  1. Interesting. When I was in Vancouver for the Olympics I was talking with a friend about the World Expo's. Wondered why North America hasn't hosted an Expo since 1986? I've always thought the Worlds Fair was a great idea, not sure why a full generation of folks here haven't had the chance to experience one. Maybe the cost isn't worth it....
  2. King Biscuit (because I can walk there and they have great Jazz on Tuesdays). Food is standard, but really good when they get the outdoor grill going. Empire Seafood/Chinese: everything. This is seriously good food. Sweet Temptation: everything. FANTASTIC Italian for a third the price of the other fancy spots Patrenellas: lasagna. Berryhills: easy and wifey likes the fish tacos. Spanish Flowers: gotta love 24hrs Chilosos Taco House: seriously, 12x per year, I probably hit this quota in about 2 months. Carter and Cooley: sandwiches Stella Sola: so far on par to hit it 12 times Dacapos: sandwiches and custom cakes Onion Creek: not so much because the food is good, but I usually need something to offset the pints with friends. Wow...looking at this I think I have a foodie problem. Actually......its not problem at all.
  3. Even though I rarely consume soft drinks, Coke is by far the better choice to have. I recommend having a few fresh brewed flavored iced teas for folks. Not that sweetened bottled stuff, but similar to the stuff you get at Carter + Cooley. And fresh lemonade.
  4. This makes me happy. I will be even happier if they can get the Heights bike trail to connect to this. Studemontrose is really dangerous for bikers north of Washington Ave.
  5. Its colder here than it was in Vancouver

  6. I was looking in this area when I bought a few years ago. Ended up buying in the Woodland Heights because it was more quiet. Glad I did. While I do enjoy many of the offerings now found on Washington Avenue, I'm glad I dont have to deal with all the infrastructure issues popping up in the surrounding neighborhoods. At least I can still bike to many of the non-douche spots pretty easily.
  7. Be like Vancouver and convert full traffic lanes to bicycles and pedestrian only. http://www.vacc.bc.ca/index.php?pageID=124&loc=#321
  8. Nope, its coming. Talking with the Bike Coordinator for the city, he said they will reconfigure the bike path to go under the new service road. http://www.khou.com/news/local/Feeder-Roads-coming-to-I-10-inside-the-loop-80673147.html
  9. Well at the inauguration ceremony for the bike trail in December, they said the connection of this to downtown would start construction in 2010. They also said they were in negotiations to connect this to Memorial Park too, but nothing was finalized there. As for the bike path, just as its finished, be prepared for parts of it to be torn up when the build the I-10 access road. Which starts soon apparently...
  10. I spent some time talking with David Adickes this weekend and finally got around to asking him "Whats up with the Beatles?". He said the original spot off I-10 turned out to be too small for the 4 statues. Instead he said he has something else for the piece of land that should be moving there in the next few weeks. He didn't offer up exactly what those pieces might be. As for the Beatles statues, he said he's talking with the city about the possibility of them residing permanently at Discovery Green. As much as I'd love for them to stay in the Heights, honestly I think this would be a really cool spot for them to be. That area is already becoming a highly photographed part of town and the addition of these would take it to a whole new level. Hopefully something can be worked out. Soon.
  11. Interesting nuggets coming from the CES keynote last night. Project Natal for the Xbox will be release late next year, as previously suspected. The videos for this seem fascinating. Also another interesting addition is the 360 will be able to be used as a television set top box to receive U-Verse services from AT+T. I assume we'll see that during their annual Fall Xbox Live update.
  12. I picked up a couple 6packs of DR9 and it just confirmed to me I'm not all that fond of fruits and veggies in my beer. I do think DR8 was brewed by the gods however. [/hijack]
  13. * 6 more bars will open along Douchington Ave * Med Centre will announce another huge research building * St. Arnolds Divine #10 will sell out in less than 10 minutes * Star Wars comes out on blu ray * San Francisco/LA will experience a major quake
  14. Ahhh, my home. Good to see it again. Can't wait for it to shine during the 2010 Olympics.
  15. Yeah, can't say I'm too impressed with their conclusion that Yale should be a 'thoroughfare'. Shepherd, I can see. Yale....not so much. I don't know of too many 'thoroughfares' in Houston that have residential houses and bike paths crossing it. If I lived there and knew the city had plans to build with the intent of having 18 wheelers roll down in regularly, I'd be seriously pissed.
  16. I guess Fatburger is out now as they're not shown on the latest occupancy plans. Looks like a Southwells Hamburgers is setting up next to the pet store though....
  17. No way. How could anyone even fathom sending this structure to the ground??? That should be criminal.
  18. 1) Chinese Food. I know that sounds silly especially with such great options in our area like Empire Seafood on Airline, but when I lived in Midland there was a big HEB there on the loop that had one of those fresh-made in house chinese kitchens where you could get a menu that rivaled Pei Wei and was very affordable. I haven't seen anything like it in any other HEB I've been to. It was ridiculously good. 2) Organics. I dont care if these 'studies' say there is no difference between organic food and hormonally injected biosynthetically reproduced plant and animal matter, I feel better eating organic and will pay the extra $ for it. 3) Fresh seafood: Nothing like Dungeness Crab straight from the Pacific Northwest. mmmmm...... 4) Wide aisles. Love me some Central Market, but hate trying to navigate those tiny corridors. 5) BEER!: Lots of it. Miller and budweiser don't count. 6) CM: more Central Market. Their hot sandwiches, soups, salad bar, bulk foods, prepared foods. 7) Bike racks: nuff said. I could go on, but I'm hungry now....
  19. We bought a new place last November and I didn't send anything in until they appraised the home way higher than the purchase.
  20. Will second the Washington Heights Clinic. They have an amazing set up there and everyone is so wonderful. Previously took the pets to the Montrose clinic and had great experiences there as well, but made the change since WH is closer to home. No regrets. We are very lucky in this area to have several good vet's in/around the neighborhood.
  21. I have a rental up on Euclid (the equivalent of 8th St if numbered) and although I wasn't there for TS Allison, I did talk to my neighbors and they said Allison waters came up to approx 6 1/2 or 7th st. That would put these places well in the flood waters. However, most understand that Allison was not your typical spring storm and the normal flooding I've seen out of White Oak Bayou regularly does a good job of bringing water into that crappy Skylane complex but nothing has even come close to making it to Julian. Why is that crappy Skylane still there anyways? (the question is rhetorical, no need to hijack this thread)
  22. I was originally told a 'wine bar' by the Tamale folk, but it seemed they themselves didn't have the full story. After a while they got their story right and called it a 'sandwich shop that serves adult beverages'. It used to be a Quickie Mart that sold beer, etc so I'm guessing they'll get the permit that allows them serve drinks assuming most of their sales comes from food. Essentially the same permit that the Washington SPECS got and lost.
