've found though, is that you have to water, and turn the pile almost daily to get the proper tempurature. It's a lot of work.

  2. I meant you could have reasoned that since I was angry that they threw garbage out of the car, and since I got close enough to see that it was dirty kleenexes and coffee cups, that I most likely threw it away. To imply that I might have let it sit there and complain about it is insulting given the fact that I went to the trouble to write about it on here.

I'd appreciate it if you would stay out of this thread unless you have something constructive to add.

Jax, I for one appreciate your concern about littering in the area, especially seeing that your not a native. Some people are just pissed off as a way of life, and as a result inflict sarcasm constantly.

Anyway, as a musician that has traveled all over this country, I can say that there is no city as bad as Houston where littering is concerned. I've witnessed trash throwing as was mentioned, and I've come about two seconds from beating a guys face over it. Just talking about this ticks me off.

  3. Freedom rally? No thanks. I was born free.

So was I, but as a hand gun liscense holder, I'm scared to death what the current administration might do to my second ammendment rights. Maybe I'm jumping the gun (no pun intended), but I'm really concerned.

Note: please ignore my post if you feel the need to get in a heated debate. I'd like to discuss the second ammendment, not have sarcastic, and snide responses. Thank you.

  4. What was torn down on the mall where that sky bridge goes across? Also looks like the sky bridge was ate up at the end and doesn't connect to anything yet.

Mervyns was torn down several months back. The sky bridge is waiting for the the new buildout where the Mervyns used to be.

  5. Funny how people make comments like this, as long as the development is not in their own neighborhood.

And it's a little unfair for people to keep bringing up the lower-income thing. It's not that specifically, but the school overcrowding (150 families is larger than some subdivisions), traffic on that little two-lane road, falling property values, and potential crime problems (just read the news... most of the violent crime in Houston happens around apartment complexes, does it not?) So you want the complex citizens to have plenty of rights and privileges, but what about all the surrounding residents?

If what you said were the view of the developer, I'd like to see him build it in his own part of town and school attendance zone. Do you think that would actually ever happen? Highly unlikely.

The developer just wants to make money off the project. It's a business venture and nothing else.

And yes - when it's a government subsidized project and my tax dollars are being used, I think I have a say in it. Especially when we up and moved our family from a perfectly good home six months ago, for the sole reason of getting into a better school zone.

    And now this...

Edit: Loved the post, but decided to eliminate my rant.

  6. I wish I could remember what topic it was under but I posted awhile back that inside information told me the apartment flood was coming. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

I and a few others got flamed because we thought all these apartments were not going to be good for this area. Time will tell I guess.

Funny thing is all these apartments are hoping for these hospital, etc and who knows if ST. Lukes has not put on the back burner.

From information I am getting from a couple of associates I know at KBR they may not be building their campus out here either as proposed. Course if someone who works for KBR can say more on this would be interesting but from what I was told depends on the economy and other factors. Also the fact they may be looking to relocate corporate overseas because of better tax breaks. Again though this is just what I got from a couple of people that work there.

The KBR relocation is on hold indeffinately.

  7. I'm confused. You're speaking of Highway 6?

Highway 6 isn't anywhere near what i'm speaking of.

14515 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1...=1&ct=image

where is Campbell, Bingle, Voss, and Wirt?

The strip center I'm speaking of is 'right before' you get to the 610 curve from Katy Freeway. Highway 6 is 1 mile from 610 and I-10?

    Edit:

    Golden Oaks Center

    14515 Katy Freeway

    Houston, Texas 77079

Yes, that is at highway 6.

The center I'm speaking of is not.

The pic that you have IS the strip center at Hwy 6. The strip center I believe your talking about is just West of Chimney Rock on the East bound feeder. Oh, and it hasn't been remodeled, it's new, and yes it's very empty.

  8. I have been really close to tearing down the "we scoop poop" signs myself. All it would take is a chainsaw. Can anybody just pop a sign up right there? They spent some money on those signs...but I have been seriously considering taking them down myself.

Apparently you can put up whatever the hell you want out here.

My new 'if I win the lottery' fantasy is to go on a massive apartment building spree in unincorporated west Harris county. With thousands of signs.

    :D

You would be in good company. Also, let's not forget the apartment building spree going up on the Westpark.

  9. How about the "We Scoop Poop" signs....Yes I have noticed those apartments and just shake my head. I feel sorry for the people who will have that sight in their back yard, the people who live in Falcon Point, for years they had no back yard neighbor and now they are going to have apartments, THAT SUCKS! On another note, WHEN IS THAT HOSPITAL COMING?? I REALLY HOPE THIS PROJECT DOES NOT DIE LIKE THE GRAND DID....

