  1. Back to the ground floor retail issue, I heard the original plan was to lease out the ground floor as retail but then Hess leased out the whole building and they will now sublet the ground floor to retail of their choosing, when they choose to. Doubt there will be retail upon opening this summer, but hopefully sooner rather than later. My hopes for a nice pub/restaurant on that corner are not entirely dashed yet.

  2. I've done the pedal party many times. Yes its legal. There isn't any type of motor on the device and the driver of course simply steers. There is room for a keg on board, but the driver does not serve the beer. Its fun, but you really do burn calories going from one bar to the other.

  3. Then again, Montrose isn't as well know for its snobs as is the Heights. The Heights is full of people from the Woodlands who got tired of the long commute into town. There is little difference these days. It's just a bunch of snobbery snobnose snobs.

Actually, I know way more Montrose folks that have moved to the Heights. I dont know a single Woodlands person that made the move. Its not snobbery to be vocal with neighborhood concerns. So I assume you wouldn't oppose a sex shop being built next to your house then? You'd just be quiet because being vocal about it would be considered too snobby right, and I assume you're not a hypocrite.

  4. Since most of what I'm reading on here are opinions, here's mine. I dont want a Walmart here. Do I think it will attract poor people? Not really. Criminals? Maybe, but nothing I'd fret over. My convertible was broken into in the new Kroger parking lot last weekend in broad daylight and I'll still shop there. Traffic? Sure, but I live in the Woodland Heights and Target hasn't resulted in traffic jams down my street.

I just plain don't want one. I moved to the Heights 4 years ago, from the Dunvale area. Yes, THAT Dunvale. The one everyone uses as the antiWalmart model. Its a good model too, that place was a mess. Do I think this will become another Dunvale? Lol, not really. But the truth is none of us know exactly what this Walmart will do to the neighborhood. Its all speculation. But I moved into the Heights and fell in love with the area in part because places like Walmart didnt exist, and now 4 years later, have some hefty financial investments in the neighborhood. So from a monetary perspective, I want to protect my investments and I don't speculate Walmart will help with that.

I left the suburbs to get away from that culture, and although I'm not one of those folks that will be showing up at every event picketing the Walmartian Gods, I will have my piece and let Walmart know as a resident I will not support their business. And its not just Walmart either. I could care less about their ethics, its more the big box constant concrete mentality. I don't think a Hobby Lobby is a good use of that space either.

I think given the strong antiWalmart sentiment being expressed here and on the web, I really don't fear for our little mom and pops in the neighborhood. The Heights has a neighborhood loyalty I have not experienced anywhere else, and I think that loyalty will more than ensure the continued profitability of our little shops. My money will still go to C+D, I will still shop on 19th, and I will still ensure that much of my disposable income stays in the neighborhood. Walmart needs to know that. And I think that's where the power of the thousands of anti Walmart people can and will make a difference.

  5. It would require them to acquire the apartment complex on Heights blvd, demolish it, extend Koehler St, & then create a new block by cutting the newly acquired parcels with an avenue.

While the image may be considered 'crap', this part does seem true as I've read somewhere that these apartments are part of the sale and will be demolished as part of the project.

  6. King Biscuit (because I can walk there and they have great Jazz on Tuesdays). Food is standard, but really good when they get the outdoor grill going.

Empire Seafood/Chinese: everything. This is seriously good food.

Sweet Temptation: everything. FANTASTIC Italian for a third the price of the other fancy spots

    Patrenellas: lasagna.

Berryhills: easy and wifey likes the fish tacos.

    Spanish Flowers: gotta love 24hrs

Chilosos Taco House: seriously, 12x per year, I probably hit this quota in about 2 months.

    Carter and Cooley: sandwiches

Stella Sola: so far on par to hit it 12 times

    Dacapos: sandwiches and custom cakes

Onion Creek: not so much because the food is good, but I usually need something to offset the pints with friends.

Wow...looking at this I think I have a foodie problem. Actually......its not problem at all.

  7. I don't know of any plans for a feeder going in between Studemont and Taylor? They have only talked about putting one in around Yale. This shouldnt effect the new Hike and Bike.

Nope, its coming. Talking with the Bike Coordinator for the city, he said they will reconfigure the bike path to go under the new service road.

  8. One of the guys with TxDot told me he knew of no immediate plans to complete the trail to downtown. It seems stupid to do all of that work and then stop short of the goal.

Well at the inauguration ceremony for the bike trail in December, they said the connection of this to downtown would start construction in 2010. They also said they were in negotiations to connect this to Memorial Park too, but nothing was finalized there.

As for the bike path, just as its finished, be prepared for parts of it to be torn up when the build the I-10 access road. Which starts soon apparently...

  9. I spent some time talking with David Adickes this weekend and finally got around to asking him "Whats up with the Beatles?". He said the original spot off I-10 turned out to be too small for the 4 statues. Instead he said he has something else for the piece of land that should be moving there in the next few weeks. He didn't offer up exactly what those pieces might be.

As for the Beatles statues, he said he's talking with the city about the possibility of them residing permanently at Discovery Green. As much as I'd love for them to stay in the Heights, honestly I think this would be a really cool spot for them to be. That area is already becoming a highly photographed part of town and the addition of these would take it to a whole new level. Hopefully something can be worked out. Soon.
