  1. We live in the Heights (walking distance to Travis) and although we don't have kids yet, we're more than content with raising a kid up through the Elementary level in the area. By the time any children of ours makes it to Middle and High Schools I highly suspect there will be a monumental shift from the levels we currently see.

  2. Back to the ground floor retail issue, I heard the original plan was to lease out the ground floor as retail but then Hess leased out the whole building and they will now sublet the ground floor to retail of their choosing, when they choose to. Doubt there will be retail upon opening this summer, but hopefully sooner rather than later. My hopes for a nice pub/restaurant on that corner are not entirely dashed yet.

  3. Growing up in Canada, I need trees in my life, so for me the Heights is a nice balance of greenery and neartown city life. That said, there's a part of me that loves what the Disco G area of DT has become. Lots of cool places to hangout there, nice park, restaurants, evening distractions, etc. Soon to be added to the mix: grocery options which I think are loooong overdue and will really be a good welcome mat for others who want to live down there. I think investing in that area is a smart move, if you can find that nice place that offers all of this within a block or two of your front door. The area on the other side of 59 has potential, especially with the new soccer stadium, but if you can afford the Disco G area I think that's the way to go.

"My latest project is Distillery – Twenty 5 Twenty, near the Washington corridor. It is a sports-themed restaurant and bar. The concept is simple: build a comfortable place where one can get a good meal, especially thin crust pizzas, watch their favorite sports games and listen to good music. We sit on an acre of land surrounded by parks and lush green space with ample parking, outdoor patios and a second floor deck with views of our downtown skyline. With all the renovations, we’ve really transformed this location into an establishment that will make a significant contribution to this historic neighborhood."

  5. I've done the pedal party many times. Yes its legal. There isn't any type of motor on the device and the driver of course simply steers. There is room for a keg on board, but the driver does not serve the beer. Its fun, but you really do burn calories going from one bar to the other.

  6. Y'know, I heard trains too come to think of it. No doubt in my mind it was Washington Ave. At my previous place close to White Oak the winter months always made for a louder train signal...cold air and lack of tree foliage.

  7. www.beckett.com is the online guide to what many consider the best price guide for sports cards. However, a card is only worth what someone is willing to pay, so in that regard I often see things on eBay like 'Beckett priced at $35, buy now for only $7!'. Around 1990 was when the baseball card glut happened so generally speaking those aren't worth the cardboard their printed on. Ken Griffey Jr was rookied in 1989, but I think generally if you recognize the players name on your card then you might have something worth selling. The other 'commons' maybe not so much.

  8. On my drive up Houston Ave last night, I noticed that oft-worked-on-oft-forgotten building on the NE corner of White Oak and Houston Ave has been busy with workers and as of last night now has a tarp saying 'coming soon, Distillery Twenty 5 Twenty Bar and Grill' or something to that effect.

Anyone got any further info on it?

I hope the drinks come with inner tubes because I've seen that intersection under water many times during heavy rains. I wonder if the proposed detention ponds will keep this area dry? I hope its not a douchebar.
