  1. Muddy, welcome to HAIF! My husband is from England, too, and moved here six years ago. He started out in Clear Lake (and is very glad he's no longer there, due to the hurricane) and we now live on the west side. He loves it over here, and I expect you would, too. :)

Here's a website I would suggest familiarizing yourself with: www.har.com. You can search for homes and/or rentals throughout the Houston area and you can narrow it down by nearly any search feature you can think of. I would suggest that you look at "Residential Lease" first, since you'll be renting to start out. In the search page, put in "Georgetown" as the subdivision. There are several very nice townhomes for rent in this neighborhood and I think it would be right up your alley. Great neighborhood, very low crime, easy access to lots of shopping (you can walk to the shops from here, unlike most outer Loop neighborhoods), and it's right off Beltway 8 so you could get to BMC in about five minutes in the morning. It's a better area overall than Westchase.

Also, to briefly correct KristinKamas above, Westchase does not extend north to I-10. Its northern boundary is Briar Forest. Once you get above Briar Forest, you're in the Memorial area of town, which is much nicer than Westchase. It also doesn't extend to Highway 6, either. Its western boundary is Woodland Park. Westchase is great for business, not so great for living. The apartments and houses in that area are quite run down for the most part, although there are always exceptions to the rule.

Other places to rent in the area can be spotty, so check with us if you have any hesitations at all. We're friendly, happy to help and -- most importantly -- we're honest. :)

    Good luck!

Agreed... My wife and I lived in Memorial Townhomes (Memorial and Beltway 8) and it was a great area for just about everything you could want. Our rent for a 3 bedroom townhome with 2 car garage was about $1200.00.

  2. My family's beach house in Bolivar is gone. My dad built it in 1962 and sold it when he retired in 1982 to his younger brother. Nothing visible from the NOAA satellite photo except a slab. We always knew we were at nature's mercy. It was a nice long ride while it lasted.

Sorry to hear that Plumber. Do you think your uncle will rebuild?

  3. For those of you that don't mind the drive, there are a number of gas stations in the Katy area open, and with short lines (15 to 20 minute waits). A few are: Shell (99 & Kingsland/east side), Exxon (99 & Kingsland/west side), Valero (Mason & Cimmeron Pkwy), HEB (Mason & Highland Knowles), Randalls (Mason & Highland Knowles), Kroger (99 & Highland Knowles)

  4. Thought I would start up some discussion on what affect Hurricane Ike will have on Galveston in the coming months, and even years.

I'll start with the devastating loss of The Balinese Room... This was in my opinion the coolest and most unique venue in the country, and can never be replaced. How do you guys think this will affect the natives, and those of us that love Galveston and her history?

  5. No comments about the shakeup at MSNBC? Damb liberal bias. It's obviously worked on some of yall.

To me it's unfortunate that the term "Liberal" is always associated with Democrats, although many Dems today do lean liberal. I say that because I don't dissagree with several things they've tried to accomplish over the last number of years. For instance, health care. health care is grossly overpriced, I just dissagree with the Dems on how to reform it.

    Edit: rediculous spelling.

  6. correct! they are under the piles of near fading New Wave threads & Plasmatics albums.

You wanna unload some of those "New Wave threads"? I'm starting a cover band with Steve Candelari of "The Octanes", and I need some new stage clothes.

  7. I believe they are aren't they?

Gary could probably answer this question. If a band plays a cover they have to pay royalties, don't they?

Technically yes, but it's impossible to monitor in the public arena, and most publishing companies don't care anyway. However, Churches they do care about and they must pay an annual lump sum to various publishing companies ASCAP/BMI etc, in order to have the unlimited use of a particular artists song.

  8. Many acts are OK in the studio but terrible on stage.

Ain't that the truth. It surprizes me how little the listening public understands the role of a producer in writing and arangement. Much of what you hear on decent studio albums is because of a good producer. They can make a crappy band sound great , thus the reason many sound uninspiring on stage, especially today.

Most of these bands today should thanks the gods of Pro Tools (NLE editing).
