  1. Here's a photo of the construction site on Friday evening. http://www.flickr.com/photos/j-a-x/468881254/
  2. You can still go up there, just not to the very top. Just go into the lobby, take the elevator to the sky lobby and enjoy the view. I've never felt it swaying before.
  3. Apparently now they are opening June 4th. And their prices are very steep. I looked into having my mom stay there when she comes to visit me, and the "special rate" for people affiliated with Rice is $179. It's definitely the closest hotel to the campus, but that's bit too expensive.
  4. It's not like all of the bars and clubs are closed. I was downtown on Friday and there were a lot of people waiting in line for clubs and drinking outside on patios, but there were also a bunch of bars and clubs either closed or for rent. So although a lot of bars and clubs are closed, there are a lot more open than closed. I think this might be a good thing because maybe this will allow different types of businesses to open in the place of the clubs which are now closed. Maybe downtown can't support 30 different clubs - it might be better to have 10 clubs, a few more cafes and restaurants, retail, etc. A more diverse range of businesses is always a good thing. I just hope those clubs that are now closed don't turn into sketchy wig stores or dollar stores like around main street square. I think we can get better than that.
  5. Any idea when they are supposed to be open for business? I don't really trust what it says on their website. I was downtown on Friday evening and things really felt more alive than I've seen downtown since I moved to Houston. I am looking forward to the day when it feels even more alive with some actual retail and more restaurant options. I'm moving near the light rail so it will be pretty easy for me to go downtown in the future, which is another reason I can't wait for this to open. The thing I like about downtown is it feels a bit more cohesive than any other part of Houston. There may be sketchy people peeing on buildings, but least there are no strip malls. Strip malls have their place I guess, but it's just nice to go somewhere that feels a bit more like a big city sometimes.
  6. Sorry if this is off topic, but why is this forum suddenly only showing one post at a time, and I have to click on the individual posts on the bottom to see them. I didn't read the two replies before I posted because of that.
  7. That sounds pretty awesome, but it's not really right in the medical center though, is it? It will probably be connected by a shuttle bus I guess.
  8. What do you mean by neighborhood sidewalks? Like sidewalks with big cracks in them (my current neighborhood has this problem, I guess due to the roots of the live oaks)...
  9. Any idea if it's supposed to be visible from the sidewalk, or is it tucked away inside the building somewhere? That kind of sucks that some of the retail is in the skywalk, but I guess it's better than nothing. I like the way they did the street level retail at BCM. Only problem is I only go there when I walk from Rice. When I am driving through it is absolutely impossible to stop and eat. It's always full of medical people though.
  10. I heard there was supposed to be a bunch of retail/restaurants in this tower. I walked by it the other day when I was on my way home from Rice and I didn't see any retail, at least at ground level. Does anybody know what's up with that? Is the retail hidden away in the building or is it not open yet? I was hoping it would be at ground level. THe Chipotle / Starbucks at thee BCM building is so popular, it seems like somebody would try to copy that. I would love it because it would mean more eating options within walking distance of Rice (food at Rice isn't the best).
  11. Found this on their webpage. There is also a webcam incase anybody is interested. MOSAIC ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF VERTICAL CONSTRUCTION Apr 03, 2007 @ 09:06 am by Mosaic of Houston Mosaic First Tower Gets
  12. I think the building it's replacing is ugly, the upper stories were abandoned anyways (as far as I could tell), and the building that's replacing it looks much more asthetically pleasing as far as I am concerned. So maybe their marketing is cheesy, but overall, I think it's going to help the village grow into something really cool. As it is, the village isn't much more than a large collection of strip mall type shopping centers. I think the idea of some nice apartments/condos in the village is a good thing.
  13. Thanks for the info, I should check it out. I take it that garage is publicly accessible. I will try to post some on here at some point but for now all of my photos are on Flickr if you want to check them out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/j-a-x/
  14. Where did you get the skyline shots? It looks like the roof of a parking garage in the museum district. Would you mind telling me where that was so I could take some skyline shots too? http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/iss...onMuseum052.jpg
  15. I emailed the developer, he says it's on track for this year, but that's about it. The email address on the webpage (www.binzmedcorp.com) was an @msn.com address, not too professional for something of this scale. By the way, could we merge the threads?
  16. Here's the link: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=4593 I'm wondering if anything is going to happen with this...
  17. So does anybody know if this is actually going to happen? I am considering moving into that neighborhood and just wondering what itmight be like in 3-5 years if I end up staying... An urban style starbucks sounds good to me.
  18. Weird. When I moved here in the summer I noticed it was sort of abandoned and I haven't seen any changes. Are they going to tear down what's there or just renovate the existing buildings. And what was El Ruchi's? I'm kinda new here so I guess I'm missing out...
  19. When driving through midtown, I've noticed a bunch of development signs dated 2006, including a Fire Department museum and several mixed use developments, and some kind of plaza on Milam as well, I think. The signs say "coming in 2006" and it's currently 2007 so I was wondering... are these guys just late or have the projects been cancelled? It would be nice to see less empty lots in midtown.
  20. Any idea what's going on at this intersection? There's currently an abandoned plaza, and I drive by fairly often wondering what's going to happen to it. Recently I saw a sign talking about some sort of new development but I was unable to read it. Does anybody know?
  21. I'd like to know more about this as well, since it's right around the corner from where I live. I hope it's going to be nice! At least now that they're working on it it won't be a mosquito breeding ground like it was last summer. The empty lot had bad drainage and was basically a large swamp!
