  1. Apparently now they are opening June 4th. And their prices are very steep. I looked into having my mom stay there when she comes to visit me, and the "special rate" for people affiliated with Rice is $179. It's definitely the closest hotel to the campus, but that's bit too expensive.
  2. Wow that is a funky looking tower. I wonder how big it will be... EDIT: Oh.. it says right in the picture... duh.
  3. It's not like all of the bars and clubs are closed. I was downtown on Friday and there were a lot of people waiting in line for clubs and drinking outside on patios, but there were also a bunch of bars and clubs either closed or for rent. So although a lot of bars and clubs are closed, there are a lot more open than closed. I think this might be a good thing because maybe this will allow different types of businesses to open in the place of the clubs which are now closed. Maybe downtown can't support 30 different clubs - it might be better to have 10 clubs, a few more cafes and restaurants, retail, etc. A more diverse range of businesses is always a good thing. I just hope those clubs that are now closed don't turn into sketchy wig stores or dollar stores like around main street square. I think we can get better than that.
  4. I guess I meant the areas with the bars and clubs. Areas where there are people around, as opposed to the area south of main street square where there isn't much of anything going on. Along main street there were lots of people around the last few evenings I've been there, sitting out on the patios at a few bars (the Flying Saucer, a few Irish pubs that I forget the names of), waiting in lines at clubs, walking between venues, etc. I'm relatively new to Houston so I forget the street names but there are actually restaurants, bars, and clubs on main street which seem relatively popular, at least the last few times when I was there. It was nice the last few times I was downtown to actually see people in the streets at night. What I mean is that since most of the walk is through the part of main street that is active at night, and the theater district which is active as well, it wouldn't seem so scary to walk between HP and the Angelica Theater. Also further North on main (towards U of H) from where I just mentioned seems pretty active at night with Mia Bella restaurant and Cabo and a bunch of other places where you see people sitting outside and walking around. Here is the walk I was talking about, from Angelica to HP: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=864377 Maybe the "popular' part of main street is more to the North actually... but I hope you get my point that the walk would not be too bad.
  5. I think this is basically the route. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=862912 0.7 miles. That's like 10 minutes max. And 5 of those 10 would be walking through the theater district and the really popular parts of main so even now it wouldn't be too bad of a walk.
  6. Walking sounds great to me - it's not that far. I used to walk for miles when I lived in Montreal. I didn't even own a car! I kind of miss walking places... I went to a movie at Angelica on Friday (Grindhouse), and walked to an irish pub on main street. I was only a few blocks from main street square and Houston pavilions is only a few blocks past that.. right? or is it farther than I imagine? Anybody who knows more about the project than me want to do a google maps pedometer of the route? http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ Right now the walk seems kind of scary because there's nothing really between main street square and the HP site therefore the streets are pretty empty I am guessing, but imagine if there were people out on the streets walking with you, it wouldn't be so bad!
  7. Any idea when they are supposed to be open for business? I don't really trust what it says on their website. I was downtown on Friday evening and things really felt more alive than I've seen downtown since I moved to Houston. I am looking forward to the day when it feels even more alive with some actual retail and more restaurant options. I'm moving near the light rail so it will be pretty easy for me to go downtown in the future, which is another reason I can't wait for this to open. The thing I like about downtown is it feels a bit more cohesive than any other part of Houston. There may be sketchy people peeing on buildings, but least there are no strip malls. Strip malls have their place I guess, but it's just nice to go somewhere that feels a bit more like a big city sometimes.
  8. Sorry if this is off topic, but why is this forum suddenly only showing one post at a time, and I have to click on the individual posts on the bottom to see them. I didn't read the two replies before I posted because of that.
  9. That sounds pretty awesome, but it's not really right in the medical center though, is it? It will probably be connected by a shuttle bus I guess.
  10. What do you mean by neighborhood sidewalks? Like sidewalks with big cracks in them (my current neighborhood has this problem, I guess due to the roots of the live oaks)...
  11. Any idea if it's supposed to be visible from the sidewalk, or is it tucked away inside the building somewhere? That kind of sucks that some of the retail is in the skywalk, but I guess it's better than nothing. I like the way they did the street level retail at BCM. Only problem is I only go there when I walk from Rice. When I am driving through it is absolutely impossible to stop and eat. It's always full of medical people though.
  12. I heard there was supposed to be a bunch of retail/restaurants in this tower. I walked by it the other day when I was on my way home from Rice and I didn't see any retail, at least at ground level. Does anybody know what's up with that? Is the retail hidden away in the building or is it not open yet? I was hoping it would be at ground level. THe Chipotle / Starbucks at thee BCM building is so popular, it seems like somebody would try to copy that. I would love it because it would mean more eating options within walking distance of Rice (food at Rice isn't the best).
  13. I went to the webpage and I can't find any info on this project. So is it currently under construction? What is the exact location?
  14. I hope this isn't too off topic, but does anybody know how Taco A GoGo Sig's Lagoon, and the Continental Club exist when virtually all of the rest of the metro line though midtown looks like a ghost town? I really like that one block, there are actually normal looking people walking around and a few cool places to hang out. I bet if somebody opened another bar/shop next door it would be successful if only due to patrons of Sig's / Taco A GoGo. Anyways my question is - if one block is full of successful businesses, the why is the rest of main street in midtown relatively deserted? Everybody says its too expensive to build there, but why is the land so expensive if everybody is afraid of operating businesses/living there? It's like the area is extremely undesirable, yet expensive. I know it has potential but there's still something weird about that. Also, do you guys think that area will ever be developed, or is it always going to look like a war zone?
  15. Found this on their webpage. There is also a webcam incase anybody is interested. MOSAIC ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF VERTICAL CONSTRUCTION Apr 03, 2007 @ 09:06 am by Mosaic of Houston Mosaic First Tower Gets
  16. I think the building it's replacing is ugly, the upper stories were abandoned anyways (as far as I could tell), and the building that's replacing it looks much more asthetically pleasing as far as I am concerned. So maybe their marketing is cheesy, but overall, I think it's going to help the village grow into something really cool. As it is, the village isn't much more than a large collection of strip mall type shopping centers. I think the idea of some nice apartments/condos in the village is a good thing.
  17. Thanks for the info, I should check it out. I take it that garage is publicly accessible. I will try to post some on here at some point but for now all of my photos are on Flickr if you want to check them out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/j-a-x/
  18. Where did you get the skyline shots? It looks like the roof of a parking garage in the museum district. Would you mind telling me where that was so I could take some skyline shots too? http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/iss...onMuseum052.jpg
  19. I emailed the developer, he says it's on track for this year, but that's about it. The email address on the webpage (www.binzmedcorp.com) was an @msn.com address, not too professional for something of this scale. By the way, could we merge the threads?
  20. I thought I was the only person who thought galveston was cool, but I've only seen the good stuff (in these photos) not the sketchy parts (luckily I guess). I like it more west on the island where it's less developed and a bit more natural. Anyways cool photos, I am glad that people can get an idea of the nice parts of Galveston!
  21. Hopefully something nice. It seems to be a pretty hot area!
  22. Here's the link: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=4593 I'm wondering if anything is going to happen with this...
  23. So does anybody know if this is actually going to happen? I am considering moving into that neighborhood and just wondering what itmight be like in 3-5 years if I end up staying... An urban style starbucks sounds good to me.
  24. I was the empty lot with the trailer and the photos of this building last night when I was downtown. So could somebody please summarize the situation? Is the project officially dead? Is it rumored to be dead? Is there still a possibility they might build it?