I'm concerened about the hospital being delayed to. My fear is that the powers that be may get a wild idea to put another apartment complex up.

  10. Good lord, it keeps getting worse. Now Allies Steakhouse, whom I've considered trying, put up a crappy sign on the feeder road that must be 25+ feet wide and constructed with a Home Depot sized load of 2x4's. So added to the hot air ballons, rockets, broken down trucks and ever other imaginable form of advertisment, I am CERTAIN I WILL NOT try Allies because I am officially boycotting any business in the sewage hole of a shopping center.

I noticed this sign last weekend,, and was appalled. The unincorporated areas of Katy are really starting to suck. Of course let's not forget the new apartment complex going up just South of Kingsland.

  11. perhaps i should have made it clear that i consider myself "christian". when i denounce wrong behaviour of christians, i'm including myself. what good does it do to build huge ass freakin' crosses? donate to habitat for humanity or aids relief in africa. there are a hundred different ways to do god's work rather than waste money on a symbol. i'm worked up because of ridiculous crap people come up with who call themselves followers of christ.

i apologize for name calling. it is simply because i hate to be tied to people who do dumb stuff. i will edit my statement.

Again, your making huge assumptions of what that cross may mean to others, which in turn may spur more good than you think.

    I'm out.

  12. If you are going to advocate censorship of those views with which you disagree, I say good riddance.

(yes, I'll say it to your face as well).

Cencorship? It's called having a little class, and not being a constant anti Christian prick. You might want to take a look at your own signature to see what I'm talking about.

Red, you and your little click have fun. Oh, and I play around town all the time (Continental, etc), so come on by and say hey, and we'll have that conversation face to face. Just check my website for dates. Or you can PM me, and we can do it that way.

    Turn the other cheek, pal.

For what? I never said I was a Christian.

  13. sorry, i must disagree. if the christian community wants to cheapen their faith by ridiculous symbols over substance, ridicule and cheap shots should be expected. like begets like. cheesy crosses require ugly responses. if god's work is nothing more than a symbol of "marked territory", no one should be amazed that people of little faith disregard these "symbols". good intentions are not action. building a symbol of christ's death does nothing for the person dying of cancer or losing their career. loving one's neighbor as one loves their own family does more for the soul than a hundred big ass crosses. stupid, dumb ass, christians. work where you are. love those near to you. quit building pagan symbols that have nothing to do with real spirituality.

Why is the cross a rediculous symbol of faith? And how do you know that the church doesn't have substance with it's giving? Your talking about something that your clearly biased about, and YOUR argument is the one with little substance, at least until you can provide me with numbers on giving by the church. You and others here deem the cross rediculous, or call it cheesy, while others in the community may not. Maybe it gives certain individuals hope which in turn brings them to a point of giving. Maybe it gives some the inspiration to be a better person, which in turn causes them to visit the sick. And maybe, just Maybe the people wanted a portion of their giving to go to the cross, and maybe for reasons you don't understand. So To say that it's ok to mock the person that many believe is the Messiah, when you don't know the personal motivation, is wrong, period.

Why do you automatically assume that Christians are not taking care of they're faith at home when they decide they want to put a cross up? I don't care how many you know that don't live the life, which is the common answer. How do you know that this particular church doesn't live according to their beliefs? Also, Even if they're crooks, and idots, that doesn't mean that Jesus isn't who he claimed to be, and if he is, then mocking him with such offense is pretty scary. Of course you sound like your mind is already made up about that, so it's probably a pointless statement on my end.

Finally, I can't believe that a moderator is allowed to use such offensive terms like "stupid dumb ass Christians". This forum, which I used to enjoy very much, has become a haven for badmouthing Christianity, conservatism, and is filled with smart ass comentators that I can bet wouldn't say much of this while in the same room with me.

Forgive me for being this bold Wayne, but continuing to allow this kind of stuff on an architectural forum is beyond me. At this point I will no longer post at HAIF, which I'm sure will devastate many. NOT!

    EDIT: Cue Red's rant...

  14. Unless it serves as a random topic bump to get this thread noticed, then I guess what LTAWACS is doing is fine silly. I agree, I'd like more relevant updates on BLVD place too.

I wish developers would at least publish a tentative project schedule on their websites, even if they are off track.

I'm sure at this point it's very difficult to speculate at all.

  15. Awesome. Pretty soon select CVS locations will now have another CVS INSIDE them.

Actually this will be a welcome addition to the area, and a smart business move by CVS considering that it will be the only pharmacy somewhat connected to the medical center. Anyway, as bad as the North side of the freeway is, a CVS will do nothing but help it.
