  1. Check this out. I think that Western Gulf made it. I picked up the link in another forum. I hope you don't mind me posting it here, Gulf!
  2. I lived in the heart of Montreal and I didn't have to deal with music from loud clubs while I was trying to sleep. The traffic noise was the only noise I had to deal with, besides annoying neighbors on occasion. If people can hear music from clubs inside apartment buildings, I think that is a problem. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the way the apartments are built or the clubs themselves though. Noise on the street one thing, noise disturbing people in their homes is another. Lots of people live in city centers more vibrant than Houston's and don't have to deal with noise pollution like that, so I don't think you can say it's normal or it should be expected. Also I don't see the pavilions creating noise that would bother residents of downtown, unless somebody decides to build apartments attached to the House of Blues!
  3. How does everybody get to go before it opens? I live in the neighborhood and I'm looking forward to seeing it's impact. Hopefully it will mean more people in the streets in the direct vicinity, around the museums and metro stations etc. As it is, it's pretty nice being here because Hermann Park is one of the only real outdoor gathering places in the city. It would be nice if there was more going on though besides the museums though (restaurants, retail) and this can only have a positive impact on the neighborhood.
  4. Does anybody have a guess at when they might start building the second tower? By the way, thanks for the compliment!
  5. Just to put this in perspective, I was downtown a few weeks ago on a Friday night and it seemed to be pretty happening. I ate at Mia Bella and walked around a bit on Main and the bars seemed to be busy. Not as busy as downtown Montreal or Toronto but by Houston standards I was impressed. Main street square seems to me to always be dead but north of there on Main and Bayou Place seemed to be busy. About having a Metro system that would take you from the Theater District to the Hilton... it's a nice idea but even in places like Montreal you have to walk those sort of distances regularly. Take a look at the map, the metro system is extensive but you still have to walk to get to many destinations between the lines. The difference, I guess, is that there are more people in the streets and less abandoned buildings hence more to look at as you walk in Montreal but distance wise that type of walk is pretty common even for cities with good subway systems. The walking thing in Houston will only get better as more street level businesses appear such as those at HP.
  6. Here is a better photo of the Mosaic from a few days ago, and you can see a bit of the construction near the Esplanade apartments at Almeda and Hermann Drive as well.
  7. It looks like they took the residential part out of the website... finally.
  8. I have a balcony on the 3rd floor - not very high but very different from my last apartment which was a ground level garage apartment. The biggest difference I notice is there are NO MOSQUITOS up here and at my old place, I'd get bitten every time I opened the door from April until until December!!! Maybe that was because my landlords had a poorly landscaped yard with lots of puddles and standing water, or because there were more trees, but whatever the reason, a 3rd floor balcony is way better than a small 1st floor yard. There is also a very slight breeze up here, as compared to ground level. I could only imagine a higher balcony would have less mosquito problems and a better breeze, definitely good things.
  9. Has anybody confirmed that there won't be an entrance from Main street and that it will be "suburban style" ? Last time I drove by it was really hard to tell what it was going to look like.
  10. I am trying to figure out how to use bbcode to put several images on one line. If I insert several images, they always go on new lines. Anybody know how to fix this? 11. Okay, so I drove down Kirby today and I may have been wrong about what I said regarding the walk from Richmond to the West Ave site. It doesn't seem so bad after all. There are more trees than I remembered and hopefully that will only improve as the area becomes more well trafficked. There are a couple strip center parking lots that you have to walk past but overall it doesn't seem to be a bad walk.
  12. Yeah I'm used to it too but apparently nobody else is. I think they don't understand what you're trying to do and rather than giving you space they get really close behind you and honk until you get into your spot.
  13. It's definitely within walking distance from Richmond. The walk from Richmond to Westheimer up Kirby is 0.56 miles (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=974006). This development is going to stretch down to Kipling which is 0.4 miles from Richmond. 0.4 miles is probably 5-6 minutes walking. The only problem is it isn't really that nice of a walk (it's a walk past a lot of strip centers), so there isn't a lot of shade on the sidewalk. One thing I like about development that goes right up to the sidewalk is that it allows for buildings to install awnings in order to provide some shade to pedestrians.
  14. I wonder if there's a way to write a script that will automatically file his posts away somewhere...?
  15. Isn't there a forum for this type of stuff?
  16. So are there many abandoned buildings or not? Somebody else told me that artists lived in most of the buildings which appear to be abandoned. Does anybody know for sure how many area actually abandoned in that area?
  17. I may be wrong about the abandoned buildings. The two times I've been in that area were for a show at "Warehouse Live" and a walk through what I was told was downtown's "Chinatown" which appeared to be mostly abandoned buildings with the exception of a few small stores. Maybe I was wrong and it only appeared to be mostly abandoned...
  18. Haha I've made that comment as well! (Parking District)
  19. Here is an article from the Chronicle about the possibility of a downtown stadium. Sounds great to me. What's up with these people that commented on the Chronicle article who are so concerned with parking that they are afraid of this idea of new development on the surface lots? Surface lots are ugly wastes of space. Build a garage or something. Build some garages along the metro line so people can take the train to the games. Aren't there tones of abandoned buildings in that area that could potentially serve as sites for a future parking garage? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/4808048.html
  20. Yeah I noticed the mural looked like it was on the inside of the building... so it's an expansion of Brazil?
