  1. There is supposed to be a Metro stop at Richmond and Dunlavy, so I imagine they will go ahead with the retail phase once the residential phase is complete.

    Austin Sprawl?

Besides its not too hard to find free street parking downtown on the weekend or after 5. I assume that's when most people would go to the park rather than during business hours. Those who go to the park during business hours will most likely already be downtown. Also, when the new Metro system is built in 2012, people from all over the city can take the light rail downtown instead of driving. Not to get this thread back on topic or anything, but here are some more Austin photos for you to consider.
  3. The new Children's Museum office building on Binz and Jackson is almost complete.
  4. That's exactly what it reminds me of - the shopping center on Westheimer and Shepheard with the bubble tea place and the Randalls.
  5. Although this project looked pretty cool, a similar project closer to the Metro Rail (Downtown or Midtown), or close to one of the proposed lines would be more exciting.

    Austin Sprawl?

Just got back from Austin. The outskirts are totally unmemorable but Downtown, UT campus, South Congress, and Guadeloupe Street were very cool. It seems that if you live anywhere near downtown you shouldn't have to deal with traffic. I found the entire area from UT to the waterfront very walkable. If anybody is interested, I can post more photos later...
  7. So does that mean the park is now open? If so I'll probably head down there some time in the next few days to take some pictures before I get busy with my next semester at Rice (next week).
  8. Sure you can test theories without actually going to the sun. That is the premise of the fields of astrophysics and cosmology. I tend to find theories by people without real credentials such as the "physicist" in the Youtube video less convincing than theories by people such as Stephen Hawking (a believer of the standard model ie: nuclear sun). The guy in the youtube video doesn't even have a PhD, nor is he employed by a university or research institution, nor has he ever published anything. That doesn't make him wrong, but it does make me a bit skeptical than if he was an established astrophysicist. He should focus on publishing his theories in Nature or Science rather than Youtube. Here's a website you might like, Gwilson: http://www.timecube.com/
  9. Not sure about that one, but I think they are building a 24 Hour Fitness over by Louisiana and Elgin... so that might be another option when it opens up...
  10. Here's a map link. It's close to the park too which is cool. Maybe it'll be like the downtown La Quinta in Austin.
  11. The rendering only shows 2 stories on the block closest to Main, which is why I assumed it had topped off. They finished the first part of it about 3 weeks ago and haven't started a 3rd story, so I think it's only going to be 2. I wonder how likely it is that they engineered it like the buildings in the medical center, where they can add an additional 10 stories if they want to in the future. I guess not very likely, but it would be cool if they could build a hotel on top of one of the sections that isn't only 2 or 3 stories.
  12. Looks like the block closest to Main Street has topped out at 2 stories, and the office tower will possibly be topping out this week as well. From the webcam I think I am looking at the 11th story being completed as I write this.
  13. I actually shop at the 99 cents store on Westheimer sometimes because the one in my hood (Almeda and Sothmore area) always has people begging out front and you can't go there without being hit up for spare change. So, I can kind of see where this guy is coming from. Even though its not in my neighborhood, I am more likely to shop there than the one in my hood.
  14. That's for the info, that's exactly what I thought.
  15. Of course not, but natural light makes shopping a bit nicer. That's why the Galleria has skylights.
  16. What's wrong with a little natural light while you shop? The Sears in midtown looks like it used to have windows at ground level but they were bricked in, maybe because of the fear of getting broken into? Montreal's big department store "The Bay" has windows, although it looks like lots of them are blocked too. This building seems more like a "classic" to me than Houston's Macy's, but maybe I have to take a closer look at the old Macy's/Foley's building. Anybody got any photos? Here's the Bay building I am talking about...
  17. Can we merge the two topics on this subject?
  18. I agree that the building is damn ugly on the outside. I hate buildings with no windows.
  19. Thanks for the info. I've seen that building before and always wondered what "The Center" was. (sign says The Center not The Men's Center)
  20. Yeah, I was really surprised the one time I parked there and realized it wasn't free. Now I ride the Metro Rail when I shop at Macy's (I've since moved to an apartment in walking distance of the rail). I sure beats going to the Galleria for Christmas shopping, as long as you can find what you need anyways.
  21. The only reason I can think of is so that they could show it off. The CEO said it will be a "showplace where customers can see firsthand the IT infrastructure-hosting capabilities". I don't think all of their servers would have to be in there, but I imagine they are going to be showing something besides people sitting at desks. I personally think it's a neat idea.
